  1. Bury St Edmunds, UK: Vinten®, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, is celebrating the twentieth anniversary of its renowned range of Vector pan and tilt heads. The seven pan and tilt heads that make up the range include the Vector 75, based on the ground breaking Vector 70 model, which camera operators rated so highly it quickly became the industry standard for both studio and OB applications. The family also incorporates the award winning Vector 430, the Vector 950 and Vector 750, which have received global praise for outstandingly smooth and responsive camera control. In two decades since the first Vector 700 was launched, the 'Vector Family' has been at the forefront of the industry and has become ubiquitous in studios across the world. The core capabilities at the heart of the Vector range includes Vinten's Perfect Balance technology, for effortless support, and the unique Thin Film drag, patented in several Vector models, bringing the appropriate camera control for every type of movement. Andrew Butler, Senior Product Manager, Vinten said: "It is a remarkable achievement to be celebrating twenty years since the launch of the first Vector head. The longevity is testament to the revolutionary design that continues to deliver value both in the studio and in the OB space. "For OB applications, the pantographic counterbalance mechanism has proved invaluable, as operators can counterbalance for different weight camera packages without changing out cams or using springs. This really simplifies and speeds set up, particularly at sports venues. Combined with the higher output drag modules, it provides excellent control for heavier payloads." The Vector brand has gained some high profile proponents over the years including director of photography, Tom Guilmette, who explained why the Vector range has proved so successful in sports broadcast, "Shooting unscripted live sports with fast action is a challenge. The number one piece of equipment in the camera chain is the pan and tilt head. The Vinten Vector series is buttery smooth and extremely responsive allowing me to track high speed objects with precision." US based NEP, operator of the world's largest fleet of television mobile units and global production studios uses the pan and tilt heads exclusively on its OB vans. George Hoover, CTO, NEP said, "All of the cameramen on remote sites are freelancers, working across a variety of different productions and mobile units. They rely on the Vinten Vector heads to help them consistently get their shots and from our perspective we like to give them the tools that they know will let them work at their optimum creativity." Another US outlet, Colorado Studios, also chooses the Vector range for its mobile truck fleet, having recognised the value of good camera support from its extensive experience in a wide variety of sports remote pick up. Philip Garvin, Founder and General Manager of Mobile TV at Colorado Studios said, "We currently have more than 200 Vector pan and tilt heads. In the mobile truck business, we've got to invest in heads that are able to perform and stand up to heavy use, but also ones that our users like, and all sports camera operators are happy when they see the Vector heads." In studio applications, recent installations of the Vector range includes the state of the art studios for BT Sport in the UK, where several Vector 750 heads were selected to support the broadcaster's fast growing live programming. For many years, the British commercial broadcasting giant ITV has also used Vinten Vector heads as part of its extensive range of Vitec Videocom equipment installed across the London Studios. Chris Owen, Head of Cameras and Sound at ITV Studios has worked across a broad cross-section of programming ranging from light entertainment shows such as the An Audience With... series to live Champions League football. Owen explained the success behind the Vinten Vector range, "The guys at Vinten really respond and listen to feedback. For instance, with the Vector 750 heads they made some minor adjustments so they would exactly meet our needs. At the end of the day, they have been designed by people who really understand what camera operators want." Andrew Butler, Senior Product Manager, Vinten said, "The durability of the Vector range stands testament to the quality of the design and the engineering. There are a number of studios that still have the original models daily use two decades on. The range has been future-proofed with the introduction of the 'i' versions of the 430, 750 and 950, providing an extremely high quality, highly accurate encoder output for Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality applications. The success of the heads has been built on innovation and like all of our products, this will certainly continue for the long term. We are committed to providing the highest performing supports that meet the future needs of the industry and we fully intend for Vinten to remain the heads of choice for the next twenty years."

