  1. Greg, Yeah, her name is Lauren... She was great to work with, even when I hit her in the head with a 4x4 frame of diffusion (sorry Lauren!!) Thanks for the info about the web photos. I would love to get your contact info if you want to help out sometime. Send it to cole@j-four.com Look forward to working with you.
  2. They stopped making 93 in 2004, right? Anyways, I had all the 5293 for sometime and wasn't going to shoot it unless I had too...I sent a test to Deluxe and they said it was border line good/bad...so I called Fotokem with the numbers and they said the same..."it's probably ok, but it could be bad..." We only ended up having to shoot three set-ups with it, so hopefully it turns out ok - if not, we can pick up those shots later. I am a bit nervous as you could imagine.
  3. I got the film at the DR Group for five cents a foot because it was what they had a lot of and wanted to get rid of it, I had only previously gotten at best 9 cents a foot. Plus, they were 220-290ft. loads. But, I am anxious to see the film b/c this is the first Fuji project I've shot. Like I said, I also shot some 5293, so I am excited to compare stocks.
  4. I just shot a short film where we were lucky enough to recieve the Panavision Student Grant. I shot the project using Fuji 8572, and 8582 - a few scenes I had to shoot on 5293 (which is the stock I would have rather shot the film on but I couldn't turn down 5 cents a foot for the Fuji stocks). We shot on the Gold II with a set of their Panavision Primes (sorry don't remember the specifics about them) we had a pretty extensive set, 14mm, 17mm, 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm 75mm, 100mm, 150mm macro and a 10 to 1 zoom 25mm-250mm...I think that's all we had. I stayed almost exclusively on the 24, 35, 50, 75 and 150 for the macro stuff. I wore a 1/4 Black Pro Mist on all of the young girl's close-ups. The first picture is of Violette sitting at the table doing homework. My gaffer, Ephraim Smith and I, hit her from the side with a hard 750w Source Four shooting through a glass door. Her key inside the room can be seen in the next photo. It is a 650w bounced off of a 4x4 foam core with the floppy to keep it off the walls. The walls proved to be very challanging. The wall paper that was applied for the show ended up having several wrinkles throughout so we had to keep it off of the walls to hide them. This ended up taking more time to light and limiting our creativity - another instance that re-iterated the importance of great production design. The dinner scene was lit with a 1000w Jem Ball light draped with duvatine to keep it off the walls. Violette's backlight was a small mini mole with some opal and dimmed down around 50 percent. We had a T.V. light gag which I used a 650w Arri tungsten unit with 1/2 CTB and dimmed up so that the max was 1 stop over and min. was 3 stop under. It was great having such a nice camera. A big thanks to Ric at Panavision for helping us out. We had a technical issue with the first body we were using so I took it back to Panavision and they gave us another body for another week of production - no questions asked. I have been very impressed with their professionalism and willingness to help our project be a success. This was the last film I shot as a undergraduate at Brigham Young University. It was a pretty great film school, I was lucky enough to shoot a lot of film. In all I ended up shooting 8 short films,4 spec ads, and 4 music videos. Five of those projects were on S16mm, four projects on 35mm, and five on HD. I am headed to Germany on Sunday, May 13 to shoot a doc for a week on the HVX with the M2 adapter. Should be a lot of fun. I will post more about that trip. P.S. If anybody can tell me how to get the darn file size down to a minimum w/out making the picture look awful I woul appreciate it. These files were originaly 2.4 MB so I had to resize them and down res them to approx. 20 KB each and now they look awful. I have noticed others have posted photos that look great and I am wondering how you keep them looking so great with such little information. Thanks.
  5. Satsuki, Your right, sorry I meant the Gold II!! Anyways, it'll be fun. Ken, yeah, we had enough light...we were getting an 8/11 at the center of the ring when we were shooting at 170 degrees and at 24 FPS...so, by the time we compensated for the shutter angle and the high frame rate, we were still doing ok. We did telecine last week and the director has done a rough cut of the boxing footage...we have yet to shoot the rest of the spot...that happens next wednesday. I'll try and get a cut to put it on the web. I'll let you know!
  6. Sorry it took so long to get back to your post!!! I have been really busy lately! Satsuki, thanks for the comments and question. Sorry I don't have more specifics on the lenses. I can't recall what type of Canon Primes they are (I should know but I've forgotten...we used our film schools stuff...BYU). They were pretty fast mostly either a T 1.4 or a T 2...the smoke wasn't to hard to contain within the space...we would smoke it up right before we shot in the corner we wanted it at and then let it settle a bit before we shot. And, yes...the camera was free that's why we used it. Matthew, also, appreciate the comment and question...now you know why we used such an old camera:) The director has a rough cut, hopefully I can post it soon. Good news, I just got a Panavision grant to shoot another thesis film...I guess we are getting the Gold Platinum, that will be nice!
