  1. Can't remember how much I paid for mine...but it wasn't much as far as I remember (the removable PMA lens has a big scratch right in the middle...too bad for me !) Problem with this camera is the ASA compatibility : 25 ASA only ... <_<
  2. I was a bit sleepy...I wrote underexpose instead of overexpose Anyway, if it works fine like this...I'll give it a try ! Thanks :)
  3. Thanks ;) Are there any corrections that need to be done (manual aperture to expose the film "correctly" ?...) in this case ? Or just tell the lab that the film was under-exposed ?
  4. I was just wondering how you set the camera to expose the 500T on a Beaulieu 4008 which is "only" 400 ASA. Could you give more information about that ? Thanks
  5. Hi all, I didn't know if I should post this here as it deals with Super 8 but also with films and film processing. I've been shooting Super8 for 3 years now and I've alway used the now gone K40. I am now a bit "lost" in all available films and I can't really make my mind on the various emulsions that can be found on the market. I've once seen an interesting website with some film grabs that could help me...but I lost the link ! If you guys have some grabs, links or just comments on the various Super 8 films than can be found at the present time, you prefered stock or whatever...this would be kind to share this here. The other part of my topic deals with processing : I've only used K40 with "standard" processing and I am interested in trying some new stuff like push/pull or cross-processing. Questions are : what are the limits ? What can be done with each stock ? In which conditions ? What result can this give ? Did you ever test cross-processing ? ... Once again any picture, comments, piece of information, link, could help me design the "filmlook" of my future films. Thanks a lot for your help and keep on making Super 8 alive ! Regards.
  6. As Richard said, there aren't many technical solutions. Depending on your hardware, money and production chain you can make your choice. - Super-duper8 / Max8 : cameras with enlarged gates. Most of them can't have the objective recentered so there can be some aberrations while shooting on the enlarged side of the gate. Add to this the pro telecine transfert (or you need to find a projector that can turn without a gate or with enlarged gate - problem : optical aberrations...). Probably a good stuff but can be too expensive depending on you projects, and results may not be that good. - Anamorphic : use of anamorphic lense or optical part to fit a 16:9 pic in a 4:3 gate. Seems to be one of the best solution for shooting 16:9. No optical problem is anamophic lense is correctly set. Problems : finding an anamorphic lense (not always easy and quite a cost !), framing (distorted image in viewfinder), make the anamorphic lense fit your camera lense (can be difficult depending on models, makes the camera bigger and difficult to use with other complements such as wide angles, filters, mattebox...). - Crop in post : easier thing to do, main point is framing without any guides. As far as I'm concerned I was planning to shoot anamorphic S8 but things get a lot more complicated with this stuff so I'll crop in post and will still have some great result ! In order to have a correct frame I'll propably use a video tap and check my pictures on a screen with 16:9 markers. Whatever solution you choose, please share your experience. It seems that not so many people shoot super 8 in 16:9 !
  7. Hi Rolando, Up with your topic ! I was just wondering how you attached the LA7200 to your camera. Tell me if I'm wrong but the LA7200 has a 72mm screw mount and your 514XLS must be something like 46mm...did you have a custom adapter made ? You seem to say that this optical complement didn't have any effect on your zooming range...sounds strange : I found some technical information for an equivalent product (Century Optics) and it says "allows for partial zooming ? one-half to two-thirds of the range (from wide toward telephoto) depending on available light." Do you have any explanation ? Can you tell us more about the use of such a lense : you have to remove it for focusing but isn't it too hard (and laborious) to attach it horizontally each time ? ... If you could just describe your first impressions and experience shooting with it. Another thing : you write about "crisp focus" can you tell a bit more about that ? It must be the kind of rubber ring we can see on your pics am I right ? I am actually thinking about filming with an anamorphic lense for my upcoming project so I'm looking for some information that could help me...thanks ;)
  8. :( Too bad for you...hope they'll manage to fix it (at least). I was intending to buy some stuff from them...doesn't seem really pro. How about the repair cost ? Do you have anything to pay (other than shipping) ? Hope not ! Let us know the end of the story and good luck ! ;)
  9. Sorry I didn't notice your post earlier. No real "word to word" translation (too lazy for this) but here are the main informations : - Name : ATVision - designed to use your camera as never before (on a jig/crane...) complete liberty for your shoot ! - Easily connects to any video screen (PAL) - Needs 12V power Y'ouve seen it connected to a Beaulieu 4008 but they are aiming at using it on whatever camera, more information about their tests here. As you can see they try to have the best result possible with any camera. Big idea is to keep the information you usually have on screen : exposure, running LED... but "full frame" versions are also possible. At first, selling price was announced 350? (without taxes) but by making it compatible with various cameras they intend to reach 250? . Kits with power source, screen... will be created. More information coming by the end of the year. Hope this helps.
