  1. So.... an update for those of you that follow this kind of stuff.

The shoot went great and I have photos on the way. I hope to clear them from the on set photographer in the coming days and will post what I can.

Just as a rant, the days were kept to 12s! That to me is incredible. But, that being said, we were behind schedule every day. The director had a few big montage sequences in mind. Lots of close-ups, and I mean lots, plus coverage of each set in reverse order from cluttered and filled with chicken bones, to a clean room, three or four shots later taking a bit of clutter out of the room each take.

The sets were small, and I wanted the entire show to be about fall-off and shadow. I gave each set a different feel, but mostly used a 19" gemball and a snooted tungsten source (usually a scrimmed down baby). I did mix a fair bit of HMI and tungsten so once the images are posted I will let you know more about lighting set-ups then.

The dolly and jib arm saved me so much time! I could hardly imagine doing a show without them. Plus the camera moves really gave me a run for my money. By far the most challenging for me to date.

The other toy we had out were the small dimable LED light panels. They came in handy so many times when I just needed something small in a corner, or behind a tv or in a drawer. I think I am going to have no choice but to buy a kit for my self. When we went on location the only light I had was a 4k Fresnel, I would have liked bigger but we only had a 6500 honda to power it.

The good news is that the Director and Producer seem happy with the dailies and like I said, when I get some photos in I will post some more.

    Cheers for now.

    Hi ,

yes the led panels are great & fun ,i love them for car interiors but they are very expansive 1200 euros i think . Hope you post your pics quick and if you can explain quickly your setup for each photo.

    Au revoir

  2. It would appear that way. Before I became a member, the search engine was not an option. I didn't find anything significant because I was slowly thumbing through 79 pages of lighting. Now that I created an account, I can use the handy tool. Sorry to bother.

    Hi ,

    minolta makes great light meters...

  3. The bar was lit with two 4k HMI fresnels from outside the windows. The windows were gelled with full CTO, as the scene was set at sunset. The room was hazed, and that was it, except for a single 2ft Kino tube which hidden below the bar top which gave a subtle fill to the bartender. There was another scene in the same room which was lit with kinos and a china ball, but the scene at the bar was deliberately kept dark & contrasty.

Thank you very much! Very usefull !

    cheers

  4. The camera was set up for a low contrast look. I switched the detail off, the ITU709 off, used one of the film gammas. I also lowered the saturation to -20. I had a 1/4 Black Promist on the lens all the time, switching to a 1/2 occasionally for closeups. All the interiors were hazed, which helped soften the image too.

    Hello ,

great work! It proves that even with a lack of budget solutions can be found on set and with creativity. I am very curious about how you lit the bar scene.. could you explain us a little?

    thank you !!

  5. Hello everybody,

i'm shooting a low budget video in three days and i need an advice for one shot : the actress is supposed to put her head in the sink (full of water) for a while , and i need to see her face all the time ,like if the camera was also inside the sink .

I have a canon xl2 and a very small camera not bigger than a lighter: (http://www.camera-sports.fr/F_frame.html?http://www.camera-sports.fr/).

My idea was to buy a transparent plexiglas box and to put the small camera inside, but if we do it with the xl2 ,shooting from underneath the box, will i see the reflections or the fact that there is a plastic box in front of the lense?

    ideas ? suggestions ?

    thank you

  6. They shot "Rush Hour 3" in Paris =). Is it really that bad? I am thinking of moving to Paris.

Wes Anderson lives in Paris, I heard.

    Hi ,

yes you are right, rush hour 3, was shot here but they kept top secret the place ,i wasn't able to find it !!

It's funny i was thinking to move to the states in 4 or 5 years ,be carefull if you are planning to move here :

1.French people don't know how to speak english

2.their jokes can be totally lame !!

take a trip here first before planning moving here....i didn' t knew about Anderson ,nice

  7. Hello everyone :)

This new flick with George Clooney and Brad Pitt is filming right in my neighborhood. Its the new Coen brothers movie, shot by Emmanuel Lubezki. Is there anyone here working on this? They have quite a setup with numerous condors, space balloons, process car, techno crane, etc., etc. and is by far the largest setup to come to my neighborhood since I've lived here (since February). Can anyone give us any good stories from set?

    cheers!

