  1. The increase contrast and saturation is very subtle, they look very similar in S8 except for much finer grain in the 100D. Switching the two, would be almost like taking 64T and wiping off the grain.

    The ideal stock list in my opinion:

    100D color reversal

    Tri X B&W reversal

    50D color Neg

    200T color neg

    500T color neg

    Hi;

    I would not leave out Plus X B&W reversal, it's ideal for S8, fine grained and sharp with great contrast, it's the B&W partner to 7285 100D colour reversal.... Also, even though I'd love 7201 in S8, in the Beggars can't be choosers scenario were in 7217 rated at 64t with a W85 filter is probably not too far from 7201. It seems the 7285 100D colour reversal is more likely to happen and this at least is a BIG positive, I've also been reading that it should actually work better with the auto asa cams than the 64t did?

  2. Not yet. Getting some pushback on not having two reversal films, so it may boil down to an either/or between 7280 (E64T) and 7285 (E100D).

    Hi;

    Thanks John, I must say I'd rather the 7285 and It certainly seems this is echoed by the majority of people using the format, judging from the major film forums at least.

  3. Even if Super-8 came on rolls instead of cartridges and you could shoot tiny tests, under 1 minute long, you'd run into the same problem that 16mm and 35mm users run into -- labs have minimum length charges, so odds are high that even if Kodak made 25' cartridges, a lab would charge the same to process as a 50' cartridge. As for keeping only one test on a roll, you can do that now -- you'd just be wasting the rest of the roll.

    If it's hard to convince Kodak to make Super-8 cartridges of 7201 50D because of the large number of cartridges that one wide-roll makes, and then warehousing all of those cartridges and then hoping that they all get sold before they expire -- now multiply that with the idea of Kodak putting these stocks in TWO types of cartridges as well and warehousing those, etc. It's not going to happen.

    I'd go back to begging Kodak to put out 50D in Super-8 and just live with occasionally wasting part of a cartridge for an occasional test, because you've got to pick your battles.

    Hi;

    I agree with David on this, Asking Kodak to produce smaller rolls of S8 is like trying to get an oil tanker to make tight turns, With S8 it's more a beggars can't be choosers scenario unfortunately, just portion out a part of a cart for a test and then save the rest for something else, this is the brilliant thing about the cart system. Come on kodak 7201 and 7285 in S8 please....

  4. Hi;

    Andy, the old visa details across two sepperate emails from preferably two sepperate email accounts trick... They seem very used to this method and although a bit funky it works, just give them half the info etc on one and the other half on the other and make it all very CLEAR whats what. I used the online order form to actually make the order which keeps things simple.

  5. Hi;

    Andy, I ordered some S8 50D around mid june but waited on payment and have had zero response, I kinda get the feeling they're still trading but are sinking under the weight of unexpected orders, seems slightly insane to be taking out large adds in Small format etc when you can't handle the orders. Wittner on the other hand responded quickly to my 100D order. Good luck

  6. Film stares Hillary Swank and is Produced by Rebert Zemeckis. This week will be Time-Lapse footage around the abondoned mines of Victor, CO then I'll be off to film some swamp lands with dead and decaying animals. Just got the call this morning. Details aren't 100%, but a go!!!

    Man, this is the most I've ever been pumped. Wish me luck!

    Thanks Everybody!

    Hi;

    Cool! much like Eric Edwards did for My Own Private Idaho... I would just love that,

    Good luck and enjoy it.

  7. OK let's hear what you have to say and why.

    Hi;

    I've never used a Beaulieu but I use a Leicina Special and can safely say it helps to make super 8 look all together a different animal to the soft and jittery stuff I used to think it was, of course it can't save you from bad work but we all know that dont we.

  8. The problem with ordering from Wittner is that you will likely have great-grandchildren before you get a reply from them. I really think they went out of business and forgot to take down their website.

    Hi;

    I very recently ordered 5 carts of their re- packaged 7285 S8 and had immediate responce and very good service!

  9. I have the very camera you speak of and have to say I love the camera, about to have it converted to crystal sync. Give Duall Camera a call, they service Nizo and will probably have what you are looking for if not be able to steer you in the right direction.

    Hi;

    Chris, mind if I ask who and where your getting the sync work done on your 6080?

    Cheers:

    Hello All--

    The cinematographer on my newest project is currently working on converting a Nizo 6080 from a Super8 to a Super-Duper/Max/Ultra 8. However, he's ran into a problem. When he pulled the gate off to have it widened, a few tiny (1mm by 3mm he says) springs flew out and onto the floor. Needless to say he can't find them anywhere, and the camera can't produce a steady image without them.

    We really need to have this camera converted, tested, and prepared as soon as possible. Does anyone know where we could find these parts, or where I could send the camera to have someone install them and get it running again.

    (By the way, the gate is cut and ready.)

    Thanks for the help. I'm in a tight spot on this one.

  10. Hi, so you managed to track a 10mm cinegon down then Olly, imo, the cinegon fitted to the special gives the best super 8 images, no other lens yeilds sharper, 3d like images compared to the cinegon. As i read somewhere before, it was/is the most corrected lens ever made for the super 8 format, whether thats true or not, the lens delivers superb images.

