Daniel Smukalla

I am a cinematographer living in Seoul, South Korea. After graduating from Columbia College Chicago in 2008 with a B.A. in Film and Video with a concentration in cinematography, I made the move to Seoul. I wanted to broaden my horizons on the world around me and experience a new country and culture. Those experiences can be applied to all facets of ones life, and cinematography is no exception.

While living in Korea, I have worked on a wide variety of projects including narrative films (shorts and features), web series, documentaries, as well as with several broadcast networks from around the world. Some of the clients that I’ve worked with are Canal Plus from France, ORF From Austria, RCN from Colombia, Sportv from Brazil, Burberry from England, and the Asan Institute for Policy Studies here in Korea.

My experience as a cinematographer and assistant cameraman has allowed me to work with an assortment of formats and cameras from 16 mm, 35 mm, HD video cameras, and the latest digital SLRs.

Aside from working as a cinematographer, I have stepped into the director and producer role on the Korean generation gap documentary Sedae. It is a personal project that I started developing several years ago. Production will continue throughout 2013, with post-production beginning in early 2014.