  10. Up with this topic (it's been a while !). I am wondering about the real use of a steadycam with Super 8 cameras. Do some of you use steadycams ? For what kind of camera ? What kind of shooting ? As for me, I've never used such stuff. I shoot with really small cameras (easier to carry everywhere as I shoot outdoors in remote locations) like Canon 514 XL ; I plan to buy a better camera soon (Beaulieu 4008 or equivalent). I'm just trying to know if it could be a good thing to use for my sports films. It could bring more mouvement in my plans ("travelling"...) but will it be alright with my cameras (actual or future ) ? Will it really help ? Thanks for your feedback/advice... ;)
  11. Nope, sorry, my bad...I wrote it like this to decompose the sound without thinking of the accented syllable ! You got it right as far as the accent is concerned : CHI-non is right ! (TSHE-non)
  12. In general I don't think people will laugh and make fun of you if you don't pronounce band names like a French/Japanese/German native...so as far as I'm concerned : I don't bother, I just say it the way I think it can be said  . But as I know English, German, some Japanese and am a French native...this helps  As far as Chinon is concerned here is the trick : - "Chi" in japanese is some kind of compound sound mixing a "t" sound with a "she" (like in "she goes to the supermarket") sound with makes "Tshee" but "ee" is a short one just as if you were saying the letter "e" so "Chi" would me like "T-Sh-e" ... now that I think of it the "Ch" sound in English is nothing but the same that the Japanese one, you've got it in "Chair" for example ;) - "non" is fairly simple : just add a "n" in front of "ON" (like in ON/OFF) and you get "non" (and not "none" which comes less from the nose and is a longer sound). Then you get "Chinon" : T-sh-e-n-ON
  13. Wow...this thread is so funny :D As a French native I don't have much problem to pronounce most of those names...but seeing your transcriptions is something really interesting. First thing I would say is : don't bother how to pronounce them, unless you really need  Second thing : French language is far different from English not only by the vocab' or sentence structure but also because of the sounds people pronounce. Just for an example the famous 'lieu' of Beaulieu is something typically French that you may have in English as a direct transcription on French... and the 'on' at the end of Chinon is way different from your 'on' (ON/OFF, as an example), in French, this sound comes from your mouth AND your nose...too difficult to explain :P Anyway, for Beaulieu : - 'Beau' is closer than the sound you have when pronouncing 'Boat', just try to say Boat and maintain the 'oa' sound ; you'll get the good sound before your 'oa' turns too 'ow' at the end of the word. 'Boat' sounds like 'Boawt' in English, right ? then the sound you're looking for is just before the 'w' - Lieu is more difficult as I don't have muche reference to use for the 'eu' sound, 'li' is like 'lee' but shorter ... Chinon : - 'Chi' sounds like 'she' - 'non' ... is once again quite difficult to explain as your English 'non' would nearly sound like 'none'. 'on' is a nasal sound that you don't have in English (Gosh...do you have somthing I can use to make your pronounce those words :D ) I'll try to find some more words I can use to 'teach' you some of those words but...I guess languages are just something you can learn when you hear it ;)
  14. You may be right...I tested yesterday night : the left one (with the yellow tape) is for the microphone and middle one probably for phono IN, as no sound was coming out of it. Thanks for your help ! And if some of you have the instruction manual or find it some day it would be great to share it ;)
  15. I finally found some ways to correct the sound problem I had. It's not so bad now... Still I have some question about the connectors of this projector ; here's a pic : The connector on the right is for the speakers, I have the cable and everything...but what about the other 2 ? Do you know something about the little signs that appear near the plugs ? Thanks for your help !
  16. Hi 16mm users ! I just inherited a 16mm projector from Bell & Howell written Filmosound TQI (or TQ1 I don't know) on the side. I payed a bit with it managed to see some of the films that were given with it...seems in good shape just a bit dusty. I just have a problem with the sound which has no (or not much) high frequencies...so sound is awfull with just low frequencies. I would like to fix it but don't have a user manual or whatever could help me wo if you have any tricks that could help me. Just some more info, sound is optical in may case and I just learnt a bit about it and might try some manipulations given on another forum (French one). Anyway if you have any experience with this kind of projector or if you have copies of the instruction manual (or know where I can find it)...I would really appreciate your help ! Cheers. Gybe
  17. You may be right James, rental gives some opportunity to get familiar and test various lightning systems. But I don't have any "professional" dealer near me who rents such products <_< Anyway, I came across some "prepared kits" on the web, what do you think of such kits. Good/bad idea ? Pros/cons ? As you can see the selected on is under $500 (without bulbs, that's true) and seems interesting (to me), combining direct lightning and some softning solution thru indirect light...any opinion ?
