  1. Here in a few days I will be flying to Los Angeles and having lunch with one of the current editors of the TV series "Monk". I'm fairly intimidated and there are about a thousand things flying through my head. I'm not really sure where to begin or what exactly to ask. I'm not looking for any specific conversational paradigm, but rather some things other industry amateurs would like to ask someone who has been around a while and knows the business well.

    Adam,

  2. Great Question!

Here is a web site to look at (see below link) on the left side I would check out "Sony Professional Recording Formats & Media Compatibility". HD CAM is breed of tape made by Sony. It has advanced metal particle tape in Sony's 1/2 professional tape. The metal particles provides >45db carrier-to-noise ratio and low videohead wear giving the user a better digital performance. There is a speical lubricant on the tape which protects the tape surface and maintains the optimal contact with the recording heads.

The most advanced metal partical tape is called HDCAM SR whichs records up too 1080/4:4:4 it also has a Tele-File label with the IC memory built on the cassette to capture content metadata (read in post). Note that Sony SRW1 and Panavision Genesis only accept the small HDCAM SR cassettes. Always check with your rental house with tape questions on there cameras and decks. Most important the DP and a D.I.T. will have some type of contact with POST and production on formats. So check with your DP and D.I.T. before or during your prep.

Sony's Tape department is called "Promedia"... www.sony.com/promedia

I dont know if its the right forum to start this tthread, but i could find any general forum where i could start, so put here.

Well, i am confused what are these? HDCAM....HDV?????

I am a newbie here, starting out, all i heard; could be wrong; is that one can transfer HD data directly to computer via hard disks chip installed in the camera.

Then what is HD CAM? Is it an option to record the HD Data while shooting on a Tape, which have some how far better quality than dv or dv cam or even beta.

I will be grateful to have your inputs.

I'm working a feature next month in San Diego. If anyone could point out a good cine expendables shop down there where I can pick up all the odds and ends that I'll need as the shoot progresses, I would really appreciate it.

I plan on paying a visit to FilmTools on my way down anyway, but just in case I run out of anything, I'll need somewhere's to replenish

    Thanks!

  4. Tiffany,

Our industry will always have the fundamentals (photography) so learn that first and you will start to understand. High Definition (HD) is changing so fast so look at the below link. Then download the PDF file ?Digital Fact Book? it?s free and great to learn from, just thank the men and women from Quantel. Keep focus on your dreams and you will find it!

    Hello,

My name is Tiffany Watson & I'm a 16 year old grade 11 student in Ontario.

    I'm an amatuer photographer,

& recently started getting into Cinematography.

I've asked advice from two Cinematographers so far,

one that's Local in my city, &,the cinematographer for the movie ' Juno'

they both gave me the same advice, to just study, study, study & become a movie buff.

    and all the stuff.

but Im finding I'm having a difficult time understanding all the cinematography lingo, and all that goes into it ,

    its actually quite overwhelming.

So far i've read the 5 C's of cinematography , and a few other books.

& I also own / watched Hollywood Camera Works

If you could suggest any books , movies , ect

or even what video camera's i should look into purchasing for just starting out,

it would be greatly appriciated :)

  5. Panavision Hollywood is the only office with the "Two Year program" which is different from the internship program. Our Shipping and recieving manager and Prep Floor manager both run the program. Since you have an application, I would turn it in and not wait. The interviews are on going year round. If your in the Hollywood area please stop in for a new application and turn it in and give that 200% like you stated. We are busy but always here to help and answer questions and concerns. Please visit the Panavision web site for information and keep your dream in focus and it will happen.

Hey everyone, I have the application sitting in front of me for Panavision Hollywoods 2-year paid internship program, and I wanted to know if anyone here had experience with or has heard of the program. I've heard it is very hard to get accepted for, but if I'm going to go for it, I'm going 200%.

I will be moving to LA in August, and I want to pursue becoming an industry AC. A friend was working with John Boccaccio (Robert Yeoman's 1st AC) and he recommended to me that I look up this program. So I did. I'm wondering if maybe I should wait to apply till I'm in California, or if applying now is a good idea. They say there are lots of interview steps for the job, so my not being there could be potentially counter productive... I think this internship would be great though, it would allow me to meet a lot of AC's, and establish a working relationship. Also, seeing as how I am just moving out there, a paying full time job gives me a lot of financial security. I know they get tons of applications for this, but I feel like I could have a pretty good chance, though I'm sure everyone who applies thinks that.

Any suggestions on what I should do?
