  1. So you're "Wrangler Dave"?

Is that the real you, or a persona created for reality TV?

As for "negative blast"....I would suggest that for the most part this would be a huge waste of time for any serious filmmaker. A lot of work for very little return. One would be better off to pursue more traditional routes in the film business. Trying for On The Lot is a bit like some one placing the success of their financial future on winning the lottery.

CTV in Canada is running the Canadian version, or it's running the way for Canadians to get onto the American version, not sure which?

On a side note I wonder how many submissions from women they will get? I mean there are so few female indie filmmakers out there compared to the number of men.

    R,

    Hey Richard,

I'm schizophrenic, so I go by many alias'. Wrangler Dave is a name I use when I do brainstorming sessions through my company, The Imagination Ranch. It is a name that has stuck with a lot of people. So, did you check out my clip? If so, what did you think?

The reason I decided to throw my hat in the ring is that I thought it would be an interesting experience. You are right that it is akin to winning the lottery -- which I rarely, if ever play. I'd rather work at doing something "real". Which is what I did years ago when I made my film. I think that the person that wins the show will get a nice chance at a break in Hollywood, and since I live in NC, I need all the help I can get.

    Thanks for your comments!

    Dave

  2. I thought more filmmakers would be into the On The Lot idea, but it seems to get a real negative blast here. I think you should have a different attitude about it -- it could be a break or at least a hoot. I have thrown my hat in the ring and would gladly participate. Not for 5 minutes of reality show fame, but for the possibility of making some contacts to move on down the line. Here's my submission: http://films.thelot.com/films/8414 Take your best shot! :P

  3. I have a marantz pmd 201 which i really like. It's two head cassette that I hook up to a shure sm58, all old band equip, and it works like a dream. I then play back the tape into a DV cam and then up to FCP. I should buy a better audio card for my mac, but this way seems to work pretty steady. I like the cassette and you can get them for under $100 on ebay I think. plus I haven't had a cassette tape yet that became corrupt while i've have two CF cards die.

    just my two cents.

Thanks to everyone for their replies!

    Kirk,

I'm in agreement on the tape vs. CF, but I would rather have a recorder with XLR inputs. The mini-jack inputs just seem flimsy and unreliable. What has been your experience?

    Thanks, Dave

  4. Hey, David -- funny running into you here!

For under $500, your options are limited. There are a couple of units in that range here:

You also might want to consider a MiniDisc recorder, if you can find one with a decent mic input. They're pretty inexpensive.

If you have a good laptop, you could get a USB pre-amp and use the laptop as the recorder.

And, if you look around enough, you might be able to find a used portable DAT recorder for less than $500. As usual, eBay is a good place to start.

    Happy hunting...

For sure dude! I was surprized to see your name on this post. Thanks for the reply. I bought a DAT of ebay, but wasn't pleased with the mini jack input -- it was real loose. It would be nice to find a recorder with XLR inputs. I did find a recorder from Zoom called the H4 that has "1/4 / XLR" inputs, whatever that means, but at least 1/4 inputs would be better than that sloppy mini. That unit is about $299 + 139 for the 2GB memory card.

I called you a while back to hear about an update on your project -- so, how's it going? Feel free to give me a call and I'll call you back on my dime (free LD) -- I'd like to hear what is happening.

I am trying to "gear" up to shoot some shorts. I have purchased a couple of Super 8s and I'm looking forwarded to filming soon.

    All the best,

    Dave

  5. I have a Beaulieu 5008s that has been crystal sync modified by The Film Group. I also have a barney for the camera, original camera case, 2 batteries (one of them that is a bit larger than the standard battery; it clips to your belt) 2 battery chargers, and about a dozen lens filters.

If youre interested let me know -- Ive been thinking of selling for a while now.

One problem, it may be huge or not, the pulse indicator on the crystal sync unit does not flash. I dont know if this means that its just the bulb, or if there is an actual problem with the sync. Im sure The Film Group folks could fix it. I would adjust the price due to this.

Sure, I'm interested. Let me know how much you are asking and send me some pictures! I'd love to see it. Thanks!
