S16 to be telecined only

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I know that the S16 negative area is larger than regular 16 thus it´s much better when you intend to get it transfered to 35mm for projection.

However, does it make any difference to shoot S16 or regular 16 if your goal is to have it telecined and finished on video?

Will that small negative area added by the S16 format make the difference on the video material after the telecine?

Thanks.

It makes no difference if you are transferring to 4x3 full-frame video, since you'd just be cropping the 1.68 : 1 Super-16 frame to the 1.33 : 1 Regular 16mm area anyway.

For 16x9 standard def video transfers, 4x3 letterboxed transfers, and HD transfers, the wider negative of Super-16 helps a little in reducing graininess and improving sharpness. Every little bit helps! However, it may not be a radical enough improvement for you.