    Dan

    Hi ,

you are very lucky!! The only shoots i see in Paris are for television.

  8. Hello everybody ,

can someone tell me which is the most sensitive camera , sony Z1 ,dvx 100 , XL2 ?

If i use the sony Z 1 with a mini 35 p+s technik adapter my camera sensibility will fall from 320 to 80 iso ?Right ?

    thank you

  9. Good work, especially for the commercials shots .I agree with :" There are too many closeups of faces, many of which don't say anything about your photographic style. "

p.s : si tu as besoin d'un assistant , tiens moi au courant , je viens moi aussi d'uploader ma demo .

  10. Hi, I was wondering if anybody on here has purchased this particular Mattebox and what kind of experiences they've made with it: http://cgi.ebay.de/U-Matte-box-rod-support...oQQcmdZViewItem

It seems a pretty good deal compared to the much more expensive brand models out there. Judging from the pictures it looks like there could be a problem with exchanging the filter holders, since the on-board microphone might get in the way. Also there don't seem to be side flags available for this particular model.

    Hello ,

this is not a good one if you plan to use it for a long period of time . It's better for you if you buy a cavision mattebox that cost around 300 euros and are much better .I never bought this particular mattebox because i never trusted it .

  11. I'm going to be shooting a TV Pilot and I was wondering what the average set-up for all the pro's out there is? I have plenty of lights, plenty... of all different Watts, but I am shooting on HDV Digital 720 30p camcorder. What intensity of key, back, and fill, should I be looking at. And what F-stop would look the best coming out of a digital device (2.8?) and at what shutter speed. I plan on converting all of the footage to 24p after the project is finished to see how that looks.

    Thanks

funny nobody (except David) really answer to your question, that's what i 've learned : the secrets of the pro ,die with the pros ,they are never revealed ; )

  12. Hey I'm a newbie and I have a question about the sun outdoors. I've taken a few film classes (I plan on attending film school) which have primarly been focused on digital movie making.

A few weeks ago I went to a workshop on film and learned a bit about lighting and metering. I've also read up on filming outdoors. What confuses me is that if you use the sun as a backlight and meter the light hitting the subject wont the background be overexposed?

I guess to try and better explain what I mean say you have a wide shot with a person standing in the middle of a park. The sun is behind them acting as there backlight, you meter the light hitting them with the incident, set your stop and shoot. But since you metered for the light in front wont the back (with the sun) blow out? I'm a bit confused on this process.

the background will be overexposed ,you need to use a reflector or an hmi source or a strong fresnel in order to light your talent and balance the ratios. Shoot some tests you will see ..

  13. Hello,

I am new to shooting dv video. I have no experience with film either. I purchased an XL2, and a light kit a few years back and have shot and edited multiple hobby projects.

I am interested in learning how to properly light and expose shots using my xl2. I recently learned how to use the color correction tools and scopes in Final Cut Pro and noticed all of the footage I shot had very limited contrast range, most values on the waveform are in the middle, with a few areas over 100% white.

Is there a book or tutorials that would teach a beginner how to properly light and set exposure, as well as how to adjust the specific setting on the XL2? Most information I find regarding this topic pertains to film. I am looking for something specific to the XL2 camera, or at least DV.

    Thanks

    Jim

    hi ,

look a lot of "making of "to see the light settings, you can also get the book "reflections:twenty one cinematographers at work" to get some ideas.

  14. I have two out of three. They are coffee table art books with essays by Storaro.

Mainly you'd get them for the gorgeous stills (and art references) -- there is no technical information attached, or much about the technical side of cinematography, so unless you are feeling rich, as a film student, you can probably find better ways to spend your money.

I wish Storaro had made them a more definitive book on his career and covered both the artistic, technical, and logistical side of filmmaking behind the images, partially just so we finally have a historical account as to how these movies were actually shot.

    i see ...it's for collectors

    thank you :D
