cinema theater scene in HUGO

hi everyone,

i am about to shoot a commercial, where the main story takes place in an old movie theater, mainly in close ups.

as i was looking for some good references, i was blown away from the scene in HUGO, where the main characters are sitting for the first time together in the movie theater at the screening of an old black and white mute movie. does an body has any idea, how they achieve this effect? Is this a very powerful digital projector? or moved by hand strong par lamp?

i would appreciate any ideas.