  5. Eching, Germany - Sachtler, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec group company, has announced the release of a new range of premium camera support gear - the Ace Accessories - to complement the established Ace product range. Ace Accessories include the Ace Base Plate, Ace Follow Focus and Ace Matte Box, and can be bought individually or as a package. The height adjustable base plate provides the platform for the other two accessories to be attached to a tripod using industry-standard 15mm rods. The Ace Follow Focus enables camera operators to manipulate the focus point of photo or cine lenses without having to touch the lens barrel directly, bringing added accuracy and efficiency to shooting. The follow focus operates backlash free, and is characterized by its versatility, making it ideal for professional video applications. Operators can change the direction of the drive gear mechanism, as well as easily set the hard stops - merely by pressing one or two buttons. This makes it user-friendly and particularly useful for on-the-fly shooting environments. The Ace Matte Box can be used to minimize unwanted lens flare and provides housing for up to two standard-sized filters for the 4x4 and 4x4.56 variants. The matte box has been designed to support a range of DSLR and professional video cameras, such as the Canon 5D. It features an adjustable top and side flags, two filter stages (one rotating), four filter frames, two different sized donuts, one gear wheel and a friction drive wheel, as well as a rear clamping interface. "The new rig features the same robustness and reliability that customers expect from Sachtler products and has been designed drawing on the experience held within Vitec Videocom. The range specifically addresses the gap that exists in the market for support gear that is both high quality and economical. I am confident in saying it will be the best value for money package in the industry at the moment," says Tobias Keuthen, global brand manager, Sachtler. The Ace Accessories are compatible with other brands - including Anton/Bauer batteries that can be mounted in the base plate rods, and Litepanels products, such as the Croma compact LED fixture that can be mounted to the matte box. The range will be officially launched at NAB 2014 in Las Vegas where it will be demonstrated at stand C6025. # About Sachtler Sachtler, founded in 1958 by cameraman Wendelin Sachtler, is a worldwide market leader for professional camera support systems for cinematography and television production, its name a symbol of top quality and reliability for decades. 6. Sachtler NAB Booth #C6025 New Lines are Uniquely Optimized to Power Today's Cameras and Auxiliary Equipment ECHING, GERMANY - Sachtler®, a Vitec Group brand and world leading producer of camera support equipment, will introduce its new V-Mount Digital Battery Series and Fast Charger Series at NAB 2014. The high performance V-Mount Digital Battery Series enhances Sachtler's industry leading roster of products with a battery line optimized specifically to power the digital cameras now being used for broadcast, cinema, and new media production. The Fast Charger Series supports the V-mount battery with a new algorithm that ensures the fastest available charging sequence while delivering superior energy efficiency. Sachtler will unveil these innovative lines at their exhibit (booth #C6025) at NAB 2014 in Las Vegas, which runs April 7-10. The V-Mount Digital Batteries eliminate the negative effects incurred when running digital technology with traditional battery circuitry. Powered by award-winning Anton/Bauer technology, the batteries contain a proprietary digital filter that increases run-time and lengthens life cycle, all while providing world-class levels of safety, performance and reliability. Delivered with a sleek, ergonomic, modern style, the series will include three battery sizes. The 90 Wh model is the ideal choice when weight is an issue, and it has no travel restrictions. The 150 Wh and 190 Wh versions are perfect for use by professional videographers with power-hungry cameras and a range of auxiliary equipment to support. Sachtler's V-Mount Digital Battery Series features an easy to read fuel gauge and utilizes constant calibration to deliver a power status that is truly accurate. When the battery is attached to a load, it conveniently reports the remaining run-time in hours and minutes, allowing the user to track usage effortlessly. When the load varies, the run-time will update accordingly. If the battery is not attached to a load, the gauge reflects the battery charge as a percentage of capacity. The digital batteries also have a convenient D-Tap plug, ideal for powering a range of 14V camera accessories, including monitors, lights, and wireless receivers. The Fast Charger Series utilizes innovative technology to deliver the fastest possible charging sequence, while exceeding the high-efficiency standards required by today's rigorous shooting schedules. It features an efficient algorithm for multi-chemistry, simultaneous