Abel Klainbaum
I'm just doing research on these... The A1 is a fancified HC1. Of course it gives you more options, the main difference being that it allows for timecode, XLR inputs, and a couple other details. Also twice the price. I found a sony comparisons site where you can check out the specs btwn the A1 and the Z1 and HC1. http://www.sonyhdvinfo.com/article.php?fil...-HC1-and-HVR-A1 Abel

Sam Wells
A friend bought one recently, although I tried it I haven't shot anything yet. He's doing very interesting lyrical/experimental work with it. It's very smooth as long as you don't get into highlight issues (I think no knee control etc) or lower light levels where it's certainly less sensitive/noisier than it's big brother Z-1. It does make me think - scientifically justified or not - there is a "CMOS Look" - and I like it; the problem here is the camera - being at the low end is compromised. I can't help but wonder what the RAW output of this thing would give you - what you'd get before the signal is tortured by HDV :) Otherwise I don't know what to say - you're not going to get an F900 for $ 2000.... for what it is, it's interesting, it's "Version 1" of ultra compact HD, if you're willing to be an early adopter / pioneer and that's appropriate to what you're doing it might be worth considering -- but the Z-1 would be a "safer" choice It's the Super 8 of HD - is that an asset or a limitation, you have to decide. (I'm not getting into Z-1 vs Panasonic vs Canon, others can do that.. ) -Sam
Guest JSpaceman
I've got this one and I've been quite satisfied with it. Stabilisation is required, however. Shotting hand held is very nice with a Manfrotto Fig Rig. I find the compactness a definite plus, since I shoot quit a lot on the road and even abroad. ERUDITORUM
I hold one, and I am quite satisfied with it considering value for money. I will recomend this camera for someone who doesn't want to jump to HDV spending a lot of money, and if you are a 'pro' as a second camera in an HDV working flow. If you want an interesting review of the camera take a look to this link http://www.videoguys.com/blog/index.php?p=
Michael J. Murphy
Hi! Here's a link to a description of a production that used 3 A1U cameras mounted on a jib. They were taken to Madagascar to film for an American zoo. http://bssc.sel.sony.com/BroadcastandBusin...ers/index.shtml