  7. Just wrapped on the first day of shooting a wii spec ad. We had a 20'x20' ring to light. I hung (4) 6k Space lights with a silk base mounted half way up the black skirts...we left them on the whole time about 8 feet above the heads of the boxers. I used (3) Source Four 750w's for the three corner backlights....thats about it...we used some showcard for fill and eyelights, etc. I shot on 5279 with an old Mitchell Mark II camera. The hand-held set up was created by a grip team that works at the studio...they were kind enough to let us use it. It worked great but that old beast weighed close to 85 lbs. when it was all dressed up. We used a set of Canon primes...I shot most of it on a 35mm and 55mm...some at 45 degree shutter and two shots at 120FPS Fun shoot, lots of good stuff. check out the pics... http://www.colewebley.blogspot.com/
  8. I was researching the how the HVX does it and someone sent me this thread, it explains how to do it...enjoy. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=5...p;postcount=154
  9. Maybe I should start a new thread for this but I am wondering if anyone knows how to get the CineAlta to shoot at 6fps? I know there are ways to do this on the HVX-200 (saving scene files on the SD card) but does anyone know how to get this done on the CineAlta? thanks!
  10. (5) 400' mags right? any other accesories? mattebox, support? That's a PL mount right? It can be modified for Super 35mm right? Thanks!!
  11. John, continue to be strong. I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts.
  12. Greg. I like the music and there are a lot of great things in your reel. There are some shots which I don't think help your reel...they are alright in and of themselves but I don't think they showcase your talent as much as some of the others...and of course you only want the "best of the best" I love the music though, its pretty catchy for all your epic stuff and the paintball stuff which looks great. Good luck, I hope this helps. Well done. Shots to re-evaluate: *2 shot in the reel of the guy on the sidewalk *The wide shot of the old car...I know you need something like this to introduce the interior stuff but that shot is pretty flat...maybe use another spot in the shot where the light is coming through the trees more??? *I think the whole sequence of the dude walking down the alley and looking at the picture can go...doesn't do much for the body of work *The shot of the boy with the stick gun...nice editing with the previous shot...but this shot is pretty flat and doesn't do anything... *The two-shot of the hooded guys near the end which is followed by the single of the guy on the right...nice rim lit but...well, I don't think they help it...they guy with the beard probably did a great job acting but his single isn't that flattering, (not necessarly your camera work or lighting) and you need images that are nice to the eyes... These are the ones that stuck out to me. I hope that helps! Best of luck on your ventures--hope you get the feature! Let us know if you have another cut.
  13. Great. Thanks everyone...it seems that I should cut the hairdresser turing to look at the camera for sure. Thanks again. www.j-four.com/videos/Cole.mov
  14. I found out a way to post them...here is my blog. I have posted them there. Enjoy. There is another shoot on the site as well...a music video I shot a month ago in Milwaukee. The band is Maritime -- they used to be the Promise Ring back in the day. Pretty cool video, we shot on a Bolex with a 400' foot mag on 7218. I used the flourescents that were there at the local, I just put some skirts around them to keep the fall-off away from the walls. I had 3 arri 1ks, one with a chimera, and a couple of small lowell open face lights (i think they were 500w) I hope this is ok. Sorry I couldn't get them to load on the page...8k is really small and you can't upload anything larger--or maybe you can--I'm not that good on computers. http://colewebley.blogspot.com/
  15. Sorry...I just got my computer and I don't have Photoshop...the pictures are all TIF files and very big...I don't know how to compress them into smaller photos...I will try and get Photoshop, unless someone has an idea...thanks for the patience.
  16. Shot this a couple of weeks ago...35mm shot on the old Mitchell Mark II camera with a set of Canon Primes and an Angenieux Zoom lens. Stock was 5218. Spot lights were done with (2) 750w Source Four Ellipsoidals on full spot Stage was keyed by (2) 2k Mole Richardsons Back lights on stage were (2) 1k Colortran open face lights Stage was at a 5.6 I rated the film at 500 and exposed at 2.8/4 split If you have any questions let me know! I can't get the pictures to work...will try again later...the files are too big
  17. Thanks Matt, Next week I will have the camera for some tests and I will try both...shooting at 60i and also the higher shutter speed....what about a combination of both? I know I would have to have quite a bit more light but what kind of results do you think I would get if i shot a really higher shutter speed at 60i? First time user of this camera... Thanks
  18. Thanks alot Micheal. I will be shooting tests next week...perhaps I can post them. Best of luck.
  19. Thanks Greg. Yeah, more then one person has told me that. I appreciate it! For everyone else, I was able to get it on my site so here is the new better compressed URL: www.j-four.com/videos/Cole.mov Enjoy.
  20. Does anyone know how to do speed ramping in camera with the F900 or what equipment I would need to rent to do it? I am just learning this camera and the director wants to do some ramping...is it even possible in camera with this guy or should we shoot those shots on film and/or shoot the HD highspeed and then do it in post? Help! Thanks
  21. Hey, shot this spec ad several months ago...director and I (I also co-directed) are still working on the cut. Take a look let me know what you like/dislike in composition, movement, lighting, etc. The spot is going to be used internally in the company so it may not make a lot of sense to the normal viewer... Format: 35mm Camera: Mitchell Mark II Lenses: Canon Primes Stock: 5218 http://www.j-four.com/videos/Backward.mov