charging that ensures rapid charging of up to four batteries at a time. Software constantly monitors the charge/discharge process to ensure that each battery is charged to its peak performance. The Fast Charger series is nearly 40% more efficient than traditional chargers, conserving energy, rendering large power supplies virtually obsolete, and reducing cost of ownership. The chargers are easy to carry and feature a contemporary, mold-breaking design. The Fast Charger series automatically detects which battery has the strongest charge and prioritizes it, ensuring that a fully charged battery is always available in the shortest amount of time possible. The new Sachtler charger series also has an easy to use LCD touch screen to drive activity and monitor status. "We identified a need in the market for a high-performing V-mount power system," says Barbara Jaumann, Sachtler product manager. "When assessing our customers' workflows, we saw that they were running digital cameras with traditional batteries, leading to a significant reduction in performance. We turned to the technology of Anton/Bauer to guarantee a product that could really meet the power use profiles of today's digital equipment, as well as provide the safest and highest-quality cells available. Our engineers then assessed the standard V-mount design, and made significant improvements. I'm proud to say that Sachtler's V-Mount Digital Battery Series sets a new standard for our industry." Sachtler's competitively priced V-Mount Digital Battery and Fast Charger systems will be available to the marketplace in the second quarter of 2014. 8. Company's Fiber Optic Infrastructure Eliminates Logistical Challenges for Global Broadcasts (BURBANK, Calif.) - Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group's Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, provided the conduit for the live broadcast of the 86th Academy Awards®, as well as all of the ancillary global productions from the site, with a logistics-defying fiber infrastructure constructed exclusively for the event. Working with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), Bexel implemented a comprehensive fiber optic network. The customized solution connects multiple production locations beyond the Dolby Theatre, including the Hollywood & Highland Center, the Red Carpet on Hollywood Blvd., Loews Hollywood Hotel, and the domestic and international television compounds located more than a block away behind the El Capitan Theatre. When AMPAS moved the Oscars to the Dolby Theatre (then the Kodak Theatre) in 2001, they turned to Bexel to help solve the logistical challenges inherent in the new location. Knowing that traditional copper cable would not work, Bexel installed a permanent fiber network that included four miles of multi-strand cables from the Hollywood & Highland and Dolby Theatre complexes, as well as under Hollywood Blvd. That underlying backbone is enhanced each year by Bexel to meet the show's specific and unique complexities, as the number of feeds changes every year, in addition to the fact that the industry has moved from standard definition to high def over the last decade. The required infrastructure has effectively tripled in size. For the 86th Academy Awards, more than 17 miles of temporary fiber was also deployed to successfully transport massive amounts of HD/SD video, audio, data and communications signals. "The structure we put in place has to support so much more than the Oscar broadcast itself," said Bexel's Craig Schiller, vice president of engineering and operations. "We're tasked with enabling point-to-point connections for more than 50 different entities, to ensure live, simultaneous broadcasts of all of the Red Carpet pre-shows, the backstage media and photo rooms, the pre- and post-show programs, Oscar.com, and the official Governors Ball, in addition to the Academy Awards® telecast itself." The venue does not have one large parking lot to accommodate all of the satellite and production trucks, so the physical footprint of the production areas are spread out into nearby available parking lots, onto Hollywood Blvd, and the Orange Motor Court adjacent to the Dolby Theater. "Our fiber network is really the conduit for the entire production, and it gets larger every year," Schiller adds. In addition to the fiber optic infrastructure, Bexel contributed key elements to coverage of the Red Carpet arrivals. The company deployed its RF-Over-Fiber antenna system, which has become a staple of the official pre-show broadcast, to provide unprecedented wireless communications coverage not previously available with a conventional wireless system. Bexel's RF base camp was located at the 90-degree turn of the Red Carpet, and was used as the head-end position. Multiple RF fiber-site boxes enabled connections for dozens of antennas to ensure there was no loss of signal, as the production staff required a seamless communication system. The often tight turnaround between the pre-show and the official broadcast is also supported by the