XL2 purchasing question

Im looking to spend around 3,550 on an XL2 w/stock lens, I know a lot of people streess to buy from B&H photo but I would figure there would be some other places that could sell it for a little cheaper. I was looking at either of these few sites. I guess some feedback on their reputation would be nice. I have done some research on Reseller ratings about the companines and they have a descent rating. Anyway here are the links. Thanks -M

I know both of these probably do have some kind of bait and switch deal goin down, but I dunno how hard they encourage you to make extra purchases... If there are anyother places besides Ebay please let me know. Much appreciated.

Yeah, both of these places get pretty good reseller.com ratings and they might indeed, give you some pressure to buy other stuff - their own brand crappy filters, etc. - but does that bother you? If you aren't strong-willed, then don't use them. B&H is my one-stop shopping center.

I had exceptional luck buying my XL2 from Craig's List - http://www.craigslist.org/ (but you need to find your own nearest location). I got the XL2 with 10 hours on it, additional 3-year MAC warranty, custom PortaBrace case, JVC deck, and a bunch of other stuff for $3,900 delivered to my door by the seller.

It took me about a month of searching Craig's List, but it was worth every minute. You might also search some of the film/dv sites classifieds for members selling their stuff. Here are a few - there are many more:

Hi "XSABERX": Um, both "Abe's of Maine" and "Nice Electronics" have _terrible_ ratings on Reseller Ratings:

http://www.resellerratings.com

Abe's is rated 5.4 and Nice is 5.5, compared to B&H's rating of 9.23.

In general, if a dealer is rated below about 8.5 on Reseller Ratings, proceed with extreme caution!

Although good deals can be found randomly almost anywhere (on ebay, craigslist, 3 blocks from where you live, whatever), in general: "If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is."

Typically, dealers selling at low, low prices will screw you one way or another, and sometimes screw you more than one way! For example, they may not ship you a camera at all (but take/hold your money), or ship you an incomplete system (no factory-standard user manual, accessories, warranty, bundled software, and so forth), or ship gray-market goods, or ship used/demo goods as "new", and on and on.

Sure, you can get lucky and find a honest dealer by chance; if so, great. But it's your hard-earned cash. It gets down to your tolerance for risk and hassle.

The better dealers (like B&H and Armatos in NYC, and a few others) got to where they are by being consistently more honest and dependable compared to the vast majority of dealers. And although honest dealers occasionally screw up, they can be depended on to make good on a transaction.

Best of luck with your "new" camcorder purchase!

P.S.: The cam manufacturers often offer substantial rebates on their camcorders; these rebates may only be available for cams purchased from a factory-authorized dealer.

Yeah, Jeez, be careful, people.

I got my XL1s at buydig.com back in '02. So, they're cool (well, they sold me a warranty I've never used, but I guess that was my dumb ass for buying it. It's still a legit warranty for 4 year service at Mack camera). Unless they've gone downhill since then, they should be okay.

But, can't go wrong with B&H. Or ZGC. I used to buy a lot of crap from them.

Oh yeah, does anyone know of REPUTABLE places (aside from B&H, ZGC) that sell the body-only kit for less than $2900, or are we not there yet? Not everyone who sells the XL2 sells the body-only.
