Guy Meachin
Is it possible to use Mp3's in FCP? I've tried importing them and in playback they stutter. Are Mp3's not of sufficient quality to use for editing?
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted October 17, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted October 17, 2004 Hi, A really carefully encoded 320kbps MP3 is probably good enough to use for professional work, but I still wouldn't. However, they shouldn't stutter. Phil
Guy Meachin
Thanks Phil - you are an invaluable source of info! God knows why it's stuttering. The mp3 is only 128kbps from itunes, maybe that's why. Not to worry!
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted October 17, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted October 17, 2004 Hi, It still shouldn't stutter, it'll just sound a bit mushy in the high frequencies. Phil
Alvin Pingol
Maybe the MP3 decoder in FCP is badly programmed. A lot of MP3's today are encoded by quick, built in encoders that will sometimes output bad chunks of data here and there, which causes fuss in some decoders that expect a perfect stream. Every time I need to use an MP3 in a project, I convert it to WAV using an application specifically designed for the encoding/decoding of MP3 files (and is therefore quite good at it). This way, the NLE can't complain.
Guy Meachin
I imported the mp3 into Toast and exported it as an aif file. Works fine now in FCP. :)
Jon Allen
I always convert mp3s to wavs, this way I don't have to render the audio whenever a small change is made. mp3 is good enough for most commercial projects, but remember, fcp (unless you tell it to) won't work natively with mp3 format sound.
