  1. What is a Milliken DBM? I was looking at www.alangordon.com and found this? Do they produce decent images?
  2. Aha! Someone else who likes plugins :D Twixtor is a great little tool for slowing footage, you have to work hard to get a really great result but otherwise its ace! Had a look for those cameras... expensive! But you have to pay for quality at the end of the day. I will have to think it over... Ive seen ads for a Photosonics KB19A converted into a high speed camera but what sort of quality would it be??
  3. I will be filming martial art sequences and other extreme physical movements. Looking to see the movement in detail hence the slow motion. I have some other projects that are screaming out for this aswell. Im not making films here just experimental madness! 16mm cameras that go up to 150fps! Where would i find these? Cheers for the info Dan :D This forum is great a great resource, i look through the posts everyday. Thanks again
  4. Im interested in doing some slow motion effects but i have some questions about this. First off as a student im unable to afford high quality equipment but i want to practice before i start to rent . I own a K-3 which is fun but its fastest speed is 48fps. When i use video i can slow regular 25fps footage down to 3-4 times original speed using plugins in After effects. The quality is ok but i'd like better. Im thinking maybe a Bolex or Beaulieu which record at 64fps would probably suit me and using After Effects aswell i can get a decent slow motion shot. Is there a better way of doing this? Thank you
  5. Has anyone seen the korean film Oldboy by Park Chan-wook ? Saw it the other day and really enjoyed it. Ive been following releases from korea, thailand and the rest of asia for awhile now, its great to see such strong cinema from these places. Oldboy has a really dirty urban feels to it, anybody know what equipment they used on this film? How do you achieve this look?
  6. Loved the film, thought it was ace. The story does get a little complicated and bogged down but its still great work. I found the festival scenes breathtaking, so much detail and colour its really amazing what can be done. I dont mind the use of CG in animated films, for buildings, cars and basic shapes. The reflections on the cars looked ace as a testiment to CG. Just wish there were more releases of this kind.
  7. Ive been using a k3 for awhile which i converted to S16. Im looking now for a more advanced camera, something that runs quiet so i can intergrate sound. The later Bolex models using a motor seems like a good idea but it seems expensive for what it is. Should i look into something like the Arri BL16? Im looking to use the camera for snowboard, martial arts and other action areas so good slowmo is needed. Also S16 would be a prefered route to go down, easy to convert. Opinions would be appreciated.
  8. Everything seems to be so expensive!! Think DVCAM is for me, especially because im still learning so much i dont really need super professional quality. So then i need to go scouting out DVCAM decks! Anyone know a good place to rent them out. A quick nose on google will probably do it but does anyone have a favourite supplier? UK based please. Thanks for the advice everyone
  9. Im looking to have my film telecined but dont know the best format to use?? The footage is only ever going to be for DVD so i want to keep the image resolution and quality. I read that the best format to have your footage mastered to is 16:9 so the image looks right on a widescreen TV. I shot S16mm and it seems a waste putting it on mini dv which will give me poor quality. If it was put on this format would it suffer from mini dvs poor resolution?? I was thinking of mastering to Beta-SP or Digi-Beta but i need to purchase a deck. Any suggestions of a good model?? Any advice would be appreciated as this is driving me mad!!
  10. I bought mine for £80 including postage from a guy in the Russian Fed, it arrived in two weeks. Camera was in excellent condition, afew marks on the body but thats nothing. I was worried that it would be in bad condition but it runs smoothly, have had no trouble with the loop formers or anything. Maybe im just lucky? You are always taking a risk buying from a country with a shaky economy so make sure you check them out before you buy. Ebay covers you for losses in certain cases. I find that the sellers who have their own business, good feedback and respond to your questions to be the safest bet. Theres no way of really knowing what the camera will be like until you recieve it, check to see if they have a returns policy even though you will have to pay postage.
  11. Im getting ready to start shooting with my K3, just waiting for the film to arrive. Its been said that the stock lens is bad while others claim it works well. What lenses would be better looking for? Reel Trading do a Nikon mount but is it worth it? As a novice with film i think the K3 is an excellent start, the price of the camera is minimal so you can experiment before pushing for better kit. I will see how things go with my initial tests (fingers crossed) would like to look into S16 gate. Must admit it looks like you could reproduce it at home and for less. K3 cameras sell on ebay for nothing!
  12. When you buy film stock some are based on filming in tungsten others daylight. Does it effect the film if you use tungsten stock in daylight?? Is it worthwhile getting a light meter, dont want to overexpose my film! Which makes are better? Thank you
  13. There are alot of Zeiss Jena lenses on ebay. Are they really that good? Anywhere on the net i can read up on filming technique, better still best books to get? This forum is nearly good enough, soooo much info to be found! Thanks everyone
  14. Whats the claw on the K-3?? Afew people say they have trouble with the camera, im just waiting for mine to arrive so i will see for myself. I read that you can use 35mm SLR lenses with the K3. What lenses would you suggest i buy? Is there any difference in image quality when using SLR lenses??
  15. Just starting my long learning process for film and wanted to know where people buy their 16mm film from? Im from the UK but it seems expensive here for some reason. Would it be better to purchase abroad and have it shipped over. Who do you suggest? I want to use Kodak stock probably 7218 (Vision-2 500T) Also what is the best way to get your footage onto your computer? Ive looked on the net and everyone offers 'High Quality Scanning of your cine film!! They use a 3CCD camera for this but whats the point of using film when your dropping it down to mini dv resolution and poor picture quality? Am i wrong? I want to keep the sharpness and detail in my image for post production. Great forum its helping alot Thank you
