  1. As a director is it important to know everything that is going on on the set. And also to go to film school and learn about lighting, cameras, writing, etc?

     

     

    Well, if you are a perfectionist you would sure want to have everything in mind to get the exact thing you want to be portrayed. I think that if you really love your project, you should get to know what everyone does, maybe like David says, not became an expert at it, but certainly have a modest idea. As far as photography I think you should know a lot because what essentially matters in movies is the frame composition, and although you have your cinematographer and DP, you should be very concerned on what are you capturing.

     

    Stanley Kubrick was very well known because of the perfectionism on his movies, and well, you know how his work is... I don't think you should be perfectionist but I just would advice you to be all knowledgeable so you can use that knoledge to maybe go beyond, and make a good film. But maybe that's not your objective.

  2. I was wondering any good software to record voice over with my computer...?

    Any recommended microphones?

     

    I just wondered how to get clean voice overs, with no "impurities" in the background. Just to record at my house, for my short films.

  3. Theater owners basically rent the prints and then share the box office profits.

     

    You can rent a print from whoever owns "2001" (Warner by way of Turner by way of MGM?)

     

    As for ordering a new print to be made, you can't do that, only the owner of the film can do that, so you'd have to convince them.

     

    However, the expense would be so high that you wouldn't make your costs back from a screening if you paid for it. So the studio would look at the quality of the print in their vault and make a determination as to whether they needed to strike a new print or restore the title. Sometimes you can't simply strike a new print because the master elements are in need of restoration first. This is particularly true for old 3-strip Technicolor movies.

     

    There some new 70mm prints of "2001" made just a couple of years ago.

  4. Hi, I've been having this question on my head for several months...

     

    How does the theatre business work really? Does the studio company pay the theatre to show it, and get the profits for the number of showings/tickets bought?

     

    And, a hypothetical question... Imagine that I own a cinema which shows old films, and imagine I want to get a new fresh print of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Is it possible to ask Warner to print you a copy of 2001? How much would it cost? Or what other alternatives are for art houses that show old films but their prints are very bad?

  5. Hi, I'm going to buy myself a new camcorder to my film my early short films, and I wanted to know what's the best camcorder in your opinion that costs less than 1000 u$s. Not professional DV of course.

     

    I was considering the JVC Everio GZ-MG555, that has a 5mp CCD and shutter, aperture manual control, which is something I really like because I can test my photographic abilities, and most camcorders are all automatic... Any comments on this?

    1. Do you know of any short film shot on Super 8 that I could see? Thanks.

     

    2. Which cameras are good and which ones aren't. I reffer to those that last, quality made, and that their performance is right. And which ones should I stay away from. Thanks.

     

    3. Does a home telecine with a min-dv camera delivers good quality? Or is it better to send it to a place that does that professionaly? Thanks.

  7. Hi, I'm on doubt.

     

    I want to shoot on film. The thing is my budget is low, around U$S 300. I want the best quality as possible and the best camera I can get my hands on. I was thinking of a Krasnogorsk 3, cheap, 16mm, simple, but I've read some complaints about it. Like, the film is going to get scratched if it doesn't come straight from Russia, and that the fps are irregular because it doesn't have a sync motor. On the other hand, I can get my hands on a super 8 camera. I can get a Nikon R10 easily, but the thing that makes me feel uncomfortable is the idea that super 8 is worse quality than 16mm. I wanted to ask, how worse? What camera should I get? I've seen Bell & Howell 16mm cameras on Ebay... are they better than the Krasnogorsk 3? Do they share the same issue with the variable fps with their motor? Are they quieter?

  9. Hi!

    I was wondering if any of the people who has used a K3 has faced problems with the wind up motor, such as irregular speeds of fps when set to a constant speed, and thus the film looking weird...?

    I was asking this thing because it caught my attention the idea of not being able to synchronyze sound because the fps could be irregular.

    And another question... Can one wind up while filming so you can get to shoot longer shots, like "steadycam" shots...?

  10. I wish to present to you a new improvement to Cinematography for SYNCHRONOUSLY Recording Sound with silent Movie Cameras. I developed a simple method for keeping the Sound Recording synchronized to the Film Reel. The two HTTP Attachments below explain the process in full detail. I developed the technique for 8mm and 16mm Camera users, but it of course applies to 35mm and 65mm Cameras as well.

     

    Hey... one question... How can the system work for a Krasnogorsk 3 camera, if it doesn't use any electricity...?

  11. I have used a MiniDisc recorder to record sound digitally and then downloaded the digital files into the computer for editing. I would highly recommend not attaching the microphone to the camera. Even if you think the camera you are using it silent, attaching a microphone to it will greatly amplify any sound it makes. Use a boom pole and get the microphone as close to the talent (or whatever it is you are shooting) as possible while still keeping the microphone out of the shot.

     

    You could also use a DAT recorder, or one of the new hard disk recorders.

  12. I guess another way to ask this is how do you appreciate directing by watching a film? I think I have an idea of how to look at cinematography, acting, or writing. I have trouble noticing what the director has done to the film. How do you measure a director? By the success of the film? This is not a knock on directors, they have a very difficult job and a lot of responsiblity.

     

     

    In my opinion what makes a director great is his ability to understand the story he is directing. Then be able to judge his ideas and think wether if they are interesting and truthful to the film. You can see movies as something ordinary, or you can see it as an art composition where everthing was exactly made and formed in that way for a special purpose.

    Maybe this isn't the right section for the topic but well...

     

    I'm going to shoot my films on a Krasnogorsk 3 camera, and since it's a silent camera, I was wondering how could I record sound. And since I will edit it on my computer, I was thinking maybe of a mp3 voice recorder with a microphone strapped to the camera. Something that can record digital sound, or maybe magnetic tape and then digitalize it.

    Any of you guys have a more creative and possibly cheaper idea? Does my idea work? Thank you.
