  1. I gotta agree with Walter here. I'm an HVX owner, and I love my HVX but I've seen footage that I though was great from the JVC/Canon XHA (hell the HV20 also), and would have never guessed it was footage from any of the three. Really and truly I didn't even care. I would have bought the JVC but at the time of consideration it had something going on with the image intermittently (like half of the screen was gone...someone correct me its been awhile). Then thow on one of the several lens adapters and the picture is really mucked up so to speak. I love the P2 workflow, but would'nt mind tape. But after color correction and such I think they look comparable and complimentary. And no one but us geeks in these forums give a rat's ass anywho.

  2. They are no professional because they are not designed and manufactured to what I would consider professional standards. They are just a step above home-brew hobby devices. A professional piece of equipment is something that is precisely made and can be relied upon in paid working situations.

I can see your point but I think there are a few that are actually manufactured. As a whole I think 35mm adapters will become obsolete with the advent of red, and where I think Canon and some of the other big boy's might go with their CMOS based cameras so that eventually the money invested in any of them 35mm adapters will be comparable to a camera with interchangeable lenses anyway. I have however seen quite a few music vid's airing on MTV and the like that were shot with the M2, and had I not known I would've never guessed.

  3. I guess Jim's mistake was announcing the camera in the first place. I have'nt been to the Red site in awhile because I want to see some footy, but then again Sodenberg's movie will be out and then I can really see some footage. But those of you who are professional DP's with gripes I just don't get it. Is it that you were not consulted or hired to the team? I mean i'm trying to understand because the fan boy posts are f'n ridiculous and the anti fan boy posts likewise. This camera won't replace David Mullen any more than the advent of 24p on prosumer cameras. I personally can't see what some you guys will pull off with your usual magical skill and this camera that can be under 25k for a functional package. I come to this site for information and inspiration but these threads are f'n ridiculous! I mean really can this camera be a bad thing? Nothing will compensate for a cinematographers ability to light a scene...nothing. That's what brought me to this site, I have an HVX-200 that can be noisy as hell, especially with user error i.e. improper exposure etc, etc. Phil chill...Max relax...David keep being the cool MF we know and love. Its just another camera, but I have to admit its been nice to know it was coming and actually arrived not just vaporware and in less than a year and half.

  4. That footy looks nice. I'm not buying a Red. I haven't earned it, didn't earn my HVX either so when I become a better shooter Red will be there and i'll have cash for Red. I can't wait to see what people with a budget can do with the camera.

  5. I won't speak for the M2 and other such devices as I do not consider them professional pieces of kit.

Ouch! harsh. Any reason you don't consider them professional Mitch? And please do not take this as a challenge, i've been in your store ;)

  6. That kind of sounds like the covered wagon...I can't remeber who wrote about a fixture like that, maybe on of the gods David Mullen or perhaps Claudio. Sounds doable I also recal a similiar fixture made from foam core on one of those VASST training videos, he even used dimmable fluorescents. I believe they were six light fixtures....you could even daisy chain them in a large china ball.

  7. This is an excellent thread with great posts. There are links, photos, personal experiences.

" HF ballasts are easy - some are even dimmable, but they are very expensive and suffer

exactly the same problems as dimmable kinos."

One question I have is what are the problems with dimmable floursecents? Thanks.

I would think the only real problem would be with color temperature...

  8. Nice links greg, have you used the savage lights? should I expect a similar light as from the kino flo? (I use that just because it's something I know.) Also what would the light quality difference between your link and http://www.shopwise2000.com/index.asp?Page...&ProdID=113 be ?

I notice the fotodiox has the same light types - I'm assuming they'd be the same quality of light?

    thanks.

Hey Mark, i've never used Kino FLo's but I used the Savage's on a shoot and thought they were excellent. People on other forums have said the output is comparable to the Kino's...the thing you loose is the light weight portability of the Kinos. The one I linked to is very portable and light to me, so I can only imagine the convenience of a Kino Flo. I've never read of anyone using those fixtures you linked too, but they seem to be growing in popularity with the photography community and manufactures. Westcott makes one which is almost 3x the cost of that one. I wish I could see one in person.

  9. The 800w reference is supposed to be the size tungsten light punching through a CTB gel to equal their light. I agree that it isn't particularly clear.

Refresh me Mitch but how many stops would be loss going thru full CTB gel? 800w effectively becomes...?

  10. i was ready to buy one of their fastbox kits until i realized that the "800" is only a 140, with the "equivalent output of 800w tungsten". i'd rather use kinos in that case, though at the great price i might still get one for car and mobile work since it would run great off a small inverter. i spend so much money renting small basic lights like rifas and kinos that i should really buy one or two.

    /matt

Same boat. I've read other comments on different sites in regards to the 800w estimate being generous. I understand that a HMI is 4x the tungsten equivalent. That would make this lite 6x the tungsten equivalent. The thing I like about it is its compact and would do well on a small 2k genny if you had a couple, even with the larger one. I'll let you know.

  11. i have 3 red-head 800 watt , but i need the HMI !

i am sure there is a trick ; Alchimie :)

the secret is the" lamp" inside ? i mean , if i arrange to have the HMI lamp in the red-head . could somthing like that works ?

No. HMI's require a ballast so your choices are Alzo, Kino (or the like), or the real deal.

  12. You can do a search over at DVXuser and dvinfo to see what other people have used it for. I've seen post from people who have used it in features and music videos. I can't vouch for it as i've never used it...that said i'm in the same boat as a lot of people who can't afford the lost stops of using ctb but need to boost daylight. Terrible quandry for those of us who don't really have rental access to HMI's and flo's just don't have the punch. So for the price and return policy and willing to give these a go.
