  1. Honestly, I don't thing cinematography lies in the camera. It lies in looking at the world of light, shadow, and motion. Light shadow and motion can be learned on any image device-- even an iphone. ............ get into the thinking-- not just how to light or frame, but why you're lighting and framing because truthfully, while we all like to pretend we're the tops in visual importance, our gaffers, acs, ops, and the other department heads which we work with are all there to support us, and often have ideas and methods we'd never of thought of.

Well said statement ..In agreement ..

  2. Hi David:

That's interesting note on your experiments. Me too on learning path now ..But all these confuses me a lot ..whole set of "settings" coupled with mathematical confusions.. - almost explodes in my brain, when I actually wants to shoot a good shot. :)

So I decided to go step by step now as given below - it is impossible for me to comprehend everything until I practice a lot- I believe.

    # First focus on compositions & only compositions.. Patterns back/fore ground, rule of third, shapes ..etc etc..

Am reading &referring on arts and paintings now a days and which really gives great enthusiasm -Regret for being out of these world for such a long long time.

    # My next focus would be command over my camera to control light and play around..

    # Post which, I would love to study more on colors and its effects..

    # And progress to light effect and play around them.. possibly indoor first with available lights and then to outdoor..

Hope these basics of still photography will turn to sound platform for cinematography too..

  3. Thanks for the advice! I actually wanted him to crash his car right after he saw the billboard. Thus, end with him waking up from his mild coma, everything being a dream. However, it was nearly impossible to fit that all in two minutes :(

Anyways, I got rejected to the school unfortunately... I'll just do better this coming year.

Or maybe even try to find a job or internship directly. Thanks again!

    Hey Alvin:

Sad to note on rejection news. But let me say, I liked your video. My amateurish review comments :)

    # The way you have attempted to tell story on you has been achieved its objective-I feel.

    # The actor you have selected did good justice to the role.

    # Funnier elements could have added more impressive salt as David Mullen commented in earlier post.

    # I liked struggling part in B/W later achievement moved to color tones. @ 1:28 mnts.

    # Liked the symbolic shot that after achievement he gets into lift which was flooded with light.

Then onwards it looked suddenly dull - probably due to outdoor shooting?

May we know how did you accomplished this -like camera chosen, shots selected etc etc,,

  5. I'm just starting to get into cinematography. I really don't have money for a perfessional camera. I just been watching movies and stuff. Any ideas on this? Thank you

    Hi Clifford,

So how it is progressing. Me too on same path - but started off with SONY A200 DSLR .. (b/w) to start off. I keep off myself from adobes and others as of now.

Learning is tough but interesting .. Dabling a bit on masters painting to understand intricacies of image building.

Please do share your exploration too.

    Thanks

  6. Hi :

Thanks for those kind genuine words. Am not sure why am being hooked "back" to this after a gap of 15 years, once was the dream to join FTII and failed miserably. Like any other "middle class" family's paradox - I started a career for surviving ..IT was the best.

Am now,at the age of early 40s, I feel like to start from scratch - probably to undertake a good course from reputed institute either from here or abroad. My search is on for best schools abroad - zeroing in Canada or US probably - not sure -as usual !

Let me "live" for the rest of the life than survive ..

    Regards

    Abhilash,

Some nice advice already given here. I am not sure about what you do in IT. However, the important thing is to do what you love most. Money, fame are by products. I realised this after working 20 years in senior positions in the corporate world. The last two positions were Head-Govt. relations of Nokia and Executive Director at Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology in India. Ofcourse, I didn't jump after waking up one fine day. I have been preparing for this. However, no amount of preparation can be enough for a smooth transition.

You should also see if you are attracted towards this because of glamour. If so, nothing can be far from the truth. In India, no common man hears about cinematographers. The actors, directors hog the limelight. All the best.
