  1. Thanks for the compliment. Two full rolls were ruined at the lab thus resulting in half of a story. The first half...just gone. 1.)The negative stocks are primarily sharper than any reversal films. I am not sure what codec youtube compresses videos with but it generally sux in my opinion. Bottom line is to light like the big boys do and it will look good - to me this means natural for this particular story. 2.) The aspect ratio, orignally, is arguably 16:9 (Max 8). I matted it in a 2.35:1 for to crop a lot of negative space and create a bit more of an interesting composition within the frame. Just a matter of personal preference really.
  2. I shot a short with the Beaulieue 4008 and the footage (highly compressed can be seen here).
  3. It sells retail for $3,500.00 and it's really brand spankin' new. I tried to sell it back to Pro 8 buttheir offer was way unfair. U am also throwing in a $200.00 light meter and just thought I'd put it out there for any budding super 8 enthusiasts. I would really want somone who really appreciates this kind of equipment to buy it. I tried to sell it on Ebay once and almost got scammed by some chump from Nigeria. Just taking a shot at it. Thanks for the advice though!

  6. I think a safe bet is to use a chart for that of 16mm. I believe the circles of confusion are pretty close. But don't take my word for it. Hopefully somone else can enlighten us both on this matter. I shot a film using the 16mm chart and all was well.
  7. Great question! While leaving in the out of focus shots may make the viewer appreciate the sharper shots that follow, this was not my intention. In my opinion super 8 has a very dreamlike quality and the "fuzziness" of the medium supports that for me as well as the hand held shakiness of it. I am always going for the cleanest shots and would normally exclude anything that compromises the quallity of the image. In this case I decided to include these shots because it just plain works with the mysterious imagery and hypnotic tone of the music. In essence it is a dreamlike sequence itself. Most of the images in this piece were random shots that I cut together to play off of each other either juxtaposing or complimenting one another all laced with a common thread or theme. Anyone who watches Untitled has there own take on what that common thread or theme is and that's the beauty an "artsy" piece like this one.
  8. Thanks! The grainiest shots are the 500T and the sharpest are the 50D. Ask me the shot you would like to know the stock for and I should be able to tell you.
  9. Go to the below link and check out Untitled under movies: Canon 1014 Test: 64T / 500T Pro8 50mm - dvcam transfer - could be better. Just sharing some footage. Who doesn't love footage? http://homepage.mac.com/paulsavarese/
  10. That's always a tough question. It is not the quietest, however it is much quieter than a lot of cameras that I have heard. You definiteley need a blimp and to keep the mic away from the camera. A shotgun mic is the obvious choice.
  11. The "guides" are two lines in the viewfinder that show the cut off point on the top and bottom of the frame - like letterbox just not solid black. You make a good point about the lens being re-centered only to center the new frame and it is possible that you are not seeing the extreme left and right of the frame. From what I can tell with what I shot, it's damn close to what I saw in the viewfinder. This is a question for Pro8. I will call them tomorrow. I take back what I said about the pro8 reel. SOME of it looks amazing - not all, which I attribute to the operator's carelessnes. I hear you that the reel could have been 100X better. It was probably done when they first started out by Phil himself at his daughters prom. Bottom line is it is hard to deduct points from this winner of a camera. I mean 3K is pennies for a piece of equipment like this that is completely overhauled. All salesmanship aside, I am truly being honest in my opinions about this thing. In fact if I don't sell it I really won't mind because I just love having it as part of my arsenal.
  12. The soccer footage is the worst footage on the reel in my opinion. Anway, are you saying that pro8 is pawning off 16 footage as 8mm?
  13. The lens has been re-centered, so when you look throught the viewfinder, whatever you see in the 16:9 frame is what you'll get on film. Now that's pro!
  14. Mike, The viewfinder is modified with 16:9 guides. The viewfinder also is one of the best and brightest i know of. There is also a knob that you turn to implement ground glass for focusing. This camera is truly amazing, offering everything a serious cinematographer could want to create beautiful images. You should go to pro8mm.com and request there dvd demo. All the footage is shot with this camera and it looks jaw dropping.
  15. You're right my friend. I posted the listing in this forum because it's super 8 oriented and I figured many people like myself involved with super 8 would love to know what's out there.
  16. I expectd some bashing, however, which ever way you slice it this camera is top of the line and IS 100% overhauled w/max 8 and crystal sync - speeds 0-70, immaculate with many, many other professional feaures. So I'd be willing to bet that if somone offered you one for free you'd drop whatever crusty 40 year old camera you're using now in a heartbeat. My guess is that most of the animosity comes from one not able to afford it. If you're not interested, save your breath. I'd rather sell it to someone who appreciates fine craftmanship. Cinematographer's are a nasty, nasty breed!

  19. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. Very helpful indeed!
  20. So I just came back from seeing the film "Into The Wild" and was thrilled to have finally had a great movie going experience. This movie is filmmaking ay it's prime! Aside from the beautiful story and acting lies cinematography that really captured it all - really it was just great. For us super 8 enthusiasts, well YES there was super 8 laced throughout the entire film - as flashbacks. Some looked not so great while some was just, well, mouth watering. While trying not to be too far removed from the story, which is hard when it's actually a good film you're watching, I began to really wonder if an entire feature could be pulled off with super 8. My conclusion was that if you had the right story to go hand in hand with a medium that would serve it well, it just might work, and my mind is now set on exploring what may work. Obviously a glossy mainstream space invader filck is out of the question - not that that's the type of film I am setting out to make, rather a small character driven film with a strong central plot and colorful characters is more along the lines of what I'm thinking. It's always great to leave the theatre inspired and I'd like to know what you think about making a super 8 feature a reality. I know you've thought about, but really, lets talk about it. Paul
  21. Hey guys, I am curious to how you gain the involuntary reaction to differentiating between stocks. Do you recommend a certain method to go about how differnt stocks react under different lighting conditions? In other words, is there a workbook that I can follow? I feel like I shoot a few rolls of different stocks and can't really get it into my head as to what the differences are. What's the regimen? I'd appreciate it i you could share your process. Thanks, Paul
  22. I will take a moment to correct myself. The pro8mm 50D is from Kodak NOT Velvia - man I have a lot to learn. Now that I think about it, I ike natural color reproduction as opposed to that too saturated look of Velvia. It looks cartoonish to me. I know all you cinematographers are sighing right now!
  23. Thanks for the good word. I hear you on the 64T completely. It doesn't hold a candle up to the Velvia, in fact the shot of the clock tower sealed the deal for me - it was the pro8mm 50D. The fine grain paired with the saturation just makes my mouth water. I just love film and always have; it's just great to be able to be a one man crew and play with it all! Have you used the 500T indoors with natural light? How well does it hold up? Again, thanks for taking the time to post a comment. Your matte box is coming along well. Can't wait for you to custom build me one!
  24. Hey guys, I jumped on the wagon and started shooting. I thought you guys might like to see some footage. More people need to post footage - I love seeing what other people are doing with this awesome format. Please forgive the compression. I can't wait to shoot some more, this time with a tripod and more care with focus. I got this camera on ebay and am selling it. I splurged on the bealieue 4008 from pro8 as soon as I saw this footage. I know, I know most of you are against pro8 but I have my reasons after lots of research. Click the link below and give it 25sec. Thanks, Paul
