  1. hi, perhaps I should re-phrase my original question... which 35mm SLR lenses (any brand, Nikon, Pentax, etc) would be best for 16mm using a c-mount adaptor? I need focal range roughly in the 70-300m area. Don't have to be too fast as its all for bright outdoor shooting.... if I could find a good quality zoom in that range or similar or set of 3 primes i'd be happy...
  2. Hello, I need reasonably long telephoto lenses for my Bolex RX5. I'm debating whether to use an almost new 35mm SLR Pentax Sigma 70-300mm APO f4-5.6 zoom lens with a c-mount adaptor or using a set of 3 older 35mm SLR Pentax Super Takumar M42 screw mount lenses with c-mount adaptor, a 300mm f4, 200mm f4 & a 90mm f2.8. All these older lenses are optically in great condition. One person has told me that the newer zoom lenses will possibly be better than older prime lenses as they have newer coatings, technology etc but I always thought prime lenses were optically better? Thank you...
  3. since i'm not making any prints or doing a 35mm blow-up, would be all be transfered to video, would negative film still be the best choice?
  4. Sorry if this is a silly question.... but why do motion picture people prefer using neg film, saying it delivers less grain, gives better colours, etc but still photography people swear by using reversal film? I know all magazine publications (that i've dealt with anyway) will only use shots taken on reversal film as the editors say it gives the best colours & reproduction.... Can anyone explain??
  5. thanks Michael.. She wants to buy me a present, I couldn't think of anything else since its hard to come by here in Oz... Any opinions on which of the Camera Assistant manuals is better?
  6. hello all, my girlfriend is currently in the US & i've asked her to bring me back the book "The Camera Assistant Manual" by David Elkins. firstly can anyone recommend this book & where can she buy it from at a reasonable price? she'll be in Houston & New York/Silver Spring... thanks...
  7. Hello all, I'm been TV camera assisting & doing the odd freelance camera job for some of the TV News stations & will be applying for some jobs over the next few months as a cameraman. People have told me to get a reel together of my work/footage. Here are my questions: 1. What type of things should I put on the show reel? 2. How long should it go for? 3. Should it contain things like stock footage, artist film work, etc? Thanks to all who reply...
  8. Hello all, This may be a stupid question but what generally happens with a 35mm movie print after the cinema has finished showing it? Do the cinemas actually buy the print or do they rent it? Is it returned or does it get destroyed? (for piracy & copyright reasons)
  9. thanks Rich... i've sent you a message via your site...
  10. Hi Rich, I'm a huge fan of the show... i'm sure it would've been great to be able to work on the show... Do you have an email address I can contact you on to ask you more questions about the show or would you rather me just post them on this forum? Thanks...
  11. after doing some more research.. i'm pretty sure the office was shot on digi beta... but thats all i've been able to find out so far....
  12. I personally think it will be very similar to the UK version, with similar jokes & character styles, just instead using american actors & setting...
  13. my thoughts exactly.. it was sad to see it end but they definetely finished on a high note. the funny thing is I usually dont like British comedy... The Office is my favourite now... I've heard there is going to be an american version of "The Office", is this true?
  14. Hello, After a very long wait, I've finally got the recently released "The Office" final 2 episodes christmas special on DVD. I thought it was very hilarious & well out together. So simple yet so smart. Does anyone have any tech details as to what video format was used, how it was edited or any other tech details? Any info would be great!
  15. here is another link of plans for another 35mm adaptor... http://www.enormousapparatus.com/35adapter.htm
  16. thanks for the info Mitch... here is a good link I found also on a homemade version Chris, http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/dof/index.htm they actually use a dummy CD as the rotating ground glass... surely using a proper ground glass would be better... any opinions on these plans??
  17. Hello all, I've been researching the web over the past few days in ways to make a 35mm lens adaptor but I have a few questions to ask which hopefully someone will be able to answer... 1. Since the lens inverts everything onto the ground glass, do you just just invert everything back to normal in post? Can you invert the LCD or viewfinder on your video camera for ease of shooting? 2. I've seen some adaptors with rotating shutters, what is the purpose of this shutter & is it necessary? 3. Is the exposure now controlled via the aperture ring on the 35mm lens? If so, would that mean you couldn't use EOS 35mm lenses on the adaptor since it has electronic aperture? Thanks to all who reply...
  18. Hello all, Does anyone have any examples of TV program proposals tey've written which I could look at it as a sample? I'm doing one for my local free to air community channel & would like some ideas before I start writing. Thanks to all who help out...
  19. Hello all, Whats the best way to give Tri-X black & white film a dirty grainy look? I'm shooting traffic & city areas & want to give it that yucky busy inner city look. Will be shot both morning(between 7-9am) & late afternoon (about 5pm) when the traffic is busiest. I've heard push processing & using a red filter can do this. Any advice would be great...
  20. Hello all, Sorry if this is a relatively basic question... I know the basics of blue screen & superimposing a different background onto another but what about making green invisible? I've seen a relatively low budget skateboard video where they painted their skateboards a bright green colour then made them look invisible ( i assume this was done in post) Is this a similar technique as blue screen? The reason I ask is I want to paint a glove that green colour & make someones hand look invisible. What do I need to achieve this? Or is this only capable with a big budget? Thanks to all who reply...
  21. Hi all, For my next film contest feature, I have the choice of using either a PDX10P (which I own) or hiring a XL1s from the local film club here for a pretty cheap rate. Now before anyone suggests a DVX100 or XL2, they're out of the question as no one rents them where I live.. My feature is being shot entirely in the 16:9 format which will be projected for a small audience via a data projector (if it wins that is!) I know the XL1s has a larger CCD size & probably better optics than the PDX10P but it has native 16:9 & since I already own the PDX10P, is it worth hiring the XL1s since its a 16:9 feature? Is the 16:9 picture on the PDX10P better than the XL1s? Thanks to all who reply..
  22. Hello all, Thanks for the replies... Would you say the DV Film Maker Software is better than the de-interlacer on Premiere 6.0? I ask this as I already have Premiere 6.0 so am wondering if its worth buying DV Film Maker (even though its not that expensive).
  23. Hello all, Ok, so I've read up as much as I can on how to light a scene for video, using filters, zoom to create shallow DOF etc & i'm reasonably confident I can achieve all this to make my interlaced mini DV more suited for the look I want for my short film (well its actually a short video). Unfortunately where I'm located there's no where to hire a XL2 or DVX100 so my PDX10 is the only option really. But what can I do in post production? I did a quick search & found DV Film Maker software. Has anyone used this & what is it like?
  24. Do you mean bounce reflected light from outside into the window or bounce light from the inside? Or perhaps both?
