Tentpole directors see Imax in future

'Dark Knight' starts growing trend in Hollywood

Directors have a new perk to demand of studios when it comes to tentpole pics: sequences shot using Imax cameras. The six Imax sequences that Christopher Nolan directed and integrated into "The Dark Knight" have encouraged other filmmakers to get studios to pony up the production dollars for similar shots.

Michael Bay will film at least three action setpieces using Imax cameras for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," which is lensing.

Somewhat off topic, but I hope The Dark Knight inspires more practical stunts too- the shot with the semi flipping over was incredible, yet tastefully understated, which is something you don't often see when directors get carried away with CGI. Also, pyro is a lot more fun than roto :)

Shooting in IMAX is no guarantee of future proofing. First of all you have to shoot in IMAX HD which is 48 frames per second for those fast action shots. Then it has to be also OmniMAX so it can be projected on the IMAX tilted dome for the total immersive experience which means that you are inside the picture and of course it has to be IMAX 3-D for that added depth perception.

then and only then are you totally future proofed.
