Tiffen UV Filter

I've recently been putting a Tiffen 82mm UV filter on our Fujinon zoom and have noticed that in certain conditions it adds some circular darkening on the image. Is this normal? Is there a way to avoid this? I want to keep some sort of protective glass on the lens, but this isn't acceptable.

Any ideas?

I assume the problem occurs at the wide end of the zoom. If that's the case, one possible solution would be a thinner, wide-angle UV filter, such as one made by Hoya. If that doesn't do it, then perhaps a clamp-on lens shade with a 4x4 filter holder would work.