system, enabling communication signals to transition from the Red Carpet up into the theatre for the show opening. Bexel also supplied three Sony HDC-2500 cameras, which were used by AMPAS as pool cameras for arrivals, fashion and the main press room. The feeds were then provided by Bexel to domestic and international broadcasters for enhanced show coverage around the world. To support a live event of this scale, Bexel had a credentialed staff of more than 40 fiber engineers and support technicians onsite. Senior teams arrived two weeks before the show to begin set-up for the main broadcast and to clean and test the permanent fiber network. The majority of the staff arrived the Tuesday before the awards to prepare for the hundreds of domestic and international broadcasters who arrived on Friday. Live broadcasts from the Red Carpet started as early as Friday morning, and ran continuously until late Sunday night, with Bexel engineers onsite around the clock. The team enabled the transport of 200 video signals, 125 audio signals, and 100 intercom signals over fiber for the Academy's broadcast partners. "Our incredible team of professionals really delivers for the Oscars," says Schiller. "Over the past 13 years, we've had a number of the same talented people on the project, and the guys have really gotten to know the location and understand the complexities of this event. We're able to do so much more in advance now. Most of the fiber demarc racks are preconfigured in our shop and delivered already tested, which increases our efficiency every year. We've also upgraded the permanent installations every two to three years, allowing us to minimize what we need to layer on top of the existing infrastructure. It's a tough few weeks, but our team's focus and passion for this event enables us to service all of our customers effectively. And in the end, our customer's successful productions are the only award we need." About Bexel Bexel is the pre-eminent worldwide provider of broadcast services including video and audio equipment rentals, fiber services, new audio sales, used equipment sales, and repairs/maintenance. 9. New 9" LED Fresnels Combine High Powered Illumination Output with Energy Efficiencies and Cost Savings Litepanels NAB Booth #C6025 CHATSWORTH, Calif. - Litepanels(r), a Vitec Group brand and premier provider of LED lighting for the broadcast and production industries, will debut the Sola 9 (daylight balanced) and Inca 9 (tungsten balanced) LED Fresnels at NAB 2014. Following last year's breakthrough launch of the Sola 12 and Inca 12, the new 9" fixtures fill a market demand for medium-sized LED Fresnels. Litepanels' industry leading collection of LED Fresnels now covers the complete range needed to deliver a full LED solution for broadcast studios, episodic television, and feature film production. Ideal for studio and remote applications, the Sola 9 and Inca 9 are stronger and brighter than a traditional 1K Fresnel while offering a host of cost effective features. These energy efficient fixtures draw a mere 189 watts of electricity, and generate only a small amount of heat through Litepanels' patented Cool to the Touch LED technology that allow for greatly reduced HVAC costs. They also offer years of color accurate service without the need for traditional lamp replacements. Additionally, an integrated DMX module offers unprecedented control by allowing both remote dimming and focusing. This eliminates the need for expensive dimmers and a dedicated, climate controlled dimmer room, and makes the use of ladders to adjust focus obsolete. The proprietary DMX module works with readily available and affordable RJ45 Ethernet connections via any standard DMX512 protocol device. With these energy, facility and labor savings, Litepanels' LED fixtures have been proven to generate a return on investment (ROI), typically in 3 years or less. Producing high quality, visually accurate, full spectrum light, the Sola 9 and Inca 9 feature Litepanels' smooth dimming, from 100 percent to zero with no noticeable color shift, and are flicker-free at any frame rate or shutter angle. The custom 9" Fresnel lens, with a beam angle from 54° to 15°, emits an even, collimated light source that can be focused and controlled for maximum flexibility. While the high CRI (Color Rendering Index) LEDs in the versatile Sola 9 and Inca 9 are optimized for lighting talent, they offer a host of applications. The high output allows the Sola 9 to balance natural light in full daylight exterior or interior situations, and it can serve as an artificial sunlight source through a window or other opening on a stage or location setting. The color temperature of the tungsten balanced LED in the Inca 9 is designed to match existing incandescent Fresnel fixtures, so that it can be easily installed for side-by-side use. With no external ballast and only a short restrike period required, the Sola 9 and Inca 9 are as perfect for the rapid pace of episodic television and motion picture productions as they are for the broadcast studio. "With the