  1. Thanks to both parties for advice and articles. This is all very sound advice and info I can keep as my skills and equipment evolves. For this interview I have an OK lav(Crown 100e wired xlr) and enough info to get that AKG if it's gonnabeat a Sens K6/me66 in this environment. The protagonist in this short is a woman who plays a pipe organ at a local church, and to be quite honest, the interview means more to me than any music grabs. The point of interest is the profound love for this intense instrument despite surving a previous stroke that left her with hemi-plegia and all the challenges this condition would produce. It's my opportunity to applaude her for her love for God, her congregation, and this special instument.

    AKG vs SENH

Plzz Your opnions are gold to me, how do AKG shotguns compare with Senheiser. I'm sure they are both pretty good (model in the 400 to 600 range) and I'm trying make a decission on which to buy. For now I'm looking to shoot Human Interest and Docu stuff, with an ocassional instrumentalist ( Organ, Guitar, etc) not whole bands just one on one. What do you suggest?
  3. Also ,, in comparing prices on mics please share your experiences with the ME66 in terms of recording distance from subjects ans environment coditions when U get a chance,,, thnx FYI SAMY'S.COM has the 66 and the 67 for best prices on the web and the K6 power unit also sells for less at this vender,,, just thought I'd share that
  4. I will not dismiss the addition of ribon mics down the line, but for know I will have to concentrate on a more basic setup as far as preamps, briefly tell me why I need one, what will it do to the sound??
  5. Thank you,,, yes this helps greatly because I can assume from your post that you are miles ahead of the curve in audio knowledge. That said I appreciate your generous comments. I guess for now I will have to do my best with what I have and save the mad money for good gear. my initial thinking was just a way to save DV tape by importing seperate audio, but the work-around is going to have to involve rolling tape and including the stuff I'd like to voice-over right at the shoot and unlinke/delete the unused vidio. Not the best technique but from what you've suggested this will have to do till I get my audio up to par..
  6. Hey kids !! So, I'm looking to do a 15 to 20 minute human interest spot of a musician in my area, my budget is totally non excistant, hence I do have a half-way decent wired lav (GLM-100E) for my subject. I saw this mic (Marshall Electronics MXL.006 Condenser USB Microphone 120.00usd) and wondered if it would be a good for recording voiceover straight to Encore. Any help appreciated,,, thnx in advance joe __________________ Joe X-porter
  7. The answer to this hinges on a couple of factors. 1 what cam and audio do you have now if any ?? 2 your proposed budget 3 the strucure of your home to allow for predicting unwanted sounds At present I am on a PC so I am using Adobe Audition. It's Pro software and I like it. Paired with Premiere PRO it becomes a greater extension of Premiere's audio tools. With carefull selection of a short snip of audio noise the software will match the snipet throughout the complete file and eliminate all noise that matches the snipets footprint. One or two such passes produce some really great results for what you are doing. Try VIDEO UNIVERSITY online for articles and some good DIY tips on VOICE OVERS and mic recomendations specific to voice capture. Good Luck joe
  8. All the above opions are quite valid a- the dvx 100 is quite the feature-rich cam for it's price,,, no doughbt about it b- if your shooting 60i and try to compare the dvx100 with another DECENT - LESS EXPENSIVE cam, then of course it's gonna look the same it's 60i ... PERIOD... Granted it's a better 60i from a better machine but in the end your still shooting a soap-opera-like footage. c- This one's important !! the first thing that we come to grips with when we are exposed to experienced shooters as a nubee (which I am CHIEF NUBEE) is that high dollar equipment combined with no experience, no true vision, poor planning for lack of education,, ect,, ect the result is gonna be a far cry from that of a good shooter who can make the best of the crapiest equipment, video, audio, and lighting respectively..... So here are some questions for you. a- what are you shooting ?? I don't care if it's a 5 minute shoot of your cats playing tag in your living room but I will only watch it if it tells me a five minute story. footage is comprised of building blocks known as clips and if you can string these clips together to tell a story then you will have an audience in the end despite the cam. So take your insipiration to the notepad and think it through. b- where are you shooting?? This is what is going to determine how you are going to sound and light your clips c- what look are you tring to achieve?? The more complex, the more you'll need. Simple footage can be dressed and sweatend for look and sound in post, more complex footage will require the cam to impact the look and feel of your clips so that post will be a more pleasant experience. Sorry if I came preachy with this post, not my intention at all, But in trying to help you without knowing where you are intending to get when comparing cams I can safely say most responses although correct in the way of the information regarding cams and such may not help you at all till you weigh in on what your going for. OH YEAH P.S. someday we will all indeed be RED users for sure, but till then SD and HD is still a fun poor mans impersonation of FILMMAKERS at work. Long Live the Grain and it's Depth of Feild playground LOL
  9. YOU NYC KIDS R SO LUCKY !!! Aint it a crime ??? I lived in NYC from age 4 until I was 42 then due to personal family stuff I moved to Syracuse NY back in 2000. At the ripe young age of 48 I get a dvx100 and the bug to go to film school and the closest schools worth my time are back in NYC.... I wish you youngsters all the best,, For Real,,,, I'm not coveting what you have just hurting for good interaction in my area for my new found hobby.... joe
  10. Oh yeah ,,, regarding white balance, I just read up on that and am now using it properly WAY COOL seeing the colors come alive that first time now I realize the importance of it and will be cautious C U Later
  11. thanks Daniel just got your post,, copied it to previous note you sent Gonna get to use the technique probably tomorrow evening will be in touch with my results joe
  12. thank you so much,,, just did copy/paste of everything you wrote for reference So ND filter (neutral density) is that what that is?? I use to offset a wide Iris so as not to overexpose ?? am I on target so far ?? will be tryi9ng those settings you gave me in and outdorrs just to test thanx send more when you have time joe
  13. Hi to all Anyone who knows the cam and would care to help,,, thnx in advance I'm so green the many settings are too overwhelming to go it alone,,, my interest is to produce personal works that have the look and feel of film, hence the dvx cam ( although I may tradeup for xl2 ,,, opinions welcome ),,, with just the cam and no fancy lights or additional mics I envision documentary like material, using pet - family - freinds - whatever vistas are along the road - our local lakes and whatever else strikes me for footage, I will narrarate a waveform, and include soft music as workaround for lack of audio gear. This much I can do via Final Cut.... So,,, that said Hope that description is good enough,,, What I'm hoping to get from members here is sort of a mission or assignment focused on the 'cam settings' and what these setting SHOULD produce Vissually Speaking. From reading what Ihave thus far, I know that 24P is what I need to get the 'film look',,,, 24P advanced I understand has to do with 'pulldown' cadence but since I'm going straight to dvd will any of that matter?? also I understand 24P is not true 24fps ,,,according to one expert ,,, it's really 29.97 with 2.3.2.3 pulldown (2,3,3,2, for the dvx) with droped frames in post for a resulting 24fps,,, NOW, although I can understand what that all means I really don't know what it means to me, or rather, how to capitalize on this bit of info. That said,, could I achieve film look shooting 30 fps altogether... Any how, I know I could just ramble on but will quickly aske tooo many stuupid questions for lack of knowledge, a hoping there is a mentor among you who might get me going while I pick out a good book ... thnx joe
