  1. 'the photographers guide to light' by nigel hicks is one of my favorites,also all of the ansel adams books even though they are a bit outdated still full of great information. the camera,negative,print ansel adams books were the first i read about photography and they are important if you care to shoot and develope your own b&w and learn about the zone system other than that kinda useless.

  2. yeah like they said...cleaning marks usually wont affect a photo but just to be absolutely sure stop down to f16 and f22 and check your negatives with a loupe...really examine them (youll have to because even if it does affect the picture it wont be enough to even notice) shooting wide open wont do much....marks usually show up best stopped down.

  3. someone in a chat was going on and on the other day about how film will be gone in 15 years.im constantly running into people trying to justify digital cameras,i love them but they are WAY out of my price range right now.i shoot 120 in 645 format.who says digital is easier?i bought a d70 two years ago,had to learn quick about ICC profiles for printers,color spaces,extensive editing i couldnt even come CLOSE to some of my favorite film stocks,provia 100f,e100vs and velvia,you have to be border line brilliant to get decent results with digital in my opinion.easy to me is knowing what film stocks will do what and loading it and shooting,i sold my d70 a few months ago because it was a cheap plastic paper weight that cost twice as much as my 645.i hope more and more photographers do go digital though because it makes my portfolio look amazing :P

  4. ok is anyone aware that there have only been 17 recorded deaths from stingrays in history,this was a freak accident...steve irwin was a respectable guy and an animal lover and expert...he was not a timothy treadwell ignorant pseudo expert.i really dont care if he had it coming or brought it on himself.there are children who dont have a father now and that is sad...ive heard people laughing and mocking him and i think that is sick,one of these days one of you gaffers or electricians are gonna get a fatal volt of electricity and people might say 'well he was working with dangerous amounts of voltage he had it coming' expert or not accidents happen and when anyone dies it is tragic and sad.

  5. I just shot the flashbacks for an episode of "Cold Case" cross-process push 3. I had to have the push because the murder was shot on a bridge 30 meters above the river and about 200 meters from either riverbank. This situation calls for alot of light even pushing three. I think that i had 18 12k pars, 2 18ks and a 6k working the whole time. I found that the stock doesn't handle overexposure at all, 1/2 stop over yeilds no detail in the highlights, 1 stop under you can barely see detail. Too your eye the lighting looks flat and boring, but the chemistry gives you contrast that is suprising. The color shofts to green in the skintones(this can be taken out in camera with a magenta 30cc filter or in telecine. The contrast bleeds in the transition between black and white (hot window and black haired actress). I love it. There is no way that this look could be achieved in post without a tremendous amout of work. As it is my dailies transfer guy worked very hard to get it to this point. Let me know what you think.

  6. ive heard alot of films use cross processing,can anyone tell me what films specifically have used this technique and wether it was c-41 in e6 chemistry or e6 in c-41.also i heard when you plan to cross process your film you should rate it a bit slower and overexpose it,how much overexposure gives good results as i know from still photography overexposure + cross processing can cause very high contrast and unpredictable results.

    I know that on this forum there is some people that are users of Digital Photography.

     

    I'm actually thinking about getting one of these wonderful tool.

    I'm a Minolta user as a Film's user by the way.

     

    I'm wondering wich gear you would advice : Nikkon D70S or Canon 350D ?

    d70 no question...i have no canon/nikon bias and if someone does they are an idiot.both are practically the same as far as image quality,canon boasts more megapixels but there is no visible difference between 6 and 8 mp camera's up to 11x14 even.i like the d70 because it seems like a more capable camera,controls are all accessed by one dial instead of menu's (as seen on professional slr's)and also the d70 (and the d50 even) have 1/500 flash synch which is extremely high for a 'consumer' slr (the $4,000 d2x has 1/250) and if youve ever shot in harsh light with fill flash synch speed is important.alot of working 'pro's' i know skip the $4,000 d2x and use d70's and put they're money into good glass...anyway....d70 all the way in my opinion i love mine

  8. http://www.photo.net/photodb/member-photos...378&include=all i came across this guys portfolio last night.it has to be one of the best and most interesting ive seen in a long time....is it me or do his stills have a real cinema feel to them....they look like movie stills.this is the kind of still photography i have been trying to do for years.anyone know how he gets this look? real basic setup...dslr and 50mm 1.4....the contrast and color have to be done in post.curious if anyone can speculate on how he achieves this look from a dslr.thanks

    but you're asking folks to tell you how to light a scene...?

    If you're going to filmschool is because you want to learn...

    How will you ever manage to learn if you don't try to do it on your own.

     

    If you just want others to tell you how many lights, which ones, and where to set them up...

    Maybe you should drop out of film school and stop calling yourself a DP--

    You can call yourself a electric and you'll find many folks willing to tell you where to place a light.

    A DP's job is to make decisions on where the light will be place and what it will do.

     

    Take some iniative--if you want any hopes of succeeding in this career.

    this is not my buisiness but im known to ass into things once in awhile.your comment is very rude,someone who may not have as advanced knowledge as you asked a humble question and you more or less make fun of him.when i was studying photography i had asked mentors how to light or how they would light something and i would use their techniques and figure out different creative ways i could do it myself based on their advice...i wouldnt expect any student/inexperienced photographer to light something brilliantly like someone with 30 years experience would.Everyone imitates as they learn and hopefully grow and develope their own understanding and style.Are forums a place to get advice and learn or to brag and make fun of people who know less than you?

  10. people say its not stealing because its free to copy (instead of stealing an actual dvd and packaging from a store)...thats an easy cop out.Everyone knows that it is intellectual property.im sure everyone at this board knows the kinda hard work that goes into a film and how much money they invest.movies are not a right they are a luxery.intellectual property is still theft.

  11. alright so im shooting a girl friend of mine downtown at night,just messing around she finds a glass window with all these jars with random things in it,she loves it and wants me to photograph her with it,i am an alright photographer but this posed a very challenging lighting scenerio (to me anyway)...dark night,very well light background and subject in front of it,i didnt want to fire the flash from the camera because i knew the reflection on the glass would be hideous and obvious so the closest and best idea that came to me was to put my sb600 flash directly below and in front of her and fire it wirelessly,this obviously created nasty shadows,esspecially her glasses as you can see in the attatchment,anyway,sadly this is the closest i came to the shot,wondering what anyone else wouldve done in this situation with limited gear,i was using a digital slr with one sb600 speedlight.thanks

  13. Oh ya, you didn't hear about this model. This is the one that doesn't require a cameraman. In fact if you tell it what you want, it will tell you how to make your movie for you and it's programmed to show up an hour and a half past call, misses the best take and immediately demands golden time one minute after working twelve hours so it still FEELS like there's a cameraman there.

     

     

    haha thats great capt...i swear i see some whacky stuff on ebay...everyone does everyday but that is just OUTRAGEOUS.i mean i wonder what he paid for it?
