Andrew Greenan
Hi, on the SR2 i'm looking to use, the shutter angle is 172.8 deg. For a strobe effect like in Three Kings or Saving Private Ryan, would it just be the I]shutter[/i] that's adjusted? And how far down would it have to be closed? Presumably there is little difference in formats here, i.e. 16mm and 35mm; besides different camera makes. i heard that frames were removed in post on Three Kings, to amplify this. andrew
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted February 16, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted February 16, 2004 16mm or 35mm doesn't make a difference -- those films used a 45 degree shutter angle for the most extreme effect (plus lots of jumpy movement and stuff flying through the air to show the effect off.) You don't really need to drop frames -- in a sense, closing down the shutter is similar in that you have the motion being sampled for shorter lengths of time, leaving longer gaps where the motion is occurring between frames.
