Lenses for Eggers' "Nosferatu"

I have heard that this film used lenses developed so that it would look B&W yet let certain colors through, like red. Does anyone knw exactly what was used and or how this effect was achieved? I ahev only seen the trailer but it looks very well shot and lit.