introduction of the Sola 9 and Inca 9, Litepanels now offers a complete LED solution for broadcast and production applications," commented Chris Marchitelli, Vice President of global marketing for Litepanels. "This has been our goal for customers since we first set out to reimagine the traditional Fresnel fixture. We understood the inherent differences between tungsten bulbs and LED emitters, and knew that it demanded a fresh perspective on fixture design. Litepanels' revolutionary LED Fresnel fixtures were designed from the ground up, and we took great care to ensure that familiar form factor and function were not lost in the process. Now our complete collection can be used to complement existing lighting plots or to create a whole new system, offering color consistency, energy conservation, and cost efficiencies across the board." The user-friendly Sola 9 and Inca 9 both include 8-way barndoors, a Standard Yoke with Junior Pin to enable easy mounting and positioning, and an AC power supply. Optional accessories include the 5-piece CTO or CTB Gel Set with Gel Bag and the RJ45 to 5-pin XLR Conversion Cable. 10. Anton/Bauer NAB Booth #C6025 Innovative Battery and Charger Lines are Designed to Power the Digital Age Anton/Bauer®, a Vitec Group brand and premier provider of battery, charging and monitoring technologies for the broadcast, film and video industries, will unveil its Digital Battery Series and Performance Charger Series at NAB 2014. Redefining the power standard for a new generation of cameras and auxiliary equipment, Anton/Bauer's revolutionary Digital Battery Series is the first battery line designed specifically to power digital production for the professional broadcast, cinema and new media sectors. The Performance Charger Series utilizes new technology to deliver the fastest possible charging sequence, while exceeding the high-efficiency standards required by today's rigorous shooting schedules. Anton/Bauer will showcase these ground-breaking innovations at their exhibit (booth #C6025) at NAB 2014 in Las Vegas, which runs April 7-10. As cameras and technology have evolved, so have their power use profiles. The new Digital Battery Series meets the unique needs of 4K camera set-ups and other digital cameras in use today, while providing top-tier levels of safety, performance and reliability. Delivered with a modern, ergonomic, mold-breaking design, the battery contains a proprietary digital filter that increases run-time and lengthens life cycle, eliminating the negative effects incurred when running digital technology with traditional battery circuitry. The series will include three battery sizes (90 Wh, 150 Wh, and 190 Wh), all with Anton/Bauer's signature Gold Mount connector and balanced, high-quality cells that deliver a long performance life. The Digital Battery Series utilizes constant calibration to deliver a truly accurate power status and features a new, easy to read fuel gauge. When the battery is attached to a load, such as a camera or a light, it will conveniently report the remaining run-time in hours and minutes, allowing the user to effortlessly track usage. If the load varies, the run-time will update accordingly. When the battery is not attached to a load, it reflects the state of the battery charge as a percentage of capacity. The innovative Performance Charger Series supports the Digital Battery Series and features a new, efficient charging algorithm for multi-chemistry, simultaneous charging. The new algorithm ensures rapid charging of up to four batteries at a time, all while conserving energy, eliminating waste, and reducing cost of ownership. Software constantly monitors the charging process and discharge curves to ensure that each battery is charged to its peak performance. The Performance Charger series is nearly 40% more efficient than traditional chargers, rendering large power supplies virtually obsolete. The stylish design and LCD touch screen reflect a truly 21st century system. The ergonomic chargers are easy to carry, and the batteries are easily removed from the charger, enabling smooth operation in the field. The Performance Charger series automatically detects which battery has the strongest charge and prioritizes it, ensuring that a fully charged battery is always available in the shortest amount of time possible. The new charger series also has a regulated XLR output to power a camera. "This is the most exciting thing that's happened to batteries for our industry in over 30 years," says Graham Sharp, Senior Vice President of Products for Vitec Videocom. "We're very pleased to be debuting battery and charger systems at NAB that were truly conceived to power the digital age. The Digital Battery Series is uniquely optimized for today's cameras, as well as all of the auxiliary equipment now being powered around a camera, and the Performance Charger series is both the 'greenest' and most efficient charger on the market. At Anton/Bauer, we pride ourselves on not only delivering the highest levels of quality and performance, but of safety as