I just wanted to say I liked the vid on the bolex projector you posted. I never post here, but I did something similar last year playing with a raspberry pi.

It's not the same as the work you put into it. But fun none the less. Sometime I need to finish that project.

I've got 3 of those. And camera mounts for them. I think. Maybe not. They've been in storage for a long time. :P

would the Kowa 8-z/16H be suitable for a Beaulieu ZM2. it's thread is 62mm and if I'm not mistaken the Kowa thread is 52mm so I'd need to step up but would I lose anything in that big of a step up?

So if anyone wants to own the last sound striping business in America, here it is.

You get the Weberling Sound Striper which does the main stripe and balance stripe. It also allows for micro ajustments of where the sound stripe is placed and can stripe about 1600ft at a time.

You get the Weberline Groover, which is used to remove the enamel off the edge of the film. This is usually necessary for print stock, but may be necessary if you want to try and sound stripe undeveloped film that still is covered in lubricant.

You also get about 100,000ft of AFGA F5 sound stripe and a bottle of cement along with a bunch of empty or half used reel to send to be reloaded. You can get new stripe and cement here:

I have a bunch more extras such a wicks and mesh, an extra diamond head cutter for the groover, tools for looking at the film and pulling the magnetic tape, some extra cogs to switch it for 8mm film rather than Super 8, etc.

yeah. I sold the nagra and the digital to pilotone converter after having it for two years. the thing was huge! have you tried carrying one of those around the park with you? no way am i going back to that. super 8 sound film would be much easier. a moot point for me since i have a crystal sync camera.

yeah, that's the price paul yost set for the last 5 years and I'm not about to change it yet. and since I own the equipment it doesn't cost me as much to sound stripe the film. the the time it takes to clean someone's film and sound stripe it, plus the time to setup the equipment and the cost of the supplies which are hard to get . . . well it all adds up. but if I can get the carts made and have an easy way to load them in the dark . . . .

But get a Nizo 6080. I can't speak for any other model but those are damn quiet. They used to go 5 year ago for like $800. Now I see them on Ebay for $250!

As far as I know it's the last professional outfit in the US. I just put a few hundred feet of film through it this week.

It doesn't seem like a bad deal to me. But then again they do alot more projecting od Super 8 film in Britian than we do in the United States. People still buy films on Super 8 when they can get them. Maybe it's a cultural thing. I'm curious how they are doing it.

Have you tried to sync to a minidisc? Most cameras run at a variable speed and are not crystal sync. It's tedious to have to sync the audio later.

But please tell me what options are better and more pratical that are not over $100 without tedious synchronizing in post. I wanted to use Pedro's 1K generators, but unless you have two seperate inputs, the 1K pulses bleed into the sound track.

There are projectors that interlock with a digital track. I have one. But this doesn't resolve the tedious nature of trying to sync film and audio that have slightly different running speeds. Also these projectors are more expensive than buying 1 cart of super 8 sound film. People are willing to pay alot for the old stock. What if we can give them new stock for the same price as they are willing to pay for old stock?

I don't know how much the size of the lens effects this. The lens is usually a way sound could be emitted from the camera.

Someone making a non-sound camera would not be concerned with the amount of sound coming from it, since sound it not being recorded. Someone making a sound camera would be concerned, because they don't want the camera noise in their recorded audio.

Actually I think that German company you are thinking of that prestripes K40 didn't put them in cartridges at all. They just sold is in 200' spools. Anyway they stopped selling it as it was not cost effective.

I found a distributor for the film and I have the sound striper. I just don't have the carts for the film! I agree, this takes away from the time I could be making movies. But I'm doing this for the benifit of the world and future filmmaker who want to learn on Super 8 while still having sync sound!

Oh, I know they are selling K40 DS8 in 100' reels. Think we could get them to also sell it in 400' reels?

Well I'd shoot 3:1. I love wide screen. The wider the better!

The aspect ratio would be 2.72:1,  (9.56 x 3.51 mm) so very wiiiide!

Imagine the width if it used DS8. 3:1! I wonder if Roger could modify a workprinter to pull through film 16mm in width.

Would a camera that doesn't record sound run more quietly, i.e. Nizo 801 Macro or Professional?  Has anyone had experience with the 801 macro?

No. Why would it? The 6080 is the quietest camera ever and I even sell sound barneys for it so you can't even tell it's running on a quiet day (well indoors you can but that's true for any camera).

I realize and accept the fact that Super 8 Sound film will never be made again my Kodak. What?s the point? I doubt even Super 8 makes that much money for Kodak and in order to even resurrect sound film, they would need proof it?s worth the investment. So I guess it?s up to fanatics like to make it happen. That?s cool. I accept that. So it means I got to get going.

The main thing holding me back is the lack of Super 8 Sound cartridges. As long as sound film can be used in 50? carts I think it can be resurrected since there are still many cheap cameras out there that will use them. But where can I get the plans for them? Will I have to pay Kodak royalties to use them? How does Kodak reload them after they are used once? I really need to understand this process. Beyond that getting the film in large spools and sound striping is easy.

No, The scoopic will not work for my needs as I'm hooking this up to a JK K-104 Optical Printer which JKcameras makes. Oh well. I suppose I could just go buy the whole thing from Jakko. Anyway thanks for the help.

Wow, so you paid the $848 for that camera? Not sure if I can do that. Seems expensive. I'm gonna have to think about it. I don't plan to film with it anyway, just copy film. Since John is finally selling K40 DS8 in the states for $35 a roll, it seems DS8 isn't a bad option. I wonder if I can still get it developed at Cala Foods.

Cool. How much are you buying it for? I want one. Anyway I think they use D-mount lenses. But as this is a Rex 4 I could be wrong.

Yeah, the Rex 4 used C-mounts!

There was a guy here in San Francisco who did the transfers from Super 8 to 2K. The results were nice, but the grain was very noticable. That doesn't mean I think it's a bad idea. I plan to make a super 8 to 2k transfer system anyway, but it will have a large amount of grain.

I'm looking to setup a transfer system that makes 2k resolution images of each Super 8 frame. But first I have to finish my optical printer system. Anyway if I ever get it done I'll be sure to post it here.
