John Stanhope
hey guys, I'm going to be converting a super8 camera into max8, but i cant seem to find a pre fabricated gate that i can buy, Has anyone seen anything around, If not I'm sure i can do it myself its not really that difficult, I think that Max8 will make everything easier, due to the 20% increase in the gate from 1.33 to 1.58 it wont need as much cropping for widescreen. thanks, John D. Premium Member Michael Lehnert Posted January 24, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted January 24, 2008 Ultra 8 or Super Duper 8 is 1:1.45 max as recently extensively debated here (and quie inconflict to Pro8mm), and the increase is more like 10-%. It's not like Normal 35 to Super 35, Normal 16 to Super 16, or even Normal 8 to Super 8! Pro8mm's claim of 1:1.58 is based on letterbox-cropped telecine. I recommend reading through these three things here first, complete, in this order: http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...?showtopic=2005 http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...showtopic=26352 and most recently a post of mine on the nature of Max 8: http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...st&p=214201
John Stanhope
Thanks for the info. it was really helpful, i still think im gonna do the conversion, i Have more regular gates just in case one breaks or something while im working on it, i guess i have to deal with a little inaccuracy in the viewfinder unless i can buy a pre made ground glass, though. File the left-hand side about as far as you think you can go. Be careful. Mitch Perkins at www.photoplays.ca has done many and may offer some advice if you need it.
