  1. Hi everyone, I'll be shooting some footage of city streets and highways (some of it from inside a car) at dusk. The intention is to get it as "dusky" as possible, which I think gets me to the very limit of the lense and filmstock (f2 at 320 EI for 500T stock). The reason for that is to hopefully get at that point when the light levels of sky and sodium street lamps meet, so as to not overpower each other, but provide an even light level with changes in color only. But when it gets this dark, it gets even darked in the viewfinded, especially with a 85B filter in there. So I was thinking of maybe using 250D instead. I lose a third of a stop compared to 500T with a 85B filter, correct? I doubt this is a noticable loss with modern filmstocks; I mean if I had to rate 250D stock as 320. So any other considerations here? In case I want to go deeper into the dusk, how much can I expect to get away (without pushing) with slight underexposure (about 1 stop). thank you Edgar
  2. I seem to be having the same problem with Schneider 28mm, on Arriflex 35-III. Not only is this thing so tiny but half of the lens body goes into the mount opening, so all you have in the end are two rings, aperture and focus sticking out of the camera, the rest of it disappears into the body of the camera. One other problem I had was how to close the rear opening of the matte-box around the lens, because for the matte-box I have, there are no step-down rings or rubber extensions with an opening small enough to embrace the body of the lens. And if there were, they would directly touch the aperture ring, which is another problem. So what I did in the end is made a custom "nun's knickers", which makes it easy to pull it off the lens any time I want to adjust the aperture.
  3. Hi there, Thank you very much. I guess for now I'll have to deal with it as it is, but at some point I'll get the other type of adapter. I've contacted the manufacturer of the adapter I have right now and they confirmed that on these type of lenses it causes this sort of problem. thanks Edgar
  4. Hi there, Recently I got a Schneider 28mm Xenon lens with the Arri standard mount, and a PL adapter for attaching it to my camera. But I'm very confused about something, I see Cooke Kinetal lenses have the same structure, so I'm sure someone will have the right answer, either from experience with Kinetal or Xenon lenses. Here is the issue: the lens has two rings, one for the aperture, and another for focus. The whole thing makes sense if you somehow attach it to the rear end (which is obviously not how this lens is attached). In that case turning the first ring changes the aperture while all other parts of the lens are fixed, and turning the second ring turns the cylinder body of the middle part of the lens, thus changing focus. BUT if you attach the lens where it's supposed to be attached: on the barrel with a little chanel where the screws fall into. Then you have a funny situation: the second ring can't be turned at all, because its connected to the middle cylinder and thus to the mount screws. Turning the aperture ring then changes the focus, and you can't change the aperture because you can't fix the inner part from rotating with it. And I missing something here? I know that the situation might be different when using the PL mount adapter, but I'm scratching my head thinking how on earth did they use these lenses even on cameras that have standard arri mounts, because no matter where you use it, it seems the screws have to be fixed to the middle rotating part. thanks Edgar
  5. I'm looking to find (or build) a power supply for Arriflex 35-III, which uses a 4-pin XLR connector. As far as I've been able to tell, the standard wiring for the 4-pin XLR on video cameras is PIN1: ground/zero, PIN4: 12V +; pins 2 and 3 are unconnected. Can someone confirm that the same wiring is used on 35-III series Arri cameras? I'm looking at items such as this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Energy-Efficient-XLR-4-PIN-12V-5A-Power-supply-for-JVC-SONY-PANASONIC-Pro-Video-/321678932915?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ae58efbb3 Will something like this work? I'll get a proper batter pack for it, but I want to get something like this too, when used indoors. thanks
  6. Yea. I've seen chipped shutters (from using a wrong lens) on some of the older cameras I looked at, like 2C. Could someone please leave a comment about the power supply question I asked a couple of posts ago?
  7. Hey guys, I'll use this thread to ask you something else quickly, even though it's off topic. Can I use any video power supply that has a 4-pin XLR connector (like for use with video cameras)? I assume pin wiring is the same in all of these units and compatible with movie cameras. Of course, if it supports enough amps. 35-III motor draws 2.5 A at 24FPS, so 5A will suffice except maybe for high speed work.
  8. I have the 80mm CF Zeiss for Hasselblad. I'm sure I'll make use of it, but that's going to be a very long lens for 35mm MP frame. That's pretty much the equivalent of 50mm for still 35mm. Am I right in assuming that I'd have to take a 28mm lens (for use on the motion picture camera), of any sort (be it medium format or 35mm still), to get a 50mm equivalent for still 35mm? Sorry didn't know how to phrase this more elegantly.
  9. One more question. Speaking of that m42 adapter, I see that the flange focal distance for M42 is smaller (about 45mm) than Arri PL (which is 52mm). So basically what they did with this adapter is they placed the entire lens barrel into the opening of the PL mount and moved it back into the body of the camera by a couple of mm so that the lens moves closer to the film plan, otherwise it would have been impossible to focus to infinity. Am I correct in saying this?
  10. Since there is so much uncertainty with this, I'd appreciate if someone could tell me exact combinations of lenses and adapters they've used. Something in the middle range around 28mm
  11. Hi, thanks for the explanation... here is a PL to M42 mount I found on ebay also: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adapter-ARRI-Arriflex-PL-Mount-F3-RED-Alexa-C500-Scarlet-M42-Screw-Lens-/371275158200?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5671b952b8 It says in the description that only some M42 lenses work with it. I have an old Practica SLR, which uses M42 mount, so maybe that's another cheap option. The trouble with using my CF lenses is that I don't have a very wide lens, and on 35mm MP, the zoom factor will be huge compared to 6x6 MF, I suspect. So I'd have to probably buy another CF lens for wider work, and those are often nearly as expensive as some older cine lenses.
  12. I have Hasselblad CF mount lenses, will the work? And why won't Canon or Nikon lenses work? I mean with a proper adapter.
  13. Greetings. I just bought an Arri 35III, with a PL mount, but lenses these days are often more expensive than cameras themselves, so I'm thinking of using still lenses for starters. Let me just say that I am aware that a still lens is no replacement for a real cine lens. I know about some of the problems I can expect, but I'd like to hear some opinions about image quality. If I were to use a Canon or Nikon zoom lens, with a PL adapter, can I expect a decent image quality, and frame coverage? I know these lenses are designed to cover a larger frame, so I should be OK right? Any other warnings or advice would be appreciated. thanks Edgar
  14. Hi, I'm looking for a 400' mag for a Arri 35 2C, and I just had a thought: is a 435 400' mag by any chance compatible with older Arriflexes like 35-iii and 35-ii? Thanks
