If you want a great crash course into the use and functionality of the Varicam then they are well worth it, especially if you come from a film or DV background and need a primer into the pro video field. Having had enough experience with pro video otherwise, I was fine with spending the day at a rental house going through the Varicam mostly on my own with the occassional help of a technician. Bob Goodman will soon have a Goodman's Guide for the Varicam similar to the excellent Guide he wrote for the SDX900. If you are comfortable with pro video then perhaps this book would be all you need to prepare for the Varicam.

I met some of the instructors of the Varicamp, and they are very knowledgeable people and they are great teachers. I would assume if you want to learn about the Varicam then the money is definitely worth it.