well. These batteries were extensively tested to meet the most demanding conditions and are specially engineered to encompass numerous safety features." Anton/Bauer's Lithium-Ion Digital Batteries are the safest on the market. From an electrical viewpoint, the batteries contain sensors that consistently check temperature and current, shutting the battery off if any rise in temperature or increase in current is detected. From a physical perspective, the batteries are designed to ensure that every cell in a pack stands alone, with 2 millimeters of space in between and air circulation corridors to prevent overheating. This is achieved with a unique, plastic honeycomb that creates an individual housing for each cell. With a high-impact resistant plastic molding, a double skin, and no danger of cells touching each other, thermal transfer is minimized should a battery be dropped or crushed in any way. The high performance, competitively priced Digital Battery Series and Performance Charger Series will be available to the marketplace in the second quarter of 2014. 13. Hilio D12 and T12 Redefine the Power of LED Illumination Litepanels NAB Booth #C6025 (CHATSWORTH, Calif.) Litepanels®, a Vitec Group brand and premier provider of LED lighting for the broadcast and production industries, will premiere its new Hilio D12 (daylight balanced) and Hilio T12 (tungsten balanced) high light output panels at NAB 2014. The innovative panels provide the light quality, versatility and intensity of an open source fixture, while offering all of the benefits of Litepanels' proprietary LED fixture design. The Hilio D12/T12 fixtures were designed by Litepanels to augment the lighting requirements of broadcast studios, as well as motion picture, episodic television, and commercial location shoots. The versatile panels emit a raw, narrow beam that provides high intensity for long throws. This intensity can also be harnessed and shaped with an array of available accessories to light an exterior, wash a set with soft light, or illuminate a cyc wall or green screen. Eliminating the need for external dimmers, the fixtures feature Litepanels' smooth dimming, from 100 percent to zero with no noticeable color shift, and are flicker-free at any frame rate or shutter angle. The panels also offer an integrated DMX module, with readily available and affordable RJ45 Ethernet connections for remote dimming control via any standard DMX512 protocol device. With no need for a heavy ballast or cabling, the incredibly energy efficient Hilio D12/T12 fixtures draw only 350 watts of electricity, comparable to a 2K Tungsten Par in terms of output. The consistently color accurate, long life LEDs provide years of service without the need for traditional lamp replacement, and they emit no UV or infrared wavelengths. Each panel contains a microprocessor operated, active cooling system, which increases manageability and lowers temperature control costs. The Hilio D12/T12 fixtures feature a removable, external power supply with convenient mounting bracket and optional accessories that include a stand mounted plate and an extension power cable. The Hilio D12/T12 panels come complete with integrated slots to hold color and diffusion gel filters and Litepanels' new NanopticTM lenses. The Nanoptic lenses spread and shape the light in circular, horizontal or vertical patterns and essentially convert the powerful open source into a soft light or broad directional fill. The rear of the unit features an LCD display and a multi-functional control with a menu-based button interface. An SD card slot is also built-in to easily facilitate future software upgrades. The user-friendly fixtures include a Standard Yoke with Junior Pin to enable easy mounting and positioning. "Our new Hilio 12 series is a great compliment to our Sola and Inca LED Fresnel lines," commented Chris Marchitelli, Vice President of global marketing for Litepanels. "The Hilio D12 and T12 provide a big, broad wash of light, and they are an ideal lighting source for interiors and protected exteriors. In combination with our new Nanoptic lenses, these fixtures are a real breakthrough in lumen output and flexibility. This pair of panels sets a new standard and continues to move our LED solution forward for our customers." The complete optional accessories set for the Hilio D12/T12 includes the 5-piece CTB or CTO Gel Set with Gel Bag, the 4-piece Nanoptic lens set, an eight foot power supply extension cable, and a power supply stand/mounting bracket. 