looking to buy a lighting kit

Recommended Posts

Dear Group,

I am looking to buy a lighting kit for use with mainly video.

In the past I have used Lowell DP lights, work lights, and a variety of other inexpensive lights I have picked up.

I would know like to spend about $1000 to buy a kit that will give me some flexibility.

What kit would you recommend?

Thank you

My personal kit is a small Kino Flo and Dedolight with various clamps and stands for mounting. If I could do it over again for the same money ($1500ish), I'd probably start out with a used 1200w magnetic ballast HMI and learn to light properly using bounce boards. Although, that light would be worthless for interviews, so it's hard to say. I think it all depends on what you're trying to light. Small lights won't help much for lighting in the daytime.

an arri kit would help (1k, 650 and a 300w). Atleast you can use that for interviews, shooting stills (portraiture), and anything else that doesn't require huge setups, and imitating daylight.

Use that and get a rental fee per day you bring it on board. You should be able to save up enough for bigger or more specialized lights from there on.
