Vishal Vittal Posted November 1, 2011 Share Posted November 1, 2011 Hey Guys, I am shooting a Short film this month and would be shooting inside a Bus during Daytime. The scene happens during Morning hours ( around 0830 hrs). There are few scenes where the talent sits close as well as scenes where he is standing while surrounded by a crowd people inside the Bus. What are the ways i can light him and rest of the people in the Bus? Could use natural light entering through the windows to an extent. Would a reflector be sufficient to fill? I am not only looking at tips on Equipment , but also tips on ways to light the scene. Please help. Shooting on a Canon 5D mark II with Canon Lenses. Oli Williams Posted November 2, 2011 Share Posted November 2, 2011 Hey man - here was my solution! We used ND 0.9 all around the bus so we could get an exposure through the window. Kino (daylight bulbs) running off a car inverter for fill (no plugs on bus so had to plug directly onto the bus battery). Then we had a 1 x 1 LED cool light powered by V-lock battery as our 'key' light. ND roll - $149, Kino $75/day, litepanel we got for free but I imagine they are about $100 a day. Cheers, Vishal Just relying on outside light may make you overexpose certain shots. If you have a little budget, then rent 1 or 2 small HMI's 150 watt with batteries to make sure you can have a nice control of the exposure from inside the bus. If you have no budget, then get some bounce cards (both silver and white) and concentrate on controlling medium and CU's of your actors. Hope this helps. But i am worried that the light from an LED panel would be too harsh? @Eric - We wont be able to afford HMIs for this shoot. But we can Kinoflos(Daylight) or Tungsten lamps which are cheaper. Can i use Gels on them for color correction9Wide and CU) and bounce it off the roof for a fill and to balance with the exterior light and maybe use the KinoFlo Lamps for the Talent Please have a look at these pictures taken in the bus just for tests. This was shot when the light was really strong. Do not bounce the lights off the roof of the bus because it's most likely another color other than white. You should bounce it off from a white card. Definitely use gels to balance the color of your lights and those from outside. But keep the inside slightly warmer - more interesting. No problem using Tungsten lights. Yes, they're more hot, use more juice, and you need to color gel them, but they can give you more kicks and more throw in distance. So if you need a wide shot, they might give you just enough power. ND 0.3 is only going to cut down 1 stop, probably not enough to stop the ugly over exposure outside. You only have 4-5 stops of latitude to play with on the 5d before you start losing detail rapidly. LED's are soft lights anyway, if I felt like it needed to be softer I would only put 1 layer of hollywood frost for more diffusion, anything more than that and I would be cutting down light unnecessarily. Remember the suns going to be lower in the morning! Hope you have a great shoot, post the results!!!