18. Producers Keanu Reeves and Justin Szlasa have chosen to create a film element of their feature documentary Side by Side on KODAK VISION3 Color Digital Intermediate Film 2254. This intermediate post production step will also provide the producers with a master for making 35mm film prints. The 2254 will then be archived at the Academy Film Archive, which is providing substantial and instrumental support to preserve this culturally significant exploration into the evolution of digital and film formats. Side by Side recently aired on PBS after a successful run on the 2012 festival circuit, and a limited release in theaters. The Academy is also planning future screenings of the film. “We took a deep dive into the evolution of filmmaking technology and spoke to hundreds of artists and filmmakers to make this documentary,” says Reeves. “What we took away is that, right now, film is the only archival medium that is truly proven. We'd like Side by Side to be available for future generations, and we think creating film elements is the best way to do that.” KODAK VISION3 2254 Film faithfully retains nuances in colors, contrast and other characteristics of digitally created images, and offers exceptional dye stability, allowing for extended asset life. Technicolor New York is providing the transfer services, and the stock will be used as a master for generating a few high-quality release prints for upcoming 35mm film screenings of the documentary. By choosing this postproduction path, Side by Side will be preserved for more than a century. Side by Side investigates the history, process and workflow of both digital and film creation. The movie, directed by Christopher Kenneally, shows what artists and filmmakers have been able to accomplish with both film and digital and how their needs and innovations have helped push filmmaking in new directions. Interviews with directors, cinematographers, colorists, scientists, engineers and artists reveal their experiences and feelings about working with film and digital — where we are now, how we got here and what the future may bring. “At the end of the day, film is still the most stable and reliable preservation medium,” adds Andrew Evenski, President, Entertainment & Commercial Film, Kodak. “Only film offers a standardized, human-readable format that has been in existence for well over a century, and methods for retrieving content from a 35mm frame will exist well into the future. When content is preserved on film, no re-mastering is necessary.”

  21. (WOODLAND HILLS, CA) - Panavision, the company behind many of the industry's most respected cinema lenses for the last 60 years, has introduced a new line of Primo lenses, the Primo V series, specifically designed to work with today's high-resolution 35mm digital cameras. "Panavision's unmatched optical expertise and high-quality manufacturing capabilities have now been brought to bear on lenses adapted for digital cameras," says Kim Snyder, Panavision's Chief Executive Officer. "We're focused on providing cinematographers with the best tools to tell their stories with vision and creativity. With the industry's ongoing transition to digital capture, we want our customers to know they can continue to trust Panavision to bring innovative, world-class solutions to the marketplace." The Primo V lenses are designed to bring the look and feel of Panavision Primos to digital cinematography, using the lens elements from existing Primo lenses, long an industry standard for top cinematographers. Primo V lenses take advantage of specific design adaptations to work in harmony with digital cameras, maximizing image quality while delivering Primo quality and character. "Cinematographers tell us that the hyper-sharp sensors in today's digital cameras can result in images that are harsh and lack personality," says Panavision's VP of Optical Engineering Dan Sasaki. "That's one reason why there's so much emphasis on glass these days. The Primo V lenses bring the smooth, organic flavor of Primo lenses to the high fidelity digital image. Our philosophy is to take what cinematographers love about the Primos, and update them for the digital world." Digital cameras require additional optical elements including low-pass and IR filters that increase off-axis aberrations. ND filters are sometimes part of the chain. Primo V lenses have been re-engineered to correct for this. Patent pending modifications eliminate the coma, astigmatism, and other aberrations introduced by the additional glass between the lens and the sensor, while preserving the desirable imaging characteristics of the Primo optics. The resulting image appears more balanced center-to-edge. The Primo V lenses are compatible with any digital camera equipped with PL or Panavision 35 mount systems. They cannot be used on film cameras. The internal transports and mechanics of the Primo V lenses will retain the familiar Primo feel. Since the Primo V lenses retain the essential Primo character, imagery from Primo V and standard Primo lenses will intercut well. A set of Primo V primes will include 14.5, 17.5, 21, 27, 35, 40, 50, 75, and 100mm focal lengths. "Filmmakers have embraced Panavision Primo lenses since their introduction 25 years ago," notes Snyder. "Now the classic Primo look has been refined and optimized for use with the latest generation of 35mm sensor digital cameras." # # # About Panavision Panavision Inc. is a leading designer and manufacturer of high-precision camera systems, including both film and digital cameras, and lenses and accessories for the motion picture and television industries.