  18. Thank you guys for your feedback ! ;) Indeed, HMI lights seem to be quite expensive but with my budget James certainly thought I had better rent some stuff than buy it...which may be true  Concerning compact fluorescent...that might be some good thing for me if this is easy enough to use and can suit any "on location" shots made in homes or offices (which may not be so far from the truth :D ). As far as "working my way up" is concerned, it may some good idea as I could learn how to use some cheap-but-enough-for-my-prods lights but then one question comes to me : when I shot inside with S8 rolls I need "tons" of light so what would be the best light-power for me ? I mean are PAR cans (seem to be cheap enough for me :) ) enough for me or do I need "high power" stuff (like 1k or bit less) ? As I am new in the lightninf field I don't know much about my needs...only thing I know is "cheap is best" :D and that it has to be compact enough to travel round Europe with me  . edit : coming back on Fluorescent tubes : I would like ton understand something, if I have some "daylight" type lights it's possible to turn them into "tungsten" type with some gels, am I wrong ? And in other way round is possible too ?
  19. Ok thanks for this quick answer. Shooting conditions are numerous...but mainly daylight, no special night shots are planned but some places I will visit may be really dark...only some small (natural) light sources (and some artifical lights too). I don't know much about the room size but the shots will be really located : even if the room is big it'll be like an interview scene so a reduced filmed area. I already have a 1k tota-like light (I didn't know it was called tota  ) but I don't know much about the thoses. My dad used to work with this tota-stuff for some photography ; it's really powerful but not that practicle to use... Kino lights seem to be interesting. - What about "1k or 650", what does it look like ? - HMI stuff : what's the interest ? or difference between those and other light ? I mean when shooting ! Thanks once again for your help !
  20. Hi guys, As written in the topic description I'm a complete newbie as far as lightning is concerned. Just played once with some lightning stuff during a photo shoot but that's all. Anyway, my question is not about photography but cinema and video : I shoot some DV stuff but also some Super 8. Up to now I've spent most of my time outside (sport film) but my next project will include some inside sequences where light will become essential (entirely shot on S8). My budget is quite low (let's say it's REALLY low, between 500-800 bucks, minimum would be good for the sake of the production) and I absolutly have no idea of what kind of lightning I should buy. Most of the time I try to use the ambiant light but with Super 8 I really need some extra lights. Still I don't know what power my lights should be (is 250W enough or should 800/1000W be better ?) and what type (color temperature issue). As far as my needs are concerned, I think 1 or 2 lights maximum, easy to carry (cars, trains and planes are part of my life), easy to set up...and possibility to be used with both S8 and DV. Thanks for your help. Please don't be too technical in your answers...I may get lost ;)
  21. Another question 'bout C-mount stuff : There are some C-mount lenses that are produced for video cameras (surveillance cameras and such), is it possible to use thoses lenses on a Super 8 C-mount Cam ? Pros ans cons of doing so ? Here is an example of such lens. SOme of them have manual Iris which is fine but they seem to b elinked with a specific CCD format (1/4" in my example but there are some 1/2 and 1/3 models too). Some explanation/advice/point of view would be interesting ;) Thanks for your help *newbie inside*
  22. Yes I'm sure ! Old Pentax screw mount is m42. I found a m42/C-mount adapter on the web but it seems quite...strange : here If some of you have some references I could use to find one...(I must have seen one on an old Pentax catalog but)
  23. Wow...thanks for your help, explanation and links (French - yes I'm French - version of wiki doesnt have those topics <_< ). So I might have to look for a m42 to C-mount adapter which would work with my old (very old !) SLR lens. Thanks once again ! :)
  24. No problem...and thanks for your post anyway...it's true that you don't need to compare but when you start (just as I do) using some format, you need to find some references and I could not really find my marks find Super8 data only...I needed some "tool" to help me. Now I recently found the magic formula that can help me... :o I searched on the web for this Peleng lens...seems to be funny for my SLR :D This comes near to my next question : when it comes to C-mount it seems that there are different size of C-mount...am I wrong ? m42 is a screw mount (C-mount too ?), right ? But will it fit some Beaulieu with C-mount... Man, I feel so bad at understanding those mount stuff...so difficult to find some clear info 'bout old stuff like that <_< Thanks ;)
