  1. Really good, I like the tension between the two characters in the context of the relentless 'on going' work. There are really great opportunities for the sound design which (with the music) will make this film come alive. I hope you have good foley artist/s on hand also hope you recorded some nice atmos at the location. Looking forward to the finished article. Also really good to see someone using super 8 to tell a story, i think its probably more suitable to this story than any other format would be.

  2. Hi

Does anyone have experience or a manual to take apart any of the Zeiss moviflex super 8 camera's ? Or could anyone direct to buying a service manual for these camera's. I have 2 GS8 synchron, 1 GS8 and 1 S8 all in various working states. I would like to get the synchrons fully working and also to try and put the S8 lens on a GS8 syncron body. Also would like to try and convert to manual exposure if possible.

The images i have gotten from the S8 and with the S8 and my Iscorama 54 are great and i would like to get my synchron's fully working to use with my nagra III (i also have the rare sync cable for this purpose).

Thanks for any help in advance

  3. Well, if LOndon isn't good enough try directly Andec for quick and affordable. Or Super8.nl for personal service and quick processing.

Soho film labs only process film purchased from them ( at least thats what they told me). If price is a consideration then go to Andec, direct (quickest) or through the Widescreen centre .

  4. Hello,

As far as I know, "The Film Group" company can make modification to some Nizo cameras, so that they can have their motor controlled by cristal sync at 24fps (or 25fps as you specify when requesting the modification)

This is how the company is described on www.mandy.com

"Design and repair of accessories to enable sync-sound shooting with film cameras. These include our Micro Resolver, Blooper Slating unit, Camera Crystals, Digital-to-Pilotone."

and the contact info that appears on that website is : telephone (1 860) 529-1877 USA Connecticut

Also here is an announce in Ireland (Jan 2009) concerning a Nizo with 25fps cristal sync.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the info Aaniel i pm'd Alan about the 25fps crystal.

  5. I've got a Nizo 4080/6080 service manual that was used at a Nizo service station. In it are some handwritten notes on a 24 or 25fps crystal sync conversion. It uses oddball crystal frequencies that would be expensive to have manufactured. I'm working on modifying the design to use easier to obtain crystals like the 105MHz crystal modules I just bought off eBay. 105MHz scales nicely for 24fps. Running at 25fps would be a matter of using a slightly different crystal frequency. The camera side of the modification is pretty simple and it should be possible to package the crystal sync unit as a small outboard module that plugs into the Nizo, possibly using the original mike input since almost no one's going to be using it unless they're buying aftermarket sound film.

I'm going to eventually modify my personal camera. I'm not a camera technician so I'm a little reluctant to wade into someone else's camera but if there's enough interest I'll make up the electronics for DIY'ers. I'll guess about $200 each would be the cost for three or four that used my eBay 24fps 105MHz crystal modules. I'll have to do some research on frequencies to see what's readily available and not too expensive to produce 25Hz for running at 25fps.

    Hi

I realize this is 3 years after you made this post but did you ever make any of these crystal sync kits for the Nizo 4080/6080 ?

  6. Here is a link to a roll of V3 500T I recently shot. I like the way this stock handles the blacks more than the Vision 2 series.

Love this night time footage the colours are great, can really see this finer grain thing as well.

Im buying 3 carts tomorrow !

Respect for being one of the first on the net with shots from super 8 V3 500t.

  7. Yes Marc your right hobbyist/perfectionist's - Fred - seem to be able to take super 8 to the next level - better than most commercial transfers I have seen and received. I was just amazed at the clarity and sharpness of the footage and also the lack of grain. Thanks for all of the input, it all seems relevant and constructive. Im just gonna have to work alot harder on my own stuff .

  8. I just wanted to post this link http://www.vimeo.com/1644000 and ask why many of the DIY super 8 telecine systems seem to produce results far superior to many of the commercial transfers I have seen. I realize this is K40 and it shows far less grain than many of the newer stocks but I still think the difference is so great that its worth commenting on. The example i posted also gives much more credibility to using super 8 instead of 16mm for low budget shorts.

  9. There is a very important lesson to be learned from this project. If one trys to shoot long camera takes on location, beware of sounds that repeat at a very quick cadence, such as the sound of footsteps of someone walking, or two people walking.

If the sound is not recorded with a crystal sync camera, when one goes to shift the audio to keep the dialogue in sync, the footstep sounds will have a jumpiness to them. I synced a feature once that had been shot on 16mm non crystal. It was pretty easy to sync.

I now realize what made it easy was there was no repetitive or fluctuating sounds in the background that would have "jumped" when I pulled the sound to keep in sync with the picture.

I was impressed with how the dialogue stayed in sync did you have to break it down line by line or just pull up a couple of times when it went out ?

Also the motion looked really good at 18fps which suprised me because ive been drilled from film school to 24fps or 25fps and usually i can notice 18fps.

  10. Thanks for the great links - are these cokin type filter holders much better than the screw on photographic types ? - obviously they are easier and quicker to change and like you say all of the shoots i work on(sound recordist) the cameras have these type on the matte box.

  11. Hi i shot some super 8 footage with 200T and an 85b filter on a Nizo 4080 - I was very happy with the results apart from the sky being over exposed (

)- flagged up as too much luminance on final cut pro. Will an ND filter of some type help out or is there some other way ?

Also I use the wide angle atatchment alot on the same camera (over 100mm diameter)- does anyone know of a suitable matte box or a diy solution - as much as i like lens flare i could do without it alot of the time.

Thks Lisala (Professional sound recordist - Amateur camera)

  12. Hi

Ive been trying to get to the Film groups site because i need to get crystal sync for my Nizo 4080. I cant get to their webpage can anyone confirm weather they are still in business or not - also is there anywhere else i can get a crystal sync mod @ 25fps for my nizo ? (desperate for the mod -in the UK would be good)

    Thanks Lisala