    Hi;

    I sure did, it was a tad pricey but I must say it's amazing, I'm more excited about what I can do with super 8 than any other format right now and I shoot a fair bit of S16. S8 shot with the Leicina and Cinegon has such a solid sharp look but still has the character and personal touch of classic S8. I have also been very impressed by the 6-66 Optivaron zoom, also a great lens it seems.

  11. Hi;

    Thanks for sharing this, very interesting. I use the Widescreen-centre's flash scan 8 sytsem quite often but I would never dare ask them to transfer neg and actually have to grade it, they are just a bunch of nice fellas with a decent little machine, not colorists by any stretch. I've found however that using them for reversal transfer where I've worked hard on building 99% of my look into the stock has yielded very decent results, despite what some may say neg is strictly for pro colorists with Ranks and Ursas to play with, hence the cost which really makes neg super 8 in the UK a tough decision when as you say shooting S16 is around the same if not cheaper in the end! On a positive though since re-discovering S8 reversal these last few years and how to make it look it's best I've made so much more personal works on film instead of DV.

  12. You will see little if any improvement in the sharpness of Super8 regardless of the optics you use because the camera has no pressure plate. Someone makes an add on pressure plate that you insert into the cartridge which improves performance.

    Hi;

    Well I sure see a difference between the cinegon on my Leicina and the zoom on my Nizo....

    Olly

  13. Also if your planning to use something like a Bolex EBM in your test remember the camera and the lens will be 30 years older than an HD camera, which doesn't make for a very fair comparison for film.

    Hi;

    True but the box is just the box really, if it's well serviced and maybe has a PL mount adapter it should be great, it's the film stock that is the HD sensor of the film world.

  14. Again, this is just from memory, but I seem to recall reading that the shutter speed of the Leicina at 25fps is short enough to reduce the fluidity of motion in certain situations, thereby creating a "strobe" effect for lack of a better term. Is this true? I thought it had been suggested that this effect could be lessened by increasing the shutter angle, thereby in effect, decreasing the shutter speed. But I guess that's not an option with the Leicina.

    Hi;

    Not noticed this myself, sure your not mistaking it for the beaulieu? I recall hearing about this with one of the models....

    Olly

  15.

    Well if you shoot the neg stocks it's the same with more grain.

    Hi;

    Sorry, been on the happy juiice, it also of course does not have the resolving power of 16 but when I see it I just think so what, it's a beautiful way to record the world.

    Olly

  16. Okay. I do find the grainy look appealing.

    What about S8 transfer to SD for braodcast? Any issues?

    Also, what can you say about the learning curve of S8 vs 16mm?

    Thanks again.

    Hi;

    Well if you shoot the neg stocks it's the same with more grain. I started with K40 S8 then went to 16 and super 16 but have recently really got back into S8 since it was revived by new stocks, I love the texture. I'd say look at the higher end cams Leicina etc as stability can be an issue, also manual ASA, however I really think well shot S8 neg stocks are more than a match for dv/hdv in terms of sheer quality.

  17. Hello,

    I would like to hear results from anyone that has used the built-in 85 Filter in their camera (not a 85b attached to the lens) and Kodak's Ektachrome 64T Super-8 Film (Quality, cast, color etc..)...

    I have a Nikon R10 and Nizo 6080.. just wondering if I should purchase an 85B filter.. My processor here in Seattle recommends a 85B while shooting outside with 64T...

    Thanks in advance..

    Hi;

    Just got back my 1st two rolls, I shot the first 30 secs with only the in camera filter inplace, then I threw on a 1.5R warming filter (a VERY subtle orange) The difference was very clear, without it was a little cold and blue, with filter it was.... well warmer and richer, I will be using the warming filter in future for this stock. Must say after the dismal reports I thought this stock was actually not bad at all! Although it was the 1st rolls I'd shot with my Leicina Special so that could have something to do with it ;)

  18. "Depends on what you are and how you are approaching these things and how serious you take super 8"

    I want to produce the sharpest, steadiest picture, with the most amount of control over quality.

    Hi;

    you should also check out the Leicina Special, probably the steadiest and sharpest images in S8 with fantastic control....

  19. I shoot my educational documentary films with a bolex EBM and like it. The camera is much lighter as if you schlep the extra motor and the spring wound unit plus the batteries etc. I only shoot, using a mag, as I can not change film spools every 2 minutes of footage. So I would not use the spring wound. And as I shoot all my stuff with sound I am happy to have the option to plug in my crystal sync unit. Single frame and time laps are not needed in my style of documentary work. So it is limiting to shoot with a EBM but limitation makes sense as too many options just complicate your life unnecessarily.

    Hi;

    Different strokes... I like the sepperate motor as I can strip the camera back down to a little clockwork mos cam for shooting on the road, what you say makes perfect sence for what you do. I think for someone who intends to use the camera for anything from crystal sync narrative to clockwork pick up shots and timelapse the REX-5's and SBM's a far more versatile.

    Olly

  20. Ok now I'm beginning to understand - the synch unit also supplies the power on the Bolexes. Is this an external tethered unit or does it plug in to the camera? Sorry I'm not sure where to get this basic info on the web.

    The REX5 looks interesting.

    Hi;

    It screws into the side of the body and is powered by a 12v battery.
