  1. So the short story is that my cat had an accident in the corner of my apartment, I cleaned it up, then sat my boom pole end-down in it a few months later. Now there's green crusty stuff all over the cable connector. Is it hosed?

Stop laughing at me.

  2. I'm thinking about filming all exterior/interior buildings and streets in Seattle and then going to L.A. and working with actors on my no-budget epic. You may ask why not film entirely in L.A.? Because L.A. is hell and is a desert. Seattle is lush and green but all the people there are into everything but my film.

It's going to be into the mid 90s today here in Seattle. We're dying, I tells ya!

I understand what you mean about the lack of actors/actresses here. Casting my upcoming shoot has been an exercise in patience. Good luck to ya.

  3. IMO good cinematography is classified when you dont notice the angles lighting etc. What we do is an invisible craft, that only few can really appreciate.

That's the gist of moviemaking. When the art is so good that it disappears, you've done it right. ;)

  4. Sometimes you wonder how smart you really are... well, I do anyway. I set out with the best intentions. I wanted to make something GLORIOUS for my thesis. I approach every film I make with the attitude that I may never make another film ever again. Thus I can put all of my creativity toward whatever project I'm working on.

With that in mind, I decided to write a 20 page Western. Complete with horses, guns, blood and masks (that's probably pretty weird but it makes sense in the script... I hope). Yay for me... I made something that could be considered... "expensive"... maybe even "unreasonable". But, hey... who ever got anywhere by being reasonable... don't answer that, my fragile little psyche can barely handle the stress of this thing right now.

The one thing I've learned from watching Peter Jackson and George Lucas is that, unless a project is "impossible", you probably shouldn't waste your time with it. ;)

    Good luck, Nick.

  5. Then again, 50 watts goes a long way in the dark. I hope you are remembering to over expose to reduce digital noise. I've never used the xl 2 in the dark, but you always need to shoot some serious test footage before you jump into anything.

Yep. Our last project was shot in a decommissioned warship, so we're used to "dim". ;)

Nate (Donnelly, also registered here) is supposed to capture some more tests tonight. If you guys would like to see how well the LEDs work, I'll have him upload an .mp4 or something.

  6. Hey everybody. My brother and I are about to dive into a low-light short film shoot at an old underground fort out here in the NW using our trusty XL-2. It's a ghost story, and the main light source during most of the film is going to be the protagonist's flashlight. We've never had to deal with a totally dark location before (scary!) so we've been experimenting with low-watt fill ideas. We're pleasantly suprised at how well a few of our white consumer LED lights are holding up. Given some soft diffusion and good camera settings, we're getting some decent test video.

So anyway, are there any professional solutions worth looking at for someone that still wants to be able to pay his actors? I noticed that B&H has some pricey LED lights, but if there's anything else out there that will do the trick, I'd like to know about it.

    Thanks!
