No, sound is most important. Also, when you're shooting events it is advisable that you have at least 2 person (including you), but a 3 man crew is the best. The problems with rigs and lighting fixtures is that they're too finicky and it's one more thing that you have to carry around.
For sound, I would get a recorder (tascam, or zoom) to record out of the soundboard. wireless mic are also important especially for weddings. I'm wishing to get into sound more somewhere in the future.
I usually use tripod, monopod and handheld steadicam the most. One of my friend try to use a rig for a quince and he found it too finicky trying to switch to a slider.
For lighting, you only need it if the reception lighting is too low. Small LED lights are really useful for events. Just know that shootings events is much much different than shooting a movie.

No, there's no one on this forum except for me. Anyway, in my opinion, the best film school will help you make contacts. This is the university first year so I don't know how well it can get you contacts.

I also prefer 2D. I saw movie like Avatar and Avengers in 3d but it doesn't really add to the movie experience. Kinda hurt my eyes sometime to be honest. I think it'll go away but only time will tell.

On that basis, don't worry about it too much. I think you might find 50 is pretty narrow on an APS-sized sensor.
Exactly, I myself have found that 50mm is too narrow so now I have a 35mm f 1.4 and 85mm f 1.4. I totally skipped the 50mm (except for a macro)

I would recommend that if it's mostly for video then get a nikkor 50mm f 1.4 ai or ais. I'm looking on ebay right now and there's 1 for $160. The 50mm f 1.8 focus ring is extremely small so it's hard to get a good focus. Also with a Nikkor lens, it has a manual aperture so you can use it with other camera instead of only Canon.

Is he using it mostly for photography or video? You can save a lot of money by buying manual primes. The 50mm f 1.8 have great images but have terrible build quality and autofocus. The 50mm f 1.4 is much much better.

Do you have enough money for a DSLR? You probably need about $350 for a used t2i and then spend a little bit more to get lenses but that would get you started. There are also a lot of youtube channels that teached you the basics and forums are always good. There are also plenty of books on cinematography.

If you had shown up on my set in Parry Sound Ontario you would of been hired in two seconds! There is a labour shortage of film crew workers in Ontario right now. I don't know how someone can't get hired.

Finally watching this show... Even though the quality is terrible on Netflix, is it me or does the show have focus problem? Seems like to me they're shooting with telephoto lens wide open as much as possible to get shallow depth of field. Combine that with moving subjects and it's a tough job for the first ac.

it may bother you guys but do you think the audience really care if a shot is a little bit out of focus? I still watch old movies not because I like them to be sharp but because I like the story. I think that the color and lighting of a movie is more important visually than a little bit out of focus.

I own a mint set of Pentacon Six primes and I just love them.
They are elegant, organic and buttersharp.

You live in NY and you can't find jobs? that's weird, I would have thought there will be a lot of production happening there. Anyway, have you try Craiglist yet? I found my first job on set as a PA in Houston which doesn't have a lot of production but I'm thinking you should be able to find some job through there.

I thought this thread was gonna be talking about lens...Anyway, how do you find New York JR? I live in Houston, Texas and there are barely any work here. Why don't you count yourself lucky you're living in a hub for production?

I say if you have to, turn up the gain in camera, and then do noise reduction in post. Don't know why you wouldn't just turn on some lights.
