Hello all,

Whats the best way to give Tri-X black & white film a dirty grainy look?

I'm shooting traffic & city areas & want to give it that yucky busy inner city look. Will be shot both morning(between 7-9am) & late afternoon (about 5pm) when the traffic is busiest.

I've heard push processing & using a red filter can do this. Any advice would be great...

Push processing will definitely give you a significant increase in grain. Not sure about that red filter, though it'll surely give you some interesting effects (those who wear red lipstick will have white lips, etc). It will cut down a lot of light, too.

Generally, low contrast shots with a lot of gradient tones will appear to be the graniest, so perhaps you can take advantage of that some way.

You can always underexpose, a little, to increase the grain. You can also "push" the stock 2 stops for a dirty look. But since you're shooting S8 I don't think you want to try to increase the grain...it's a grain heavy medium as is. Btw, red filter in b&w is a contrast controlling filter, as most filters are for b&w stock.

Good luck.
