    Digital Sensor Rating

Hello But the methodology of rating one's digital camera for a particular ASA doesnt seem logical to me. Film has a gamma of 0.6, its midpoint is 18% gray, has a far greater dynamic range. Digital has a gamma... linear or variable if I'm right, and the rating of digital cameras on technical manual (f/8 @2000 lux for 90%white) seems alien to me. Why then do we use a gray card and correspond it with around 45-55 IRE rating for around mid gray and then rate our sensor accordingly, when we shld be using a white card with a corresponding IRE rating and sensor rating... Help... I need somebody Help
  2. Hello Could you kindly tell me where and when was the seminar conducted? Are there any such seminars in the future? I too am a cinematography student and am pleasantly surprised to learn that Digital Cinematography has finally hit the shores of India. Ashim

    Digital Sensor Rating

This is one facet of digital camera thats eluding my understanding for quite some while now. What I'd want to know is the way digital cameras are rated and why? For eg: f/8@2000lux for 90% white?? Does this mean that digital cameras are calibrated for white just like films are calibrated for 18% gray. I know I am getting it quite muddled up,but if the above is true then why 90% white?? Also how is it possible to use your lightmeter for digital shoots(except for measuring the units of light). Light meters are basically for film use. If I expose my window according to the light meter readings at f/8 but I want my window to be 1 stop brighter, I will expose at f/5.6. But how do I apply the same logic with digital shoots. A kind appeal to all the members of our Brotherhood to Enlighten me on the above. Thank You

    Log Output

I'd like to know what does it mean to say that the Viper Filmsteream camera delivers an RGB 4:4:4 10 bit LOG output uncompromised by electronic camera processing. The query is directed toward the Log output, how does it affect the quality of the images compared to Linear mode?
  5. In the Post, where a commonly used file format for film scans, the Cineon or DPX format, uses 10 bits per channel, which equals 1024 levels, and linearly encodes the densities of the negative above base. Now I fail to understand the latter part of the above statement ( and Linearly encodes the densities...). I'd also like to know what does it mean to say that the Viper Filmsteream camera delivers an RGB 4:4:4 10 bit LOG output uncompromised by electronic camera processing. Again the query is directed toward the Log output. I underastand that film is a Log-Log medium(Log exposure vs. log density). But what aout the digital cameras. they seem to be operating in both. What is exposing for Log vs. Linear??
  6. Could anyone kindly give me a detailed explanation on the differences between Log Exposure vs. Linear Exposure and the way it affects Image processing. Any help shall be valued.
