Matte Box Filters

Can anybody tell me what the "usual" distance is between a matte box filter, like a 4x4, and the front glass of a lens? I guess the closer the better to eliminate relfections/glare. But is there a tolerable distance? 1/2", 1" or ???

I think the closer to the lens the better.

 

Keep it simple and place the matte box right in front

& as close as possible to the lens

You'll avoid any problems this way.

On mine its less than 1/2 of an inch from element to glass. 4X4.
