Gary Lemson
I was viewing "The Making of Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl" and noticed a numeric digital display flashing on the back of a Panavision camera matte box. I couldn't quite get fix on the specific numbers to see what they meant. Anyone know what the display is used for?
Mike Panczenko
It was probably a Panatape. It measures the distance from the subject by sending out ultrasonic waves, providing an active readout of distances for the 1st. Another one that operates on similar principles is the Cinetape. The biggest complaint about these tools is that they are easily confused, and thus sometimes require an extra step of interpretation to figure out what they are measuring the distance to.
