Sue Smith
straight 8 is delighted to announce the competition jury will include three-time BAFTA winner director, writer and producer Asif Kapadia (Senna, Amy), double Oscar® nominated cinematographer Ed Lachman (Carol, Far From Heaven), Channel 4’s Random Acts commissioning editor, Pegah Farahmand, Altitude Film Distribution’s Head of Distribution Hamish Moseley, and chairing the jury, film critic and author, Jason Solomons. Prizes for selected straight 8 competition winners includes: • Screening at Cannes Film Festival, May 2016 • 3 straight 8 films will be selected for Channel 4’s Random Acts strand • 5 rolls of Kodak Super 8mm film or 1 roll of Kodak 16mm film • Processing and scanning of above courtesy of Cinelab London • Automatic free entry to straight 8’s next annual competition. The deadline to enter the competition is midnight PST, Monday 29 February. The deadline for the finished film delivery to London is Monday 4 April, 7pm GMT. Filmmakers can only enter straight 8 at straight8.net/enter in order for straight 8 to send them the super 8 cartridge they must film on. The first time selected filmmakers will see their films at all is when they are screened at a packed industry premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, May 2016. Finished films need to be submitted back to straight 8, exposed but undeveloped by 4 April. Super 8 film does not record sound. Soundtracks must be original and are uploaded separately. The maximum length of each film is restricted by the cartridge length to 3min 20secs. straight 8 tries to give as many films as possible cinema premieres and there will be further screenings later in the year in London and beyond. Ed Sayers, founder of straight 8 and a filmmaker says, “The level playing field that straight 8’s rules create attracts many filmmakers from rookies to seasoned pro’s - many have fed their straight 8 experiences into much bigger projects. We are that delighted to have Kodak, Cinelab London, Altitude Film Distribution and elevenfiftyfive on board supporting our 2016 competition. We already have people entering from all over the world. Each time someone enters we can only imagine the stories, locations and flavours that will wing their way back to us, magically, inside those little black boxes that we’re sending everywhere!” Previous well-known participants have included Edgar Wright, Slavek Hörak, Alice Lowe, Steve Oram, Rich Fulcher and Julia Davies.
