I was thinking to try to see if I can get public school to shoot over the weekend. Almost all NYC P.S are old and could be made to look like prison cell... . a real prison cell would be awesome but I doubt I can get that. any thoughts suggestions would be appreciated...

i would say buying dvx100a would be the better way to go, i've seen it as low as 2099 usd online, and you can get one with a kit on ebay for cheap as well. then when you shoot your short you just rent any sound and lighting equipment you need on a day to day basis.
jay
Im leaning on buying GS400 now (1200) from b&h ..still considering other options
by the way .... i would not recommend you buying from any of the online stores
that has it so cheap.. read the review of each store @ http://www.resellerratings.com/
www.ExpressCameras.com
www.BestPriceCameras.com
www.USAPhotoNation.com
<--- all of these are scammers .. only trust newegg.com | b&h and others that have good reviews

By reading some of your other posts I can tell you want to shoot a feature movie. So in that case I would have to almost force you to buy a Canon GL1. Though it is 1/4 inch ccds it is alot cheaper used than a DVX,XL1,etc.... And it has the Movie mode for the film look something the Sonys do not have. You should be able to get one under $1000 used and is a much better camera than the cheap Panasonics. Invest in a boom mic and lights too.
Mainly I wanted to get a mini DV to shoot audition and personal stuff. Now for the short film project I plan to use DVX100A shooting in 24p mode.
I looked at the review about GS250 and they all say good things about this camera -- newegg.com has it for $748
When I rent DVX100A it will easily cost me over 1K even if i get one day rental change for the weekend (3 days) kinda deal.
This camera is on sale at b&h for 2899 (aftet $500 rebate) without any kit -- just the camera.
So the question is ----- I will spend $2K (1K+ for renting of DVX100A + GS250 (800(including tax) ---- would it be wiser to spend extra $1K and
buy new DVX100A instead of buying GS250 and renting DVX100A for the project?
I looked at GL1 on ebay and they all go for around $1500 .. I would be cheaper to buy GS250 and rent DVX100A than buy GL1.
Please advice.
Thanks to all for reading and responding to my post.
Thanks,
RJ

in my honest opinion, its hard to get a good 3 CCD camera for that price. Try to see if you can get a used XL1 or a PD150. You'd probably be lucky if you can find them for that kind of a price.
Thanks guys for your suggestions.

I'm looking to buy a 3 CCD DV camera around $1000
I saw Panasonic PV-GS250 $780 @ B&H
Any recommendations?
Thanks,

I would like to thank everyone for their advice.
A few important points were made for a student film makers:
- Shoot in a format that you can afford --- choose DV instead 16mm since the project should be about learning
- Objective is to finish the project because that would be one of the good selling point for your film career or making of a good director
- Keep things simple -- tell the story and do not concentrate on flashy effects
I'm thinking of using DVX100A or XL-2 .. I know it's a personal choice between these two cameras but please feel free to share your
personal experience . I'm thinking of shooting a few scenes in black and white ..should I shoot them in camera or do this in post-production
(Final cut/Adobe)?
Also, does AJ-SDX900 would be a better choice? (almost double the rental price compared to DVX) Does it offer anything different.
by the way.. this website has a lot of information about 24p format -- www.adamwilt.com/24p
Thanks,
RJ

hi,
I'm planning to shoot a short film (10-12 min) and I not sure which format I should choose.
I will be submitting to festivals and not intended for a film projection.
Basically I have to chose between --
16m -- great student package price but may cost more in processing and converting to DV for editing?
Super 16m -- should not choose since I don't plan to blow up to 35mm ?
DV -- ?
Low end 24P -- ?
24P (HD) - ideal choice -- Panasonic AJ-HDC27F VariCam for $850 a day
Sony F900 Cine Alta for $1000 a day
If I were to go with 24P is the extra $150 worth it for SONY?
What options do I have for editing if shot on 24P?
Over all pricewise does 24P(HD) cheaper than 16mm?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm currently in pre-production for a short film - closed'N (8-10min).
The screenplay is completed. I have a few actors in mind but auditions will be
held once the crew is completed.
I'm currently looking for a DP who has experience shooting in 16mm/S16mm.
I can only afford to pay $200 a day to a DP for three days of shoot (possibly Fri/Sat/Sun)
I feel that experience and innovation at DP's position is vital to any production.
I also, need gaffer/grip/sound but I will try to get friends with some experience to do that.
The production details:
Working title: closed in
Format: 16mm color
Length: 8-10min
Location: In-around NYC (Mainly in NYC - depending on location availability)
If you need more information please PM me on this site
or email me at photonet01@yahoo.com
I can also email you the screenplay in case you want to read before
considering the project.

RJ

Thanks, but I used NeroVision for the job. When I asked the original question I didn't realise that a DVD plugin was needed in order to convert AVIs and stuff.
Thanks anyway
There is a freeware software -- DVDShrink -- http://www.dvdshrink.org/
This software allows you to shrink/fit to 4.7GB single layerd dvd
Since the .avi size is 5GB you will not be shrinking as much and so the
quality should not be much off from the original
Look at the % in the software tab where it will tell you
what % it will shrink to.. if you get close to 95% you should be ok
This software is used for DVD movies that are over 4.7GB in size due to extra
stuff on the DVD and allows one to compress to one DVD
Unless you have High definition TV you will not see much difference
Hope this helps.

Hi
I'm a film student at NYU. I have made a few short films but never with the whole nine yards.
I would like to make 8-10 minutes short film with sync sound to submit in film festivals.
I have a few questions:
Roughly how much would be the cost difference between 16mm and Super16mm?
What are the main advantages with Super 16mm.. is the extra money worth it for my project?
What would be the shooting ratio I should shoot for -- 3 to 1 .......4 to 1?
Is there such thing as royalty free music for the film? If not, is it expensive to have someone
do the sound track for the film? If there was no sound track would that work... just the ambience/dialogues?
Thanks in advance,
RJ

Hi,
This post is very useful ....
Not to drift away from the subject... but I have a few questions...
is it director's responsibility to know exactly
what angles should be covered for smoother post-production (editing)?
Or that director tells what kinds emotion the scene should have and he
just concentrates on the actors on their acting ?
The DP would tell the director how to shoot the scene -- how to cover the scene (angle/dolly/pan/..etc.)?

RJ
