  1. Hi: I am a student filmmaker specializing in directing. For my short films so far, I prepared the shot list and storyboards and then handed over to the cinematographer. He goes through that and based on his comments, I revised those again. For the feature films, does the director prepare the shot list/storyboards separately and shares it with the cinematographer or is this a team work, they sit together and prepare? Also, what I do was, first I draw the floor plan in 2D. Then, I assign the camera set ups (based on my pre-vis on blocking), prepares the shot list and finally I draw the story boards. Most of my friends do it the other way. First, they draw the storyboards and then prepares the shot list. Is there a right approach to this or can it be done either way? Thanks.
  2. Hey Guys, I was contacted several days ago to DP a short feature and was sent the script; however, I had a few questions: Is it bad industry practice to suggest changes in the script? After reading through it several times, I believe that some changes in dialogue etc. would really improve the overall story, but I'm hesitant to suggest changes to the director. Also, could you walk me through your personal processes as cinematographer when evaluating scripts (subtext, emotional analysis etc.) before production. Thanks, Sam
  3. I am a DP based in NYC getting ready to shoot my third indie feature. I'm curious to hear what other DP's do to prep for feature projects, and also what do you ultimately bring to set with you for principal photography? I've been working on ultra low budget indie films and would love to hear some other perspectives. I understand the importance of prep time (creative meetings with the director, tech scouts), but also know production doesn't always go as planned (due to weather and other unforeseeable circumstances) and time is limited during production so being able to adapt on the run is important rather than trying religiously to stick to a lighting plan. This is a broad subject but I'd love to hear: what do you do to prep, and what do you bring to set with you during principal photography? Thanks!
