Films for newbs

Hi, I am a complete newb to cinematography, have done some basic photography work and thought it would help me towards gaining knowledge in cinematography. It all started when I watched a film called 'Angst' 1983, serial killer movie (Austrian). I was completely blown away by the techniques they used and it for the first time it made me completely aware of what the camera man was doing. I was wondering if anybody has seen this movie and what they think of it, and also what movies they would recommend where the cinematography is ground breaking to the point where it almost overpowers the film itself. I also watched 'Enter the void' by Gaspar Noe, and thoroughly enjoyed that also.

I'd recommend all of Kubrick's movies and all of Terrance Malick's movies. Also Tarkovsky's films especially Solaris and Stalker. Others that stand out for me are Citizen Kane, American Beauty, Blade Runner, Sunshine, and Children of Men.

 

There are many films with great cinematography but these are films where I feel like the cinematography really makes itself apparent. This is not always a good thing, the job of cinematography is to tell the story and if it distracts from or eclipses the story it is not really successful. However in these cases I think it complimented the story rather than distracting (although in the last two on the list the photography may have outshown the story a bit).

I would look for any films DP'd by Sven Nykvist, Nestor Almendros, László Kovács, Vilmos Zsigmond, Vittorio Storaro, Haskell Wexler, Michael Cimino, Gordon Willis, Rodrigo Prieto and the list goes on. Some of the films mentioned above were shot by some of these great cinematographers.
