Stabilization devices

What's out there that some of you have experience with for some of the prosumer DV cameras as well and some of the smaller film cameras such as as Eclair ACL with a small lens and 200 foot mag?I've seen some ads for some that double also as a small jib that fits on a tripod.

 

Also what are some thoughts on the board dolly kits?

Holds camera up to 6lbs. with 2000 Pro or up to 10lbs with 4000 Pro.

With 4000 Pro- run,walk,go up and down stairs,shoot from a moving

vehicle,travel rough terrain without instability or camera shake. I'm

shooting independent film in October(16mm) with Arri S and I am con-

sidering Glidecam. I'm still in preliminary stage,pre-production stage yet.

I'm not sure of camera weight of Arri S and still have to check on that.

Since I produce my own productions, "Film 7 Productions" I might pur-

hase a Glidecam Smooth Shooter if it holds up to its claims. Keep In mind

I'm not saying that there is absolutely no camera shake or instability!!! I

have yet to fully check out the device and I'm going to make a call to Phil-

adelphia for some advice on it, from an industry friend. Also I need to see

how it would operate,and if it would operate with an Arri S. My board would

not give me permission to use steadicam operator in the budget. Of course

there are much cheaper alternatives. I have been a professional photographer

for a long time and I've always carried a big heavy tripod. In fact some of my

student interns would say- "Greg, why do you carry that big,old,heavy tripod".

I'm well aware of claims for products to be stable and free of shake and have

yet to find all of them credible. I'm going to look in to the Glidecam though and

explore its possibilities. Best wishes in your search for what you need. I am a

true John Cassavetes follower, so I have to shoot my first film with an Arri S.

I love the Arri S myself and have one (or access to one anyway).What do use for a video assist?

Hello Marty,

 

The Arri S that I'm going to use has been modified by Du-all Camera. It has

a CCD viewfinder video assist. Camera looks pristine as it has been completely

rebuilt, painted etc. . I'm using Angenieux 12:1, 10-120 mm, T2.0. I have three

400' mags.. The lens has been modified by Cine-Tech. with a new zoom gear,lens

support ring with column,right side focal length markings,camera assistant can

work on right side of the camera,custom-engraved follow focus discs so that focus

witness marks can be read on the right side. Actually one can work on both sides

of the camera. I picked it up on friday and I'll be doing some pre-production test-

ing tues. and wed. this week. The camera does not belong to me it belongs to a

professional photographer(my mentor) and long time friend. I wanted to pay him

rental fees but he absolutely refused. Of course the camera is insured. He's 65 yrs

old Marty and I'm 57 yrs old. This is what he said to me- "Greg you had better do

a good job on your first film or I'm going to kick your ass when you bring the cam-

era back". Can you imagine that Marty? I'm 57 yrs old and this will be my first film.

What the hell was I doing all of my life? I should have laid my copy of AC down and

shot a film. I wish I could have started like David Mullen did, thats a lot to live up

to. I have not ruled out using some primes also,I'll be in N.Y.C. this weekend. Well

the camera can get the job done no doubt,now I've got to prove that I can get the

job done. Hey Marty, what do you think of Arri filters? I've got to get the job done

as I don't want to get my ass kicked!
