  1. Im a DIT in the BIG commercial biz, so i can only speak of digital format... but RED ones have been replaced by EPIC on most of the larger budget shoots.

I still do Alexa but it went from 50/50 (red one/alexa) to 70/30 (epic/alexa)

F35? damn... 5 years ago called.. they want their boat anchor back..

  2. Which kowas do you have, the 'cine prominar' ?

And which lenses are sharper ?

The kowas seem to be less 'dramatic' than the super baltars, aren't they ?

I have a full set of CINE PROMINAR

    20, 32, 40, 50, 75, 100 (on the lookout for a 25)

These lenses are less dramatic and less retro looking (in image quality) than the super baltars.

I have found the kowas to be sharper than the baltars as well

I love these lenses, but would be more hesitant to use them on commercial work... They work amazing for narrative shorts/features.

On digital sensors like the RED (which I have) I prefer older glass such as the kowa's or panchros, not the tack sharp "medical" looking modern lenses.

I got real lucky with these lenses. bought them spur of the moment when i saw they were for sale. without doing any research (ballsy move), but I fell in love with them.

  3. Originally my plan was/is to key from a "moon light" source, which would be coming from the large french doors (with blinds or satin).

I was going to bounce a 1200 or 2.5k off ultra bounce, and let that flood into the door windows. Inside the room I may or may not have nightstand lamps on (I would dim them down as to not throw too much light from them) (reason is because later on in the scene I will have the room door open, and I need nice tungsten light from the hall to spill in and light up the actors over key.

    PROBLEM:

This shot is scheduled during the day!

So my only options are to scrap the larger light/ultra bounce Idea, Black out the windows, and cheat the key from inside the room with a joker 200/400..

Or build a box around the windows/doors and still light from outside the doors.

Does anyone have opinions or what you would do?

  4. Hard when comparing a camera that takes B4 HD lenses versus 35mm cine lenses, though certainly a Zeiss DigiPrime and a Zeiss Master Prime or Ultra Prime are all closer to each other than a Zeiss Super Speed. But there are limits in matching parameters.

exactly. thats what I mean.. i shouldnt have said SAME.. but equivalent

  5. Zakaree, I haven't posted in a while... but let me ask you one question... are you not a mod on reduser.net...

And basically I'm on the fence with the camera... but like any camera... I want to know the warts as well as the pretty stuff...

I am not a mod anymore. i never edited words out of peoples mouths either when i was...

and also i agree with you. there is no problem learning about the good and the bad, however... just as long as people understand that the bad is a temp thing. the camera will always be under construction, which is awesome

  6. To be honest I didn't find this test very useful. For instance I would have put a Master Prime on the Red, so that the lens quality on both the Red and the F23 would have been the same, thereby taking the lens out of the equation. I'm sure other people can chime in about the post route (especially the scaling) that was applied to the images.

agreed. if your going to test.. have the same parameters

  7. god, i havent posted here in a long time.. but i feel compelled...

ever since before the release of the camera, certain people .... have been bashing it and trying to discredit. I find these post enjoyable in a sick and twisted way, because those words simply do nothing!! The camera is out.. its proven.. and its working on sets that you unfortunatly are not.

The guys who feel threatened by this equipment are just hurting themselves. Are you afraid that gear is going to ruin your career? in the long run, you will be outdated and will either have to give up or give in.

Im starting to think most of the hate posts are made by certain competitors who should really feel threatend..

    anyways...

  8. Hi Jan,

Zakaree from the Red team would seem to be confident that the first cameras will ship August 31st.

    http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...st&p=188997

    Stephen

Please don?t quote me on any definitive information. I was just stating the schedule that was released and Jim had said we are still on schedule unless unforeseen events take place

"We are currently planning to ship the 1st 50 cameras by the end of the month. Things can slip, maybe the next 100 will slip... we don't know. But we aren't planning on that happening. A lot depends on how these 1st 50 cameras act when we fire them up. :-)

    Jim"

We have been working really hard these last few weeks:)

But I do know this for definitive!!! RED ONE WILL KICK ASS

  9. "However, one shouldn´t be surprised if that schedule slips a few weeks or even months. "

    Or even years.

I wasn't planning on being surprised actually.

Does anybody else here think there's something about this whole deal that doesn't smell right?

Here we are, two weeks away from the first delivery deadline, and there's hardly a peep from RED.com about how this is going.

Meanwhile the LART tests have been mysteriously postponed for no adequately explained reason. (Yes they gave a reason, I don't think it's adequate:-) Meanwhile, they've been passing the hat around to raise money to the food they expect to consume. I mean for f*ck's sake; you'd think Jannard would spring for a bit of food after all the slobbering support those pathetic prats have given him! Meanwhile, discussion of the subject of delivery seems to have mysteriously evaporated on reduser.net. All they seem to do now is misquote and generally bash this forum for having the temerity to point out that most of the reduser regulars wouldn't know a sprocket hole from their arsehole.

I wish I knew the answer.

But I'm not going to get it from anyone here, just a lot of unfounded speculation from a lot of mysterious posters.

The whole thing is just ... weird.

Oh well, what's another two weeks....

With or without respect (I'm not sure)

    Carl

First off, We are shipping the first batch august 31st.

We are completely swamped here and really dont have alot of time to be all over the web announcing our daily doings.

Have you read what "LART" is?

Its a PRIVATE test of our camera being done by some of the first redservation holders.. It is in no way affiliated by RED other than the fact that they have purchased our cameras and will be doing private field testing.

Just wanted to clear those things up.. Otherwise.. sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Next couple weeks will be very exciting:)

  10. Richard,

Only $2,000,000 in deposits, small change relative to the $1,300,000,000 (less tax) Jim will get from the sale of his Oakley shares.

    Stephen

hes not selling HIS shares.. he is selling the remainder shares of the company.

  11. everyone is missing the point.. REDs goal is not to MAKE MONEY!.. Jims a billionaire.

He wants to make the big companies realize they can not dominate the film industry anymore. He wants film making to be available to the more talented yet dirt poor artists.

Who else is sick of seeing big budget big hype studio flops? I know Jim is!!

  12. Unfortunately, If your branded a Jerk or whatever.. your not gunna get picked up by too many people.. Sure you might do indi films out in timbucktoo but when it comes down to it..The real world is onboard and knows whats up.. once they see names and put things together you will be banned from not just a silly forum.. but from the professional industry.

    Thats my 2 cents

  13. shot my own movies with neighbor friends around 8.. used GI- JOES for a makeshift animation video.. got into music around 14 and didnt do much with video anymore.. wento go community college.. needed a extra credit class so i picked film 1... got hooked again.. went to film school (wasted money) and ever since i have been doing cinematography. 24 years old now

    RIGHT handed

  14. This is your first post, you're not from DVX are you?

Contrary to what JarRED stated here, there is very much an "us vs them" mentality on the DVX site. I should copy a lot of what they say about cinematography.com. But that would be seriously fanning the flames.

JarRED also banned another cinematography.com member from DVX for not praising RED to his liking.

No one over there is allowed to voice any dissent at all when it comes to RED.

    R,

yah im from dvx.. but so what? im bashing the non believers.. the people who have no faith in JIM and RED. the camera will be the best thing ever. i cant wait. i think its funny when all these people try to claim its not possible because blah blah blah. I dont care if THEY cant make it work.. all that matters is that RED CAN make it work and they will

    PS. i love modern marvels!

    saw ur imdb
