David Rakoczy, I bet my last dollar you will change your tune after watching IN THE MOOD. - Tom Lowe
Mr. Lowe,
I just watched In The Mood For Love. You are absolutely correct. It was so (and I hate to sound cliche) poetic in it's Cinematography and Storytelling. Elegant. Engaging. Simply lovely. My hat is off to Doyle and Ping-Bin for the Images and of course to Wong Kar-Wai for taking the time to create and handle with such maturity this evocative boy meets girl.. or do they.. story.
Wow.
I want to mix colors like never before.
Gorgeous!
If you liked "In the mood for love", you have to watch 2046, another master piece from Mr.Doyle and following of Itmfl.

The Sony EX1 seem a really good camera for sure, if you have the budget, buy one and let us know what you think of it. The HVX200 has made his proof, it is not a perfect camera but you can have very nice image from it, no doubt and also consider you can find a very good condition HVX200 camera used for a really good price now with some P2 cards. You can't get HD and SD out at the same time. I just worked with the camera the other day and when the DP would plug in the HD out I would lose the image on my steadicam monitor (which is SD).
That is true, if you use the HD component out, it take priority on the video out. You need another HD monitor to use two of them.

Hi,
I have a DVX100A for sale. Here is the add on Craiglist Toronto. Price is in Canadian dollar.
-
Hi Wade,
For compression use H.264 from Quicktime or go with Sorenson Media (Squeeze-4)
-
This is really good quality images from the DVX100B. Bravo !
Was is shoot with 16:9 wide convertion lense? What compression did you use? H.264
-
Ok, duhhh, there's a volume control on the top of the camera. I'm an idiot...
At least, you found it by yourself. Lol.

'92 huh? Was this the last non-Imax film shot on 65mm then? I have heard that I/Omnimax is the only thing keeping LF MP alive. I wish I could see films shot on 65mm in 70mm. I think there's a solitary 70mm here in Cleveland except for Omnimax, and it's at Cleveland Cinemas collecting dust as far as I know. I had heard it hasn't been used in quite a while. What a shame.

Here is what I found :
"Baraka is evidence of a huge global project fueled by a personal passion for the world and visual art. Working on a reported US$4 million budget, Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson, with a three-person crew, swept through 24 countries in 14 months to make this stunning film / movie.
One of the very last movies shot in the expensive TODD-AO 70mm format, Ron Fricke developed a computer-controlled camera for the incredible time-lapse shots, including New York's Park Avenue rush hour traffic and the crowded Tokyo subway platforms."
-
I saw it here in Madrid (Spain) back in september 2002. It was shown only in one theater. It was a 70mm print with a six track magnetic soundtrack and it was the sharpest presentation that I've ever seen in my life, with very rich colors and very deep blacks. It was shot in 5-perf 65mm with Todd-AO lenses on slow film stocks (I believe 5247 or even 5245). There was absolutely no grain.
Three days later I saw a dye transfer print of "Apocalypse Now Redux" and while the image was extremely good for 35mm, "Baraka" was superior in every way.
David, try to see a 70mm print if you can. The cinematography is just gorgeus.
I saw it when it when it came out (IMAX) a few years ago 92 or 93. Painstakingly shot on Todd AO-70mm film. The quality of the cinematography is outstanding. "Shots flip from solitary Monks to crowded streets from great temples to images of war firing a hundred and one thoughts in your mind that you never complete."

Par for the course I think. They'll take the story and use American actors.
The French version will be seen in Quebec and that's it. Even the rest of Canada would prefer an American version, that's just the way it is.
Look what the Hollywood folks did with the UKs "The Office." They just made an American version with USA actors.
Damn funny too I might add.
R,
But it will never be the same film, however.
Phil wrote: "Careful. Americans want remakes, and because they control what the big LA companies choose to distribute worldwide, it's what we get. It isn't necessarily what we want."
I really hope so, if not, it will be an attack to your intelligence. Have a chance to see the real C.R.A.Z.Y. first.
-
Yes, I agree C.R.A.Z.Y. is, for me, one if not the best french Canadian film in the decade or more.
Et oui, Ben, the film make me think about Ang Lee's "Icestorm" for the mood. The casting was just perfect for all the characteres.
Also Ben, you did not mentioned how good the music choice is and just perfect to give the mood of the 60's and 70's; may be it is for me, I'm born 9 days after the main charactere Zac.
A must see for all film lovers, you won't regret it.
p.s.: You can be prood of this one, no doubt.

Very nice reflexions. What qt compression settings did you use for such nice quality but rather small file?
Hi JoLaurits,
I used Sorenson Squeeze 4 for MPEG4 by Sorenson Media. And wait to see the new codec for MPEG4 (ADV) or H.264 in the new Quicktime, very, very nice quality.

Why not shooting in 24P or 24PA, that is the DVX advantage and the preset Cine Gamma at F5 and F6 just look awesome. You can then play with them if you want to adjust some like Details, Master ped, Chroma level, but the preset are just excellent.
Here is a small movie I've done with water reflexions:

You can find what you looking for at the DVXUSER.com site, there is a test comparison side by side between the two cameras. If you shoot with the anamorphic lense, you will have the best resolution with the DVX100A, but you will loose the ease off by the use of it. You can find all the response to your answer for the DVX.
-
I think A Very Long Engagement was the right choice and the Aviator not too far from it. ;)
-
Chris, just go to DVXUsers.com, there is a lot of footage from that nice camera.

This is my first post here and I just found that discussion on Janusz Kaminski, who I think wether Mr. fstop agrees or not is just an outstanding director of photography. If Speilberg (Spielly for you) took him to work on his films, there is probably one good reason; TALENT.
If you want to become as good as him, one day, stop to talk like you are and just try to learn from a talented DP as JK. Sans rancune !!!

I completely agree with you on this.
