  1. ja, here in South Africa the sun can be quite intense so we easily end up with very high f stops. for example the F5 has a ISO setting of 2000....so at times you need to stop down sth. like 10stops in order to get anywhere close to f2.0. Hence using for example a NDIR 1.8 AND a NDIR 1.2
  2. Hi there, I was wondering if it's really neccessary to do a frameleader when shooting with digital video cameras ? I don't see why I would do a frameleader....but if you do, what is the easiest&quickest way? Since one cant's shine a light throught the eyepiece...do I simply draw the framelines off the onboard monitor on a piece of paper or what? Thanks, M
  3. Hi everyone, a DIT told me one shouldn't use more than one ND IR at the same time and rather use straight NDs in combination with one NDIR in order to get your stop compensated. But I was wondering why? Color shift? And why actually ND IR only from 1.2 an up ? It is not like there isnt' infrared light out there if I use a ND9... Thanks for your input, M
  4. hi there, we are planing a talk show in a studio with 3 cameras in total and due to a rather limited budget can't afford broadcast cameras. I was looking for good and inexpensive alternatives and am considering the canon xf105 (50Mb/s, 1920x1080, 4:2:2, XLR IN, Genlock...). to me this seems a realy decent compromise - what are you thoughts and comments? are there other cameras to consider keeping in mind that the budget for the cameras is around $13.000...Sony EX1/3, JVC GY HM790, Panasonic AG HPX250 are too expensive, Canon XH G1 does only 4:2:2 at 25Mb/s....... is there anyone who has already shot with a xf105 in a studio/talkshow and/or multiple camera set-up and who could share his/her experience? regards, m
  5. Hey Michael, sorry.I'm lost in translation...what are witness marks and what is "J-Lar" ? I planed on just taping the rings with white gaffer tape and use a non-permanent marker to mark the ring.......
  6. okay, thanks for the info! now I just need to find out if the rental has the metric rings....doubt it though. we'll see! thanx
  7. Hi everyone, I was wondering if one can change the Preston FI+Z to meters or rather if there are pre-printed focus rings in meters? I got lenses marked with feet but I am pulling in meters so I would like to make use of the "lens mapping" software but if there are no pre-printed focus rings in meters I am lost. Any idea how to solve this except making my own rings in meters?
  8. great answers! now it all makes sense again. thanks to all of you!
  9. I was wondering why excactly one has to recenter the lens port when changing from normal35 to super35 or the other way round? And what would it look like if I recenter the lens port for super 35 but use a normal 35 groundglass? Or shooting normal35 and using a super35 groundglass.....? And what is the reason for changing the bridge plate again? Thanks for some input!
  10. bluescreen coz the puppets are partly green, excactly the color of a greenscreen... m
  11. hi everybody, i will be doing a bluescreen scenario using the 7D...! it's gonna be sort of a table top set up: handpuppets on a table. the puppets are about 80cm tall, the table about 2m wide and 1m in depth, i want to light the bluscreen with kinoflos and bluetubes, the keylight will be a Panaura or octadome hanging from the ceiling with some blackout around it to prevent spilling light onto the bluescreen. same goes for the kinoflos: blackout to prevent spilling. 2 rifa exlite 500W as a fill... NOW what would be a safe distance for the table in order to prevend the puppents from creating shadow on the bluescreen. i have about 1,3m....enough? otherwise the fill lights just have to come from a pretty high angle...the keylight wont cause any trouble.. anything else to consider? cheers
  12. hi there, is there such a thing like specific bluescreen tubes for kinoflos? was browsing on a rentals homepage and came across "bluescreen/greenscreen tubes" for kinoflo... how do they differ from regular tubes ? do they come as daylight and tungsten? why would i not use regular tubes to light my bluescreen? any input? thanks!
  13. okay. so the par is much stronger than a compact, right? is there any rule of thumb that a par is x times stronger than a par?
  14. hi everybody, could someone please explain me trhe difference between a compact and a par ? thanks!
  15. is there a difference between a hot mirror and a IR filter? if so when would i use a IR and a hot mirror ? is it not both to protect the chip from infrared light ? as far as i know there are combined IR ND filters but only straight hot mirrors - any reason for why there is no ND hot mirror ?
  16. okay, so the newspaper test is just like the harp-test we do this side (cape town). just a different name. FDC makes sense - i am familiar with the depth gauge so the FDC is teh "digital" version. got it. thanks!
  17. diagonal newspaper test? not familiar with that...what is that about? like the "harp-test" to check the groundglass is in correct position?
  18. okay, that's what i had in mind...another 1.AC confused me when he was talking about the ALEXA's back focus...busines as usual! thanks!
  19. okay, that's what i had in mind...some 1AC confused me when saying he checks the back focus during gearcheck....so it's the rental house's responsibility in a way.....thanks!
  20. hi there, this probably seems like a silly question but since i'm new tto the ALEXA i was wondering how one checks the back focus? can anyone advise me please? thanks!

  22. hi guys, i've never worked with panavision cameras but i would like to get to know these cameras. they are just not popular in germany so it's a bit tricky to get info about them. so i was wondering if there is any info available out there in the internet like a user's guide or anything like that. dont neccessarily wanna buy a book for big bucks if i dont have to.. maybe someone can tell me a few basic things about the cameras, the lenses and accessories etc.. are they easier to handle compared to arri cameras? anything in particular to be aware of? what do you like better? arri or panavision? and why? any kind of info would be helpful !! :-) thanx, m
  23. hi there, I#ve heared different theories so far about sr3 high speed mags on a "normal" sr3 and vice versa... so is it possible to use the high speed mags an the normal sr3 and vice versa or only high speed mags on the normal sr3 and normal mags on the high speed sr3 up to 75fps?
