  1. To put in a little more detail, I have been making films on my own for almost four years now. They're mostly shorts I made with friends. Some good, some not. But I do feel like I have enough to put together a decent reel.

Now, what about the resume? I've only worked random retail or warehouse jobs. I've never been on a real film set. I feel like they'll barely look at it.

    Any advice would be great

  2. I've started to incorporate lights more into my projects. Before I wouldn't even bother and just use whatever available light was there.

Before for white balance I would just use the settings like Daylight, Fluorescent, Cloudy, etc. But I'd like to start using the kelvin settings along with my lights.

For example, the lights I have are balanced for I think 6500 Kelvin according the little manual the lights came with. Does that mean I would go into my camera and set it to 6500?

  3. In most of my filmmaking experience I've always just used natural light or whatever lights happen to be nearby when on a certain location such as a lamp or whatever.

I want to screw around more with different types of lighting but I have a question. Let's say I buy a light that is strictly for filmmaking or photography and I use that in a scene. But, there is natural sun light shining in through the window.

Can I use two different types of a light in a scene? Would it affect it somehow?

  4. I want to make a photo montage of an artists work that I like but I've run into a problem before I've even begun.

I got all the photos I need that I want to cut together. Thing is, the photos are not the right size. When I play the image on FCP X, the photo is not covering the entire screen. How do I change the size of the photos?

  5. i use dslr for all of my projects, so they're all small projects without much of a crew. By bigger project, i mean having a crew, schedule, budget, etc...

When I set White Balance, I have a bunch of different presets to choose from (daylight, incandescent, cloudy, etc) and I choose accordingly.

Now, are the presets always used? Is it that simple of just choosing one of the several presets available?

I know you can set a custom white balance by taking a photo of something completely white and that'll be accurate. Is that the more accurate way of doing it?

My questions are little all over the place. Thanks for answering.

  6. Might sound like a stupid question, but let me explain.

I listened to an interview with Louis CK talking about his show Louie. He mentioned that he doesn't use a zoom lens and instead decides to take the extra time and money to have prime lenses.

So lets say you have a 25mm prime lens you want to use on a project. Whats the difference if you use a zoom lens set to 25mm? Does it have a different effect? Does a 25mm prime look different than a 25mm on a zoom?

  7. I'm not exactly s first time director, I've made quite a few short films and even this tiny feature film (wasn't very good)

But all of those were all done mostly by myself. I would beg my friends to come over for the weekend to shoot them. Some of them were good and some were not.

I plan on making a "legit" short film soon. By legit I mean having a crew of people I can collaborate with and professional actors. I plan on sending it off to festivals in the end.

So what advice could you bestow upon me? Any is appreciated.
