Getting the anamorphic looks??

Lets say I want the anamorphic looks of 1.85, 2:35.1 or 16:9 widescreen. I know that I can change the ratios in most Editing systems after the footage has been shot.

 

But...How do I compose these shots without putting tape over the monitor im using?

 

Is there a way to change the aspect ratio on the the viewfinder or monitor? or do I need to purchase an anamorphic lens?

 

I am asking this question in respect of the JVC HD100 and the Canon XL2

 

I know this is a pure amature question but thats what this forums for hey..
