  1. I heard that there'll be more news on the website mid-summer, so maybe around the middle of July/August. Last I heard they're shooting for a shipping date sometime in the fall, so probably October, November.

The Altasens chip they're planning to use isn't even shipping yet commercially.

I did hear something about beta units in late summer though. Sounded interesting to me.

Thanks Jason. I'll be anxiously awaiting further news.

  2. 1) "SOLD OUT -- NO MORE TCS MOTORS MADE"

No more? Anywhere else to get a sync conversion for these guys?

    2) I'm surprised no one has put together a K3 blimp for sale online. Something with a zipper or velcro for easy loading.

    3) Some clever programmer should record the K3 sound and make an NLE/DAW audio filter that specifically removes it's particular noise. A K3 "SoundSoap" basically.

  3. ...barring some fairly major technological advances, there's stuff-all they can do about the dynamic range.

Is that really true? I mean, is there some technical reason why video will never have the dynamic range of film?

  4. RAID: YES!!!!

RAID creates multiple backup copies as it runs, allowing for redundant copies of anything sent to a hard drive. So, if your main fails, you have a perfect copy for backup.

Well, That depends on the RAID type. Fastest RAID (Striping) has no redundancy. I believe RAID 5 does speed and redundancy, but not as fast as Striping.

  5. Hi,

Apparently to get the data out of the mags, they operate as a serial ATA master, which means you can plug a hundred-quid hard drive into it and have it spool off the images.

Oh that's nice. Definitely simplifies things.

  6. You wouldn't bother with a Kona card if you just wanted it in FCP - you'd dump it onto hard drives and then downres it to offline.

    Phil

I guess I'm missing something. How would you "dump it onto hard drives" uncompressed w/o using Dual Link HD-SDI? How else could one transfer the data from the mag to a CPU drive?

  7. There's just no way things will be ready.  Even if the camera were there (big if), what are you going to edit with.  How will you even view the material?  How will you store all that vast data?

That's an interesting question. I'm guessing that maybe the magazine holds about 300-400GB of data. When a mag is full you would obviously want to 1) copy all it's contents to a locked drive (s,) and 2) import offline HD footage into an NLE for viewing/editing. The new Kona 2 card supports Dual Link HD-SDI, but I wonder if the Kinetta format would be properly "seen" by Kona/FCP. Of course this all would require a mag to meet an NLE before it could be deleted/"reloaded."

  8. Shoot tests and take notes to learn the idiosycrasies of your camera's metering system. As for exposing snow, again, tests would be a good idea, otherwise try and meter off of something more neutral in brightness than white snow. If not, try a grey card. Or calibrate your camera to a separate light meter by testing and then use the light meter.

I'm having flashbacks of a USC S-8 class where I was stuck with a cam w/ a broken internal light meter, and cinemeter that didn't do 18fps. The good news is that I learned a lot shooting test and getting a decent organic feel for exposure. Just prepare as much as you can, and you'll be fine.

  9. It would be a good idea to start writing all your ideas down, trying to develop it as much as you can before you hand it off to somebody else. It wouldn't have to be at all formal at this point. Also, a tip that was passed on to me, discipline yourself to always keep some kind of notebook with you at all times to jot down story ideas. Inspiration, for most people, is a totally unpredictable animal.

Bottom line; while you're finding a writer, try to get at least a broad outline of what you're looking for, especially the details that make it particularly interesting to you personally.

    Best,

  10. Wow. I had to register here just to say how amazing I think that camera is. Genius. If I had a lot of extra cash to buy one (I don't,) I'd probably spend all my waking hours collecting footage with it, bringing it back to Final Cut Pro for offline edits.

This is very good news. I wish Jeff Kreines the very best of luck with this project, and it's future.

    Best,
