Lighting flicker when shooting high-speed?

Recommended Posts

In a couple of weeks we're giving the new Olympus i-speed 3 cameras a trial run in a 3D mirror rig.

At what speeds does supply flicker start getting noticeable? We're on 50Hz AC. Are there 'safe' speeds?

The studio hasn't the supply outlets for any 10Ks, nor do we have the budget for Unilux lights, so we're thinking of using three 5Ks run off different phases to help smoothe out peaks and troughs. How effective is that?

Cheers!

Hi Karel,

Usually around 72fps you will get flicker with small tungsten units, sodium vapor etc. A good rule is to keep your lights tungsten and 2k or larger. There are charts that show safe speeds with HMIs.

It is always a good idea to makes tests.
